REFERENCE – TANIT AND RA

DAWN OF MAN: Tanit and Ra are both incomprehensible alien intellects which came to Earth
(or perhaps arose on Earth) in a prehistoric era. Some legends speak of them as brother and sister,
suggesting the possibility that they are both exemplars of a single species (or perhaps a single entity
turned against itself). But it’s more likely that they are utterly unlike in nature except for their
shared point of commonality in humanity.
• Before the origin of the conscious mind, humans were simply very smart apes. In
anatomically modern humans, tool use and even agriculture were more advanced than
among other animals, but they did not possess true intellect.
• The Herds: This made them ideal hosts for Tanit and Ra, both of whom infested the
minds of man like viruses and turned them into extrusions of their will. The resulting herds
created the first civilizations, although they still did not exist as individuals – they were
merely tools wielded by Tanit or Ra; a physical host for a vast hive consciousness.
• The First Humans: The First Humans came to exist when Tanit attempted to infect the
herd of Ra (and vice versa). Human consciousness was born from the friction between
them. The bicameral mind is, in fact, a manifestation of this conflict between Tanit and Ra
– and in its asymmetry, human consciousness is given form in the discontinuity between
the mind’s two halves.
o The Rebellion: The First Humans rebelled against the herds. In Egypt, there is
some evidence that the ensuing rebellion may have even fractured the Ra
consciousness (into Amun-Ra and Aten-Ra). Tanit endured in her last refuge of
Carthage until the Punic Wars razed the city.
• Fundamental Metaphysic: To be clear, it is not the case that there is a human identity
which is plagued by Tanit and Ra. Rather, all human identity is nothing more than a byproduct
of the conflict between vast alien intelligences. The lateralization of brain function in each
individual is merely the wavering frontlines of an ancient war. Your entire sense of self and
all of your conscious thought is nothing more than a metaphysical fever boiling out of the
trench warfare being fought in the sulcus of the cerebral cortex.
o Note: Ra is primarily active in the left hemisphere of the brain. Tanit in the right.

TANIT: In a fully realized host (i.e., one in which the taint of Ra is not present), the parasite which
is Tanit manifests as an eye in the palm of the left hand.
• The Fasciculus: Tanit forms a cluster of nerve tissue within the hand, suborning the
Ulnar nerve and altering the structure of Guyon’s canal. This cluster is the actual seat of
the Tanit consciousness, with this “mind” or “eye” of Tanit remotely controlling the
primary brain of the host. It is capable of operating the hand as an independent entity in the
case of death (a “hand of Tanit”); and in some cases may even lend a semblance of motion
to an otherwise brain dead host (as long as the brain stem is intact), creating a shambling,
zombie-like thing.
• Infection: Tanit is a parasite — microscopic and slightly purplish in color. When a host is
infected by Tanit, the parasites cluster in the left hand, where they join together (in
accordance to a biology utterly foreign to terrestial life) to form more complex structures.
o Child Sacrifice: Tanit uses rituals of child sacrifice to create tophet serums of
viral payload capable of overriding (or destroying) Ra’s presence in the host. This
effectively kills the human “personality”, and creates a fully realized Tanit host.

Left Hand of Mythos

5
• Face of Baal: Tanit is also referred to as the Face of Baal (a word meaning “Lord” or
“master” in primal Semitic tongues). This suggests that perhaps the Tanit hive
consciousness is nothing more than a representative or tool of some greater and even more
inexplicable entity.

RA: Ra transmits itself to new hosts as a primarily memetic virus — it is written that Ra created
man by “speaking their secret names” (proper verbal coding can actually alter the Broca area of the
brain, effectively infecting the host; fortunately, the memetic payload must be customized to each
victim). Direct transmission via liquid, however, is also possible — in another Egyptian tale, Ra
weeps and from his tears man is given birth. In the Book of the Dead, Ra cuts himself and his blood
transforms into the personifications of Hu and Sia.
• Hu/Sia: When fully realized, Ra’s hosts manifest in two forms — the Hu (authority)
become central coordinators while the bulk of the host is made up of Sia (mind). (Hu is the
deification of the first word, the word of creation, and was “companion to the pharaohs”.)
o Hu-manifestations are at least somewhat resistant to the Tanit parasite. Those with
a Hu-strain of Ra may experience this as an enlightened/mystical state. But the
more a Hu-infected host opens itself to Ra, the more its own personality is
destroyed.
o Note: There could be fourteen different manifestations of Ra (in the “train of Ra”). In some
translations of the Book of the Dead, Chapter XVII begins: "I am Tem in rising. I am the
only One. I came into being in Nu. I am Ra who rose in the beginning... The pillars of Shu
were not as yet created. It is Ra, the creator of the names of his limbs, which came into being
in the form of the gods, who are in the train of Ra" (i.e., the gods who personify his phases)
“– fourteen Spirits, seven dark and seven light...”
• Apep Serpents: Hu-infected hosts can be particularly long-lived, with their bodies
undergoing severe transformation which eventually leaves them in a form similar to a huge,
misshapen, white wyrm.
o Apeptosis: Apep serpents can sometimes undergo a bizarre fission, rapidly
undergoing a clonal fragmentation in which their mass collapses in a multitude of
small serpents — almost maggot-like in character, but incredibly fast. These small
serpents can enter potential hosts through eyes, ears, or other orifices and rapidly
infect them with Ra.
o Replication Errors: Apeps are dangerous to Ra, however, because they can
diverge from the parent-state and become independent entities. In a fully-realized
Ra society, therefore, Apeps are often killed before this happens. In the modern
world, Apeps are particularly dangerous because there is no guarantee that their
apeptotic fission will maintain a state of equilibrium with Tanit (which could result
in anyone being infected by them having their humanity destroyed).
• Eye of Ra: Eyes of Ra were extensions of Ra’s will. They included Hathor, Sekhmet, Bast,
Wadjet, and Mut.

SISTERHOOD OF FATIMA: A coven of witches who have passed the secrets of Tanit and Ra
down through the ages.
• The Virgin Mary, Miriam (sister to Moses), and Fatima (daughter of Muhammad) were all
members.
• The Sisters of Fatima work particularly to prevent outbreaks of the Tanit parasite.

Left Hand of Mythos

6
• The inner mystery of the Sisters of Fatima is that they are all Hu-manifestations of Ra.
Their mystic rites are the result of opening themselves to Ra, and their interest in crushing
Tanit is not entirely wholesome for mankind.

THE HANDS:
• Hamsa: Also referred to as the Hand of Fatima and the Hand of Miriam, the Hamsa is a
protective sigil or charm taking the figure of a hand with an eye in the center of its palm. It
is supposed to guard against the “evil eye” and is widely recognized throughout the Middle
East and North Africa.
o In mundane scholarship it is theorized to have originated in Carthage and to spring
from Tanit worship. The reality is the inverse: True Hamsas are created by the
Sisterhood of Fatima to both “warn and ward” against Tanit and her cultists.

