1 Overview
The active antenna unit (AAU) is a new type of RF module following the RFU and RRU. It
incorporates the functions of RRUs and conventional antennas and requires less site
resources.
The AAU5645 is one of Huawei's main products that implement massive MIMO in NR
networks. The following figure shows the position of the AAU5645 in NR network.
The AAU5645 supports 64T64R. Through sharp increase of transmit and receive antenna
channels, this product provides greater diversity, array, spatial multiplexing, and interference
suppression gains. This helps operators to maximize the use of existing site and spectrum
resources, enhance the system performance, and improve wireless network capacity.
2 Product Characteristics
Leading Performance
Multiple channels
The AAU5645 uses the massive MIMO technology and supports 64T64R. Massive
MIMO features the adoption of massive antenna arrays for joint signal reception and
demodulation or transmission, and therefore significantly enhances single-user link
performance and multi-user spatial multiplexing capability, and improves system link
quality and transmission rates when compared with traditional multiple-antenna
technologies. Massive MIMO also enables the system to flexibly adjust beam forms in
both the horizontal and vertical planes, significantly enhancing 3D coverage capability.
Large bandwidth
The AAU5645 supports a large bandwidth of OBW 200 MHz and C-band deployment.
The AAU5645 can work in the C-band. The C-band is a mainstream frequency band and
has abundant spectrum resources. The AAU5645 has a bandwidth capability of 200 MHz
and supports diverse operators' C-Band spectrum resources. Only one such module can
be used to complete the C-band deployment, saving site space and reducing network
construction costs.
High power
The AAU5645 adopts the industry-leading power amplification technology,
Huawei-developed IF and RF chip, and unique antenna element technology. The module
features high power, large bandwidth, and small size. The advanced power amplification
technology achieves a maximum of 280 W power and supports a wider coverage area.
High Integration
Light weight and small size
The AAU5645 integrates the functions of antennas and RF modules with a total weight
of 34 kg and a small size (795 mm x 470 mm x 160 mm). Its weight and dimensions are
far less than those of the traditional RRU+antenna solution.
Small frontal area
The frontal area (795 mm x 470 mm) of the AAU5645 is smaller than that of a common
antenna.
Flexible deployment
The integrated design of the AAU5645 saves the installation space required by the RRU,
jumper, and external combiner. This simplifies the antenna installation platform and
enables flexible deployment. Its support for 3D beamforming and tilt adjustment reduces
requirements on the antenna height and facilitates installation.