• Mano Pantea: Also known as the Hand-of-the-All-Goddess. Known to Egyptians as the

Two Fingers, with the fingers representing Isis and Osiris; the thumb, their child Horus.
Used to invoke a protective spirit of parents over their child, it was later adopted (through
the Byzantine Empire) by Catholicism as a sign of benediction, derived from a Roman
symbol meaning “to speak” and eventually gaining a retconned meaning of the Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit.
o Mano Pantea was used by Tanit cultists to identify themselves to each other. The
meaning inverted when agents of Ra began using the symbol to expose Tanit
worshipers (by initiating false calls and returns; you give the sign and if the other
person responds you know you’ve found a Tanit cultist), eventually eking into
common Egyptian culture as a general ward for children against Tanit infections.
o Tanit cultists still use it as a ritualized greeting for each other. (The fact that a
number of organized religions adopted it suggests Tanit cultists infiltrated them at
very high levels.)

TRANSPORTATION
• Twin Cities Rapid Transit: Operates 524 miles of electric trolley lines, laced between
Minneapolis, St. Paul, and into the suburbs as far as Anoka and Lake Minnetonka.

UNIONS
• Minneapolis’ reactionary, anti-labor employers organized into the Citizen’s Alliance. They
blacklisted labor organizers, hired spies to keep tabs on “radicals”, crushed strikes,
maintained scab registries, etc.
• The Minneapolis CLA (Communist League of America) is led by Carl Skoglund, a Swedish
socialist who immigrated to America in 1911, and Vincent Ray Dunne. These Trotskyists
undermined the business-friendly leadership of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters
(IBT)
• The first strikes would not actually happen until 1934, but the union-business espionage
ran rampant through the ‘20s.

FARMER-LABOR PARTY
• Founded in 1918, by 1925 the Minnesota Farmer-Labor party – operating on a platform of
farmer and labor union protection – was beginning to dominate statewide elections.

GENERAL RESEARCH

HAMSA
• Occult 1 / Library Use: The Hamsa symbol, also referred to as the Hand of Fatima and the Hand
of Miriam, is a protective sigil or charm taking the figure of a hand with an eye in the center of its
palm. It is supposed to guard against the “evil eye” and is widely recognized throughout the Middle
East and North Africa, with some scholars believing it to have originated in Carthage.

TANIT PARASITES
• Lab Analysis (Chemistry/Medicine): The purplish color in the whiskey / denatured
ethanol is due to a contaminant. This appears to be bacteriological in nature.
o If analyzing raw ethanol, this will be remarkable because alcohol is generally
antibacterial – it destroys cell membranes, penetrates the bacteria’s cytoplasm,
denatures its proteins, coagulates the enzymes, binds water (dehydrating the cell),
and dissolves fats, leading to massive cell dysfunction and death.
o Closer inspection of the bacteria reveals it to be disturbingly unusual: The cell
envelope is shaped like a symmetric hexagon. Its internal structures are simplistic,
similar to those of a prokaryote (the first form of life on Earth) and lacking
anything suggestive of an internal nucleus. It’s possible that this is some atavistic
remnant of an alternative evolutionary path.
o Chemistry 1 / Medicine 1: The hexagonal cells interact strongly with each
other, forming honeycomb-like lattices and, due to their symmetrical nature,
capable of forming tightly-packed, perfectly tiled structures similar to hexagonal
crystals. Within these larger hexagonal bio-crystals, the individual cells appear to
take on specialized functions – although its impossible to determine exactly what
those functions are, it would seem they serve a function similar to organelles.
Thus, in relation to the prokaryote-like individual cells, the bio-crystals are analog
to more complex eukaryotic cells – although organized in a way seemingly
completely alien to terrestial biology.
o Chemistry 2 / Medicine 2: The interactions between the cells within each bio-
crystal seem to possess a neuronal character – perhaps synapse-like micro-
structures could explain the coordination between the various “organelle cells” of
the crystal, in a fashion similar to a nervous system or brain tissue.
 GM Note: If investigated in a later time period, researchers might detect
electrical signals “disturbingly reminiscent of human brain activity”, but
neither the equipment nor knowledge of the human mind necessary for
this conjecture exists in the 1920’s.
o Organic Tissue: If exposed to organic tissue (whether human or not), the tanit
parasites will swarm – forming a kind of purple halo around the tissue.
(Investigation of this specific phenomenon with Chemistry or Medicine would
suggest that this is stimulating biocrystal growth, as described above – and
functionally reducing those point spends by 1 point each.)
• Tophet Serum: If dosed with tophet serum, a character must make a 2 point Stability test
each day. If they succeed on three tests in a row, the effects dissipate and no further tests
are required. (During this time, they will begin to manifest hallucinations, motor apraxia,
and alien hand syndrome.)
o If the character is Shaken by tophet serum, they begin to manifest symptoms of
dissociate personality. (The bicameral division of their mind is breaking down,
Left Hand of Mythos
10
their perception of self is evaporating, and the Tanit consciouness is striving to take
sole control of their body). This takes the form of a Driver that can impel actions
(i.e., Tanit’s consciousness is taking control). As with any other Driver, obeying
the driver restores Stability per the normal rules, but also prompts a 7 point
Stability test (due to Possession).
o If the character is Blasted by tophet serum, in addition to permanent mental
illness they also develop an Eye of Tanit on their left hand.
o A character who is rendered Incurably Insane by tophet serum has become a
fully-realized host of Tanit.
o Non-Human Hosts: TBD.
o GM Note: Those who observe the progression of tophet serum may realize that
virtually everyone who drinks it will, in fact, be lost to the Tanit consciousness.
Realizing that hundreds of serum-tainted whiskey bottles have been sold (and
presumably drunk), they may make the intuitive leap that Barca has successfully
created hundreds of fully-realized Tanit hosts. (Cthulhu Mythos could also provide
a similar revelation.) Where are they? Some might be lost to insane asylums, but
most are just quietly continuing the façade of their mortal lives – an invisible army
of sleeper agents who will continue to pursue the eventual re-awakening of Tanit
throughout the 20th century.

PROACTIVE 1: HAND ON THE STREET

SEEING THE HAND

• Can happen at almost any time that the PCs are walking or driving along the street.
• Shouldn’t be a busy street (the hand doesn’t want to attract a crowd or anything).

TRACKING THE HAND

• Survival: The hand appears to have tracked through some talc powder and telltale traces
can be followed back to a nearby apartment (it dropped out of the open window).
• Streetwise: Can find a couple of kids bowling with bicycle rims who, with a little
Reassurance, saw the hand drop out of the window.
• Library Use/Simple Search: A day or two later a small item will appear in the
Minneapolis Star about a body being found in the area without a left hand.

THE APARTMENT
• A single-room apartment with yellowish, nicotine-stained plaster walls.
o A rumpled Murphy’s bed.
• Kurt Nordberg lies dead with his head down on a plain wooden table with two chairs that’s
shoved up against the wall against a partially open window.
o His left hand is missing.
o A half-empty bottle of Minnesota 13 Whiskey is on the table next to his right hand.
• Streetwise: Kurt has a son named Erik. They had a screaming argument two nights ago.

ERIK
• His father was a drunk (that’s what the argument was about).
• His father had been suffering from a muscular dystrophy.
o GM Note: This is why the full transformation failed and the hand wandered off on its own.
• He knows that his father bought his liquor from a man named Oleg Andersson.

PROACTIVE 3: WHISKEY DEATH

OFFICER OSCAR LUNDSEN: Stole one of the bottles of whiskey from James J. Hill House and
then died while drinking it in his small St. Paul flat later. When he didn’t show up for a shift, a
patrol car found his body.
• Left hand is missing.
• Prop: Minnesota 13 Whiskey

Left Hand of Mythos

14
NODE 0: HILL HOUSE
(240 Summit Ave., St Paul, MN)

BACKGROUND – HILL FAMILY:

• James J. Hill (1838-1916) was the CEO of the Great Northern Railway.
• Met Mary Theresa Mehegan (a daughter of Irish immigrants; waitress working in the
Merchants Hotel in St. Paul) in 1864; married her in 1867. She died in 1921.
• They had 10 children together: Mary, James, Louis, Clara, Katherine (d. 1876, infant),
Charlotte (d. 1923, pneumonia), Ruth, Rachel, Gertrude, and Walter.
• The children have largely scattered – most to New York. Walter lives on a ranch in
Montana. (Louis and James are still local, but went with Ruth and Gertrude back to New
York a couple weeks ago. Ruth and Gertrude were in town arranging the donation of the
house with Rachel.) Only Rachel is currently in town.

BACKGROUND – THE MANSION:

• Exterior built of a reddish stone.
• The mansion was completed in 1891. It was the largest and most expensive home in
Minnesota, containing 36,500 square feet on five floors (13 bathrooms, 22 fireplaces, 16
cut-glass chandeliers, profusion of elaborately carved oak and mahogany woodwork, a
three-story pipe organ).
• President McKinley visited in 1899.
• Back side of the house is on a kind of bluff. It looks out past the Cathedral (which rears up
from some unseen depth) and across the sweeping, gently swelling hills of Saint Paul.

OVERVIEW – THE PARTY:

• Rachel Hill wanted to throw one last party before she and her sisters donate the house to
the Roman Catholic Dioceses of St. Paul. (They have recently purchased the house from
her mother’s estate.)
• She invited 8 people. 13 people actually showed up because people brought friends or
dates, so there were a total of 15 people in the house (including Rachel and the house
servant Lucretia Gray).
• Gladys Roy left early (because she has an aerobatics show in the morning).
• Rachel went to bed with headache shortly after midnight.
• At 1 AM (the thirteenth hour), the Tanit-tainted liquor activated. Alicia Corey activated
her Hamsa, which disrupted the ascendance of Tanit, but killed everyone there. Alicia
Corey’s left hand was partially saved; but the partially ascended Tanit fragments in the left
hands of the other guests separated from their hosts and crawled away.
• Screams awoke Lucretia. She woke Rachel. The police were phoned and arrived around
1:40 AM.

LOCATIONS OF DEAD BODIES
• Carriage Porch (1)
• Hall (2)
• Library (3)
• Art Gallery (3)
• Balcony (1 + Alicia Corey’s body)
• Attic Theater (2 + 2 Hands of Tanit)
• GM Note: If the number of bodies are compared to the count of guests given by Rachel, it will be noted
that one is missing: Gladys Roy (who left).

INVESTIGATING DEAD BODIES

• Left hands are missing. Stumps left behind are not bleeding.
• Some bodies have a small amount of bleeding from nostrils or ears.
• Medicine: The flesh on the stumps are pink and new.
• Medicine 1 / Pump Stomach: The contents of the victims’ stomachs are slightly
purplish and resemble a non-Newtonian fluid; like water mixed with corn starch. (This can
be analyzed with proper lab equipment. See General Research: Lab Analysis – Tanit Parasites.)
• Medicine 2 / Autopsy: Cause of death is acute hemorrhaging in the brain, similar to an
aneurysm.
o Autopsy: Multiple sites in the right side of the brain are damaged. Left side of the
brain appears entirely healthy.
o Autopsy (Medicine 1): The Broca area of the brain, in the left hemisphere,
shows signs of very slight atrophy.
• Autopsy – Alicia’s Body / Hand of Tanit: Tissue in the left hand has been replaced
with some sort of purplish, crystalline structure. (This counts as a 1-point dedicated pool
when investigating the tophet serum, allowing the researcher to automatically see how the
hexagonal cells are forming the biocrystalline structures.)
o Alicia’s Biocrystal: The structure has decayed throughout her hand; some sort
of apoptosis or necrotic effect damaging the tissue. It extends up the Ulnar canal –
the semi-rigid longitudinal canal in the wrist which allows passage of the ulnar
artery and ulnar nerve into the hand.
o Hands of Tanit: The biocrystalline structures are connected to the eye in the
palm of the hand. Their exact function is unclear.

AROUND THE HOUSE

• Minnesota 13 Whiskey Bottles: They were being drunk everywhere.
o Prop: Minnesota 13 Whiskey
o See General Research – Minnesota 13.
• 13 Black Cat Flyers: Several people have them in their pockets, etc. There may also be a
few strewn around on tables and the like where people abandoned them.
o GM Note: Gladys Roy was handing them out.

ARRIVAL @ HILL HOUSE
• Prop: Photo of James J. Hill House
• Gaggle of reporters at the front gate (which is being watched by two patrolmen).
• Police officers mill about on the front lawn.
• Detective Fred Watson:
o Prop: Photo of Fred Watson
o Police arrived. He got called in. Saw the missing left hands and concluded this was
the type of case he should call the PCs in for.
o Cleared the cops out of the mansion so that the PCs would have a clean slate (and
to put some sort of stop to any weird rumors that are beginning to spread).
o Three Key Points:
 There are bodies; he doesn’t know how many.
 Rachel Hill, the owner of the house, is in her room on the second floor.
 He’s going to go talk to the reporters now; the PCs should go look at the
house.
 GM Note: Fred won’t think to mention Lucretia (she’s just a Negro servant after
all); but if someone explicitly asks if there are any other witnesses he’ll mention her.
She’s in her room in the Servant’s Quarters on the third floor.
o GM Note: The structural key here is that the PCs should be allowed to do their own
investigation. If they just listen to Watson tell them what he’s found or have him lead them
around the house, that’s really boring game play.
• Cops: If the PCs question the cops who were cleared out by Fred, they can tell them:
o The known locations of dead bodies (see below; although they don’t single out
Alicia Corey).
o That Rachel Hill is in her room on the second floor.
o That Lucretia Gray, the household servant, is in her room on the third floor.
• Carriage Porch: There is a corpse with a drop-cloth over it on the front stairs.

• Coats and purses are stacked on a divan.
o Simple Search: To sort through the IDs.
o Evelyn’s ID: Evelyn Candide’s ID is here, so if they haven’t found the bodies in
the attic yet, this will indicate a missing woman.
o Alicia’s ID: Alicia Corey’s purse is here and a photograph inside can be used to
identify her corpse. It also lists her name and address on a small “Please Return”
card.

FIRST FLOOR – TERRACE

• Evidence Collection 1 / Evidence Collection (Lucretia’s Testimony): There is a
trail of fingerprints “walking” across the terrace. (Go from the house down the stairs and
then vanish into the grass.)

o Shattered Hamsa: Clutched in her left hand, there are shards of glass and lead.
 Prop: Shattered Hamsa
 GM Note: This was Alicia’s Hamsa charm.
o Slit in the Palm: There is a strange slit or cut in the palm.
 No blood, but some kind of clear, jelly-like substance in the slit.
 Medicine: The liquid is aqueous humor — the introcular fluid which fills
the eyeball.
o GM Note: Alicia’s purse and ID are downstairs in the Music Room.

NODE 1: 13 BLACK CATS

BACKGROUND – THE BLACK CATS

• First organized in 1924 with 13 members, headed by Bon MacDougall.
o Membership roster is in constant flux with members coming and going.
o Original members: Bon MacDougall, Al Johnson, Gladys Roy, Fronty Nichols,
Heard McClelland, Chief White Eagle, Jack Frye, Paul Richter, Art Goebel,
Spider Matlock, Gladys Ingle, Frank Lockhart, Reginald Denny, Babe Stapp, Bill
Lind, and Sam Greenwald.
• Home base is Burdett Airport in Los Angeles, CA.
• Uniform is a black sweater with a 13 Black Cats patch on the front and names on the back.
o Each name has 13 letters; if it doesn’t, nickname is added.
o White claw insignias; one for each time they’ve fell. (Under Black Cat rulings,
after the eighth claw they can no longer fly with the troupe, because cats only have
nine lives. Reginald Denny received two when joining the troupe because he’d
been felled twice during the Great War; his joining may have also been a publicity
stunt arranged by his studio.)
o The logo of the black cat was created by Bon MacDougall “in regard to the ancient
Egyptian religion and it honored the sacred cat of Bubastes”. He flew with it before
the formation of the group; adding the 13 for the group.
• Appeared in Howard Hughes’ Hells Angels and other 1920s films.
• Used no parachutes until 1927 (when it became law).
• Disbanded in 1929. (Members of the troupe went on to found TWA.)

AEROBATICS SHOW

START: If the timing makes it possible, the show has already started as the PCs approach.
• They see a low-flying plane pass overhead. Someone is dangling helplessly from it!

AEROBATICS SHOW: Play Aerobatic Show – Video (skip to 00:15).

• Aerobatics Show – Photo 1 (Race Car): Gladys Roy appears a race car keeping pace with a
plane.
• Aerobatics Show - Photo 2 (Climbing Aboard): Gladys stands up in the car, grabs the passing
plane, and climbs aboard.
• Aerobatics Show – Photo 3 (Wing Leap): Gladys jumps to another plane.
• Aerobatics Show – Video: As she does so, a third plane comes up… this one having lost its
wheel. Gladys collects a wheel from the second plane, transfers to the third, and replaces
the wheel.
• Aerobatics Show – Photo 4 (Dog): After changing the wheel, she climbs up onto the wing, and
does a handstand. As she comes down, she’s confronted by an angry dog. The dog
threatens her, she backs away…
• Aerobatics Show – Photo 5 (Tennis): … and leaps onto another plane! This one is outfitted
with a tennis set, which she proceeds to play with another barnstormer.
• The show continues like this for some time, with various stunt performers on both land
and ground doing a variety of amazing feats. The planes themselves also do a variety of
stunts and formation flying.

OTHER POSSIBLE STUNTS

• Flying through a building or crashing into a building, tree, object, etc.
• Blowing up planes in the air; passengers and pilot eject.
• Spinning airplanes (sometimes engulfed in fire) toward the ground, but not crashing.
• Loops while barnstormers stand on the tip of each wing.
• Flying lower and picking up hats with wing tips.
• Hanging from rope ladders or dangling upside down by ropes; swinging under the plane on
wires.
• Parachute performances.
• Flying inverted for extended periods.
• Riding a bicycle dangling from a rope and then parachuting down to the ground.
• Landing upside down.
• Saloon brawls on wing tops.
• Staging a fight on the wing with one man getting knocked off with a punch.

CURTISS AIRFIELD – FALCON HEIGHTS
• Prop: Photo of Curtiss Airfield
• Bill Kidder founded the airfield in April 1919; Minnesota’s first full-service airport.
• Licensed by the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company for selling and servicing Curtiss
airplanes.
• Snelling & Larpenteur Avenue (dirt-lane roads at the time) would be lined with cars on
weekends to watch the planes.
o Just east of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
• Offers short plane rides for $15.
• Additional Resources:

GLADYS ROY: See character sheet.

OTHER MEMBERS OF 13 BLACK CATS: Have no real connection to events, but…

• Know that Gladys Roy was talking about going to Rachel’s party last night and having a
grand old time.
• Alicia Corey went with Gladys and didn’t show up for work this morning. (Caused a
headache with the box office.)

24
NODE 2: MINNESOTA 13 / BOOTLEGGERS
BOOTLEGGING
• Cop Talk – The O’Connor System:
o The former police chief of St. Paul, John O’Connor, established the O’Connor
System, in which the police allow organized crime figures to “layover” in St. Paul
as long as they don’t perform any criminal activities there in exchange for payoffs
and kickbacks.
o The primary liaison is “Dapper” Dan Hogan, boss of St. Paul’s Irish Mob. But Kid
Cann of Minneapolis has been benefiting from it, too, ever since the “handshake”
deal which settled their mutual territories.
o Cann is the guy in charge of virtually all the bootlegging in the Twin Cities. If he’s
not doing it himself, he knows who is. He can be found in the Cotton Club in
Minneapolis most nights.
• Library Use: As far as the mainstream papers are concerned — the Tribune, Daily Star,
Pioneer, St. Paul Dispatch — there is no organized crime in the Twin Cities. The only
possible explanation is that pressure is being applied to keep it out of the papers.
o Library Use 1: Smaller, tabloid newspapers occasionally attempt to cover local
political corruption and criminal activity, which is apparently rife. (See O’Connor
System above.)
• Streetwise:
o Moonshine generally isn’t made inside the city limits.
o Bootleggers run the liquor in from out-of-town distilleries & make the local sales.
o Kid Cann is the mob boss who runs most or all of the local bootleggers. Everybody
knows that.
o Streetwise 1: There’s a network of supply – the guys in charge don’t just get
booze to the bootleggers; they’re also in charge of the smuggling operations that
get the distilleries their raw alcohol.
MINNESOTA 13 WHISKEY BOTTLES
• Prop: Minnesota 13 Bottle
• The whiskey has a slightly purplish color.
• Craft/Chemistry: Can determine that these bottles are brand new; not from 1905.
• Chemistry: Can detect the presence of the Tanit parasites. (See General Research: Lab
Analysis – Tanit Parasites.)
• Chemistry: The Whiskey has been flavored with Juicy Fruit gum.
o Chemistry 1: The Juicy Fruit may have been used to cover up the flavor of
denatured alcohol.
o Library Use / Cop Talk: Using Juicy Fruit as a flavoring is a unique trait of
Stearns County bootleggers, up near Holdingford (“moonshine capital of
Minnesota”).
• Leveraged Clue (Juicy Fruit Flavoring / Minnesota 13 Label)
o Oral History (Stearns County): Can find someone willing to identify Node 6:
Davis Farm as the source of this whiskey.

PETE’S: A speakeasy on Hennepin Avenue, north of the river. NPC: Oleg Anderson can be found
here.

25
NODE 3: ALICIA COREY’S BOARDING HOUSE
(2701 Park Ave., Minneapolis, MN)

Left Hand of Mythos

26
MA KELLEY’S HOUSE FOR YOUNG WOMEN
• A wooden, hand-painted sign declares as much on the sloped front lawn. An attached
lower placard reads ROOM FOR RENT.
• Ma Kelley is a woman in her mid-50s. Widowed when her husband was killed in the war.
She knows what the Girls know (below), and can also provide Alicia Corey’s rental
application.
• Men are generally not allowed through the door at any hour; if they have official
credentials, she won’t make a fuss about it, but it will nevertheless startle the girls.
• Bedrooms: One of the second floor Chambers is occupied by Ma Kelley. The other four
are furnished for rental. Three are occupied (including Alicia’s); the fourth is currently
available for rent.

ALICIA COREY’S RENTAL APPLICATION

• She moved into Ma Kelley’s in July.
• Lists a forwarding address: 169 Page Street West, St. Paul, MN. (Node 5: Fatima’s Shrine)

THE GIRLS
• Betty, Grace
• They probably don’t’ know that Alicia is dead (unless it’s been a couple of days, in which
case the cops have followed up).
• Alicia always paid her rent promptly in cash.
• She worked as a secretary, but they realize they don’t know for what firm.
• She never had any guests that they can recall, but she did keep strange hours from time to
time. (Ma Kelley doesn’t have any sort of curfew, so this wasn’t considered a problem or
anything.)
• She’d once mentioned during dinner that she had been in Cairo. The girls thought this was
terribly exotic, but it didn’t seem as if Alicia wanted to talk about it. (Betty is convinced
this means that she has a dark and mysterious past; probably featuring a lover who tragically
died.)

ALICIA COREY’S ROOM

• Furnished with care and love.
• A handmade quilt on the bed. (Features an arabesque design indicative of it being Egyptian
in origin.)
• Writing Desk: Everything is meticulously clean. Any written matter has been carefully
destroyed.
• Loose Floor Board: Under the bed. Alicia Khouri’s Diary is hidden inside.

Left Hand of Mythos

27
ALICIA COREY’S BACKGROUND
• Alicia’s real name is Alicia Khouri.
• Egyptian descent.
• Rashida Khouri, Alicia’s mother, is a Hu-manifestation of Ra and a Sister of Fatima.
• Alicia learned the teachings of the Sisterhood from her mother, but had not yet been
indoctrinated into the inner mysteries of the coven. (She didn’t know that her mother was
a Hu-manifestation of Ra.)
• Gladys Roy had alerted the Sisterhood that there was Tanit activity in the Twin Cities.
Alicia was sent to conduct an investigation. She had tracked the cult activity to kidnappings
at Harriet Tubman’s Asylum for Colored Orphans (Node 4), but gotten no further in her
investigation at the time of her death.
• Investigators may suspect that Corey was directly targeted in response to her investigation,
but this is not the case. Her exposure to the Tophet serum whiskey was coincidental.

Left Hand of Mythos

28
NODE 4: HARRIET TUBMAN’S ASYLUM FOR COLORED ORPHANS

BACKGROUND
• During Jim Crow era, major orphanages would not accept black children.
• In 1905, two Quaker sisters named Anna and Hannah Glass opened Harriet Tubman’s
Asylum for Colored Orphans.
• Located in a formerly abandoned hotel in the Rondo neighborhood west of downtown St.
Paul.
• Anna died of typhoid in 1913.
• There are currently 47 children.
• Small staff of female attendants (of which Perlie Coleman is representative). Marcus
Washington serves as a maintenance man and is now the next best thing they have to a
security guard.

BACKGROUND - TANIT CULTISTS

• 5 kids have been kidnapped from the asylum by Tanit cultists. (They’re taken to Node 7:
Harris Chemical Plant.)
• St. Paul Police have taken cursory reports, but have concluded that the kids are just run-
aways.
• The staff has been similarly unable to get the local press interested.
• If either of those things were to change, the Tanit cultists would back off and leave the
other children in the asylum alone. (They assume this will happen at some point, but aren’t
surprised it hasn’t yet: They picked an asylum for black children for a reason.)

Left Hand of Mythos

29
INVESTIGATING
• Evidence Collection: New locks have recently been placed on the windows.
• Evidence Collection: There’s a chemical residue on the carpet Alex Griffin’s bedroom.
o Chemistry: It’s a patented polysaccharide created by a Minneapolis company
called Harris Chemical (see Node 7: Harris Chemical Plant).
• Streetwise: Canvassing the neighborhood will discover that a Harris Chemical Plant truck
has been seen parked near the orphanage during the time of each disappearance. (See Node
7: Harris Chemical Plant.)

MISSING KIDS (DATE TAKEN)

• Thomas Young (August 30th) – missing from his bed, window unlocked (staff did, in fact,
assume he was run-away)
• Millie Clark (September 8th) – snatched from the street
• Edward Robinson (October 10th) – was missing during a headcount following a recess
period
• Frances Allen (October 31st) – missing from her bed, cheap old lock had been jimmied
(staff replaced the locks on all the windows after this)
• Alex Griffin (November 11th) – missing from his bed, window was broken, other kids in
his room were slow to wake up (Medicine: they were gassed)

NODE 5: FATIMA’S SHRINE
(169 Page Street West, St. Paul, MN)

LOCATION:
• Across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Paul.
• Couple blocks off the streetcar lines.

Left Hand of Mythos

31
THE HOUSE
Back Door: Leads to kitchen.
Front Entry: Front door leads to a small coat room. Stairs lead up to the indoor garden and front
room.
• Gardening boots on the mat, but no coats on the hooks. (The boots, on closer inspection,
are unused.)
• Architecture / Evidence Collection: There’s a secret hatch in the wall behind the
coat rack. (You can grab the rack and pull the whole wall away.) Behind the hatch is a
staircase leading to the basement.
Indoor Garden: Opens from the front room.
• Glass walls let in the sun.
• Tiered platforms hold numerous flowering plants.
• Biology: The flowers growing here are Rosa richardii, acacia, willowherb, dragonwort,
and Crinum lilies. These are all species notably native to Egypt.
o Medicine 1 / History: Historically, all of these species had medical applications
in Egypt (and the Mediterranean in general).
Front Room: Opens to the indoor garden. Doors to the kitchen and two bedrooms.
• Well-accoutered. A sofa, two chairs, and a coffee table.
• The coffee table has a magazine rack on one side with several magazines in it.
• Evidence Collection: The magazine are all from January 1925.
Kitchen: Backdoor leads to the backyard. Another door leads to the front room.
• Everything looks normal at first glance. But casual inspection reveals that the cupboards are
empty and the food packages on the counters are also empty.
• Icebox: Empty. There’s no ice.
• Kitchen Table: There’s a stack of Prop: 13 Black Cats Flyers on the table.
Bedrooms: Each has a door leading to the front room.
• Single Beds: The quilts
• Bedside Table: Drawer empty.
• Closets: Empty.
Basement Shrine: Stairs down from the hidden panel in the front entry.
• Basement has been converted into a work space, with a large table in the middle of the
room.
• Letter: Prop: Letter to Gladys is lying on the table.
• Photostat Machine: With more Prop: 13 Black Cat Flyers next to it.
• Shrine: On the far wall, there’s a shrine built around a Hamsa made from lapis lazuli.
Stubby white candles covered in melted wax surround the hand. (If the Hamsa is removed,
the Eye of Ra can be found carved into the wall behind it.)
• Map of the Twin Cities: Thumb-tacked to the wall. (Prop: Map of the Twin Cities)
o GM Background: The map shows locations Alicia Corey was investigating for
possible Tanit cultist activity. The only non-eliminated location (labeled “Harriet”)
is the Node 4: Harriet Tubman’s Asylum for Colored Orphans. The name “John Barca”
has also been written on the map, perhaps allowing the PCs to research him.

Left Hand of Mythos

32
NODE 6: DAVIS FARM

• Located in Stearns County near Holdingford (the “moonshine capital of Minnesota”).

• About 90 miles north of the Twin Cities.
• Bootlegging is, in fact, rampant up here. The biggest moonshine-brewing operation is run
by the monks of St. John’s Abbey, but a lot of local farms (currently mired in the middle of
the Agricultural Depression that lasted from 1920 through 1934) get in on the action.

THE DAVIS FARM

• They farm corn and have a small number of cattle. The fields are harvested now, so there
are just stubs of corn stalks jutting up here and there like a primitive, haphazard cemetery.
• They’ve had some light snow up here and the fields are dusted with it (although you can
still see the raw, frozen dirt between the small drifts).
• The buildings are set back from the road, with a narrow drive running between the shields
and then dropping over a small rise.
• It’s a simple farm: There’s a house, a barn, and a machine shed.

THE HOUSE
• Ellie Davis and Billie Davis live here.
• Living room and kitchen on the ground floor.
• Bedroom and bathroom upstairs.

Left Hand of Mythos

33
THE BARN
• Stalls for a half dozen milk cows and mounds of hay for their winter feed.
• Hidden Kegs: Kegs of Minnesota 13 whiskey are hidden under the hay mound. (See Node
2: Minnesota 13 for analysis.)

THE MACHINE SHED

• Crowded with two tractors (one no longer working) and the Davis’ pick-up truck, along
with corn hooks, plows, hay rakes, harrows, and grain bins.
• Fake Wall: The back wall of the machine shed is fake. There’s a hidden room in the back
with Ellie’s still.

THE STILL
• Chemistry: It’s a sophisticated set-up. Ellie is re-naturing the denatured alcohol and then
using bubblegum to hide the lingering flavor.
• Ethanol Barrels: Label coding on the bottom of the barrels indicates that they came from
Node 7: Harris Chemical Plant.

Left Hand of Mythos

34
NODE 7: HARRIS CHEMICAL PLANT
(4121 Minnehaha Ave., Minneapolis, MN)

OVERVIEW
• Located along Minnehaha Avenue, which runs between downtown Minneapolis and
Minnehaha Falls.
• A Milwaukee Road rail line runs behind the chemical plant, servicing other factories and
grain silos that run up and down the western side of Minnehaha Avenue.
• A rail spur runs into the Harris loading dock, it’s not unusual for 1-3 tanker cars to be
parked there (loading or unloading chemicals).

BACKGROUND
• Founded by Ezra Harris in 1895.
• Ezra Harris died in 1905 and the company was inherited by his son Clarence.
• Clarence died in 1923 without heir and the company was acquired by John Barca.
(Clarence was actually poisoned by Tanit cultists specifically so that they could acquire the
company.)
• Harris Chemicals has a contract with the federal government to denature alcohol: Although
banned by Prohibition, alcohol still has a wide variety of necessary uses in industry. When
it became clear that this industrial alcohol was being used to create illegal liquor, the
government began denaturing the alcohol — adulterating the alcohol with foul-tasting
additives that wouldn’t affect its industrial uses, but made it unpalatable for drinking.

Left Hand of Mythos

35
• Under Barca’s direction, some of the denatured alcohol is also adulterated with Tanit
parasites. This alcohol is then dropped off at an otherwise abandoned warehouse a few
blocks south on Minnehaha Avenue, where Oleg Andersson picks it up and takes it to Node
6: Davis Farm to be renatured and turned into Minnesota 13.
• The secret section of the denaturing plant where the Tanit parasites are added to the
alcohol is also being used as a convenient holding facility for kidnapped kids before they are
taken to Node 8: Minneapolis Federal Reserve.

SURVEILLANCE
• Workers: The plant employs nearly fifty people. It operates twenty-four hours a day in
three shifts, although the night shift is a skeleton crew.
• Security: There are four security guards on the day shifts (one at the front desk, one at
the loading docks, and two on patrol). At night this is increased to six security guards.
(This seems like an unusual amount of security for a business like this.)
• Loading Dock: There are usually 1-3 tanker cars on the Harris rail spur, which are filled
or emptied with special pipes and hoses before being picked up. Trucks arrive throughout
the day, loading and unloading barrels.
• Secure Denaturing Facility: External surveillance will note a special freight elevator on
the loading dock that requires special keys to access. (This freight elevator leads to the
denaturing facility.) PCs who gain access to the plant interior (getting hired, posing as
inspectors, etc.) will be able to identify the location and public function (denaturing
alcohol) of the secure facility.
• John Barca: Barca will intermittently stop by the facility. He’ll visit the management
offices and then go into the secure denaturing facility (on his way to the Tanit infusion
area). Streetwise or Bureaucracy pegs him as out of place (his suit and shoes several tax
brackets above anyone else working here). He can be followed back to Node 8: Minneapolis
Federal Reserve.
• Company-Owned Truck: Harris Chemical Plant has a single company-owned truck,
which can be noticed as distinct from the other trucks coming and going from the loading
dock. Following this truck will reveal a handful of local deliveries, but also notably:
o Being loaded with barrels of denatured alcohol that’s dropped at an abandoned
warehouse a few blocks north. (Oleg Andersson then picks these barrels and takes
them to Node 6: Davis Farm.)
o Transporting kidnapped kids (see below).
o Leaving empty to pick up tophet serum from Node 8: Minneapolis Federal Reserve and
bringing it back here.
• Moving Alex Griffin: During the night shift on Sunday, November 15th, Alex Griffin is
moved to Node 8: Minneapolis Federal Reserve by four Tanit cultists in the company-owned
truck. (He’s brought down the secure elevator and loaded into the company truck.)

Left Hand of Mythos

36
QUESTIONING WORKERS
• Drivers: The Harris drivers can give details about their normal delivery schedule and the
secure freight elevator used for processing denatured alcohol.
o They also intermittently pick up crats from Node 8: Minneapolis Federal Reserve,
which are sent up the secure freight elevator to the denaturing facility.
o Any Interpersonal 1 / Credit Rating 1: The Harris drivers will reveal that
they intermittently drop denatured alcohol at an abandoned warehouse a couple
blocks north of the chemical plant. They don’t know, but they suspect what
happens to it after they drop it off.
• Other Workers: Any Harris worker can tell the PCs about normal plant operations,
layout, and the secure denaturing facility.

ENTRANCES / GETTING IN
• Front Entrance: On the corner of the building. Leads to the Front Office.
• Loading Dock – Front Office: A door leads from the Loading Dock to the Front
Office.
• Loading Dock – Factory Floor: Large doors lead from the Loading Dock to the
Factory Floor.
• Loading Dock – Freight Elevator: Goes up to the Testing Labs on the 3rd Floor.
• Loading Dock – Secure Elevator: Goes up to the Denaturing Facility on the 4th Floor.
• Windows: 1st Floor windows are barred (except in the Front Office). Windows on the
higher storeys are unbarred (except for the 5th Floor, which are heavily secured and cannot
be opened).

Left Hand of Mythos

37
INTERIOR

1st FLOOR – LOADING DOCK

• Trucks can drive into the rear loading yard from the street; there’s an entrance gate and an
exit gate.
• The rail spur leads directly across Harris Chemical’s yard and into the loading area.
• There are two freight elevators — one leads to testing labs on the 3rd Floor; a secure
freight elevator leads to the Secure Denaturing Facility on the 4th Floor.
• Large loading doors lead to the Factory Floor.

Left Hand of Mythos

38
1st FLOOR - FRONT OFFICE
• Located on the corner of the building.
• Staff here manages customers and processes shipping documents brought here from the
loading docks.
• Stairs lead up to the Management Offices on the 2nd Floor; and down to the Basement.
• Bureaucracy: There’s plenty of evidence to be found here of John Barca’s ownership of
the company, although he seems to take little interest in the day-to-day management,
except for the denaturing contracts.

1st FLOOR - FACTORY FLOOR

• On the far side of the loading docks from the Front Office.
• Various vats, pressure vessels, and the like.
• The ceiling is two storeys high with windows primarily on the upper level.
• Stairs lead down into the Basement; and up to the Testing Labs.
• The Management Offices overlook the factory floor; there’s a balcony and also large glass
windows. A staircase leads from the offices down to the factory floor.

BASEMENT
• Non-volatile storage.
• PCs can waste a lot of time down here, but there’s little of interest.
• File Cabinets: Digging through these dusty records with Bureaucracy will reveal the
factory’s history of ownership (including John Barca’s current ownership). It will also
reveal that the 4th Floor was heavily revamped to accommodate the federal denaturing
contracts, and further construction work was done up there following Barca’s acquisition
of the company.

Left Hand of Mythos

39
2nd FLOOR – MANAGEMENT OFFICES
• These offices overlook the Factory Floor. (There’s a balcony and a glass wall. Stairs lead
down from the balcony to the Factory Floor.)
• In the corner of the building directly above the main entrance, there’s a spiral staircase
leading up to John Barca’s office (which is on the top floor of a tower). Bureaucracy in
Barca’s office both identifies him as the owner of Harris Chemical and reveals that chemical
shipments are being made from Node 8: Minneapolis Federal Reserve which he’s personally
overseeing (which doesn’t make a lot of sense, although they’re tied to the federal
denaturing contracts).

3rd FLOOR – TESTING LABS

• Chemistry reveals that these labs are conducting perfectly mundane testing and
development work; exactly what you’d expect from an industrial chemical plant.
• Well-secured doors limit access to the 4th Floor.

4th FLOOR – SECURE DENATURING FACILITY

• Can be accessed via well-secured stairwells from the 3rd Floor or via the secure freight
elevator from the Loading Docks.
• Evidence Collection / Bureaucracy: John Barca has left detailed instructions on the
specific quantity of denatured alcohol which, instead of being directly shipped out, should
be redirected to the 5th Floor. (These instructions explicitly identify John Barca.)
• Entrance to Tanit Infusing Facility: The entrance to the secure facility on the 5th
Floor is hidden, requiring a 1-point spend to find. (Any leveraged clued pertaining to the
secure facility — records of the facility, noticing the 5th Floor windows on the outside of
the building, etc. — removes the requirement for the 1-point spend.)

Left Hand of Mythos

40
5th FLOOR – TANIT INFUSING FACILITY
• In this special chemistry lab, Tanit parasites — stored in glass bottles containing purplish
liquid — are carefully infused into the denatured alcohol.
• Chemistry: Procedural notes here reveal that the Harris Chemical denaturing process has
been carefully designed to prepare the alcohol for infusion with the “tophet serum.”
(Infusing raw alcohol would apparently “sterilize” the serum.)
• Crates: Labels on empty and half-empty crates indicate that the “tophet serum” is shipped
here from Node 8: Minneapolis Federal Reserve.
o Bureaucracy 1: The markings indicate that the crates were stored in the vault at
the Federal Reserve Building.

5th FLOOR – HOLDING CELL

• Alex Griffin is held in a small, heavily soundproofed cell on the far side of the Tanit
Infusing Facility.
• Alex Griffin: Alex was kidnapped from Node 4: Harriet Tubman’s Asylum for Colored Orphans
and brought here several days ago. He doesn’t really understand what’s happening, he’s
very scared, but he’s just barely managing to keep it together. Any show of human
kindness or a suggestion that the PCs are going to take him somewhere safe triggers an
emotional breakdown (Reassurance can help pull him back together). Alex notably
overheard someone say that he was going to be “taken to the Fed,” although he doesn’t
know what that means.

NODE 8: MINNEAPOLIS FEDERAL RESERVE
(502 Marquette Ave., Minneapolis, MN)

BACKGROUND:
• 1913: Federal Reserve Act signed by Woodrow Wilson.
• 1914: Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis incorporated May 18th, directors elected over
the summer.
• October 1914: John H. Rich is appointed the first Minneapolis Federal Reserve Agent.
• January 1915: Offices established at New York Life Building (2nd Ave. South & 5th Street).
Vault space for cash rented from nearby banks.
• 1921: Federal Reserve had outgrown its current offices. Site purchased at 5th Street &
Marquette. Excavation of the site begins by the end of the year.
• During construction of the new building. John H. Rich dies and is replaced by John Barca.
By this time, all nine directors of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve are Tanit cultists.
• Designed by Cass Gilbert to feature classical architecture, the new building was also
designed to include a secret Tophet sanctuary beneath the vault in which child sacrifices
could be used to create tophet serum.
• 1923: Cornerstone of the new Federal Reserve Building is laid. (The cornerstone contains
a Tanit reliquary, part of a series of ceremonies which sanctify the building as a holy site.)
• 1924: Primary construction is completed. John Barca and the cultists begin using the
Tophet sanctuary create Tanit serum. Officially, the board of directors and various other
officers (all cultists) begun using the offices.

Left Hand of Mythos

42
• February 1st, 1925: Historically, the new Federal Reserve Building is occupied. The New
York Life Building offices are shut down and vault deposits are centralized in the new
building’s state-of-the-art vault.

WHAT THE FED OFFICIALLY DOES

• Economists: Collect and analyze data from across the Midwest to help the federal
government monitor the economy and set interest rates.
• Cash Reserve: The Federal Reserve Bank is a bank for banks. When the banks need bank
notes or coin, they request them from the Federal Reserve. That cash reserve (consisting of
millions of U.S. dollars and other currency instruments) are stored in the Fed’s vaults.

INFILTRATION
• Make an Appointment: Whether with John Barca or another member of the Fed staff.
Although these are all cultists, official business is being conducted as a cover for their
activities.
• Charity Event: Dolls for Family Welfare is a charity which, as the name suggests,
involves selling dolls to raise funds for charity. On Saturdays through the end of the year,
they set up in the lobby of the building, also offering people the opportunity to do a short
tour. The small crowds and/or tours offer the opportunity to perhaps slip away into the
deeper recesses of the building. (Prop: Dolls for Family Welfare)
• Fake Delivery: There are frequent deliveries to the building. These include periodicals
and other material for the Archives (which are currently in the process of being transferred
from the New York Life Building) and also construction material for the crews still
working on finishing the interior features and décor.

Left Hand of Mythos

43
• Breaking In: If the vault were operational (and full of cash), this would be virtually
impossible due to the extreme security measures that would be in place. Fortunately, this
is not the case and only a minimal security team is onsite (see below).
• Search Warrant & Police Raid: The PCs are working with Fred Watson, so it’s quite
plausible that they’ll go to the police with the evidence they have. If they do so, make sure
the PCs get an invite to be on the team serving the search warrants and expect a bloody
shoot out between cops and cultists. (Fred taking a bullet seems dramatically awesome.)
Alternatively, if you want to keep the ball in the PCs’ court, then “jurisdictional issues” can
be invoked between the federal government and local law enforcement that will delay the
law enforcement response by days or possibly even weeks.

NEW YORK LIFE BUILDING

Core Clue: John Barca spends little or no time at the old offices, conducting all of his business out
of the offices in the new Federal Reserve Building. (Basically any investigation into the Fed’s
activities at the New York Life Building should lead to some variation of, “This is all just business as
usual… but the new building is weird / upper management is being very secretive about it / I keep
trying to get transferred over there and apparently only people on a special list are allowed / etc.”)

New York Life Building:10-storey building with lower stories of St. Cloud granite and the
upper stories of pressed brick. Built in 1890.
• Lobby: The lobby is simple incredible, featuring a pair of floating, double-helix staircases.
• Federal Reserve first rented offices in 1915. They currently occupy two floors.
• Building contains 250 offices.
• Other tenants include: The National Mutual Life Association, Walter L. Badger Real Estate
and Loans, the Tontine Savings Association, Hennepin Commission Co. (a grain and stock
company), the Gale Agency (representing various stock companies), and multiple attorneys
(including Cross, Hicks, Carleton, & Cross; Weed Munro, Geo. Harold Smith; Edward C.
Gale & Walter C. Tiffany; Alvord C. Egelston & George H. White; Booth & Douglas).

RESEARCH

History: Easily pull up the public history of the Federal Reserve and, specifically, the Minneapolis
Federal Reserve as described above.

Art History – Newspaper Morgues: Local reporting features photographs of art being moved
into the new Federal Reserve Building. Art History indicates that this includes rare examples of
Carthaginian sculpture.

Bureaucracy: Obtain copies of the architectural plans for the new Federal Reserve Building.
• Architecture: It appears that an unusual steel alloy was used in the construction of the
building; reputedly for tensile strength, although it’s unclear why that would be necessary.
(Sourcing this alchemically infused steel could lead to another Tanit cultist operation at
your discretion.)
• Architecture: Studying the public plans makes it’s clear that there’s something missing
from them — a void directly underneath the Vault for which there are structural supports,
but no indication of what’s actually there.
• Architecture 1: There’s also something weird about one of the elevator shafts. It’s
designed for a greater height of operation than the other shafts, but there’s no visible
reason for it.
• GM Note: Copies of the full, uncensored plans can be found in Barca’s office. At your
discretion, copies might also be on file with the construction company (or, alternatively,
they’ve been mysteriously destroyed). Cass Gilbert, the architect, would almost certainly
have kept personal copies, but he now lives (and keeps his offices) in New York City.

Oral History / Intimidation – Construction Company: Talking to workers can probably

shake free whispers about a “secret” area of the site that only certain workers were allowed into.
• Those workers (who were actually Tanit cultists) have all left the company and vanished.
The person responsible for hiring them, Carl Mason, left the construction company and,
strangely, now works as an economic analyst for the Minneapolis Federal Reserve.

The Cass Gilbert Rabbit Hole: Pursuing Cass Gilbert, the architect who designed the
Minneapolis Federal Reserve, on the assumption that he must be part of the conspiracy can turn
into a huge rabbit hole. For example:
• He designed the Minnesota Capitol Building (completed in 1905).
• He designed the Woolworth Building in New York City (currently the tallest building in
the world). And does that mean that F.W. Woolworth, the founder of the F.W.
Woolworth Company, is a Tanit cultist? Are his nationwide five-and-dime stores acting as
operational centers for cult cells?
• He is currently designing the U.S. Supreme Court Building (which will be completed in
1935). If they’ve infiltrated the Federal Reserve, how deep has the cult penetrated the U.S.
government?
• Where is he now? On a trip to England with his family, where he’s to be granted an
audience with the British Royal Family. Can the PCs stop the British Empire from being
suborned?

Left Hand of Mythos

45
Or, alternatively, this really is just a rabbit hole: Cass Gilbert was just hired to do a job, modifying
the building to include the sub-vault space at the instruction of John Barca after the death of John
H. Rich. (You could even have him conveniently visiting family in Minnesota — he was raised here
— and available for questioning, revealing Barca as the source for the sub-vault modifications.)

46
IN THE AREA

Streetcars: Streetcar lines run on all sides of the Federal Reserve Building.

Coleman’s Greasing Station: Located directly behind the Federal Reserve Building. (It’s like a
service station / gas station.)

Syndicate Building: Built by a syndicate (thus the name) in 1883, the Syndicate Building
contains a quarter-million feet of retail space. Assume the investigators can buy almost anything
they want here.

Left Hand of Mythos

47
EXTERIOR

Architecture: The Minneapolis Federal Reserve is designed in neo-classical style, with pilasters
and a colonnade supporting an upper frieze. The Corinthian composite capitals are topped with
volutes decorated with acanthus leaves.
• There’s an upper parapet, from which the upper windows (requiring Locksmith, but
leading to the Executive Offices and Office Floor) could be accessed.

Occult / Art History: Acanthus leaves are a symbol of immortality and resurrection in Greco-
Phoenician art. Curiously, in Christian symbolism its meaning is inverted, representing sin,
punishment, and death.

48
ENTRANCES

MAIN ENTRANCE: The main entrance is up a short flight of stairs. The doors are embossed
metal, over a dozen feet high, and weigh nine tons. (They’re counterweighted so that a person can
open them. They’re kept open during the day. At night they’re barred from the inside.)
• This entrance leads through a doubly-barred foyer and, from there, into the Entrance
Lobby.
• Day & Night: 2 Fed Security Officers

DELIVERY ENTRANCE: The construction crews working on finishing the interior of the
building are using the delivery area to stage their work. At night, the heavy steel security doors are
locked and there’s a Fed Security Officer on duty.
• The Delivery Entrance provides access to the Counting Rooms & Archives.
Left Hand of Mythos
49
INTERIOR

CONSTRUCTION ZONES: There are still numerous areas of the Federal Reserve Building that
are under construction. During the day, construction crews are active throughout these areas.

ELEVATOR LOBBIES: Each level of the Federal Reserve Building has an elevator lobby with six
elevators. They provide immediate access to the Main Lobby, Banking Room, Archives, and Office
Floor. They do NOT go to the Vault or Counting Rooms.
• Director’s Private Elevator: One elevator goes to Barca’s office, although this requires
the use of a special security key. (Carried by Barca and also the security shift leader.) This
elevator shaft also provides access to the Tophet (but this can only be activated from
Barca’s office, see below).

Left Hand of Mythos

50
ENTRANCE LOBBY: A breathtaking chamber tiled in white marble with a bronze ceiling. A
grand marble staircase with a massive and intricately cast bronze railing curls up to the Banking
Room on the second level. A set of double mahogany doors leads to the elevator lobby.

Left Hand of Mythos

51
BANKING ROOM: A gargantuan chamber; the ceiling supported by huge marble pillars. The
floor is polished terrazzo. There are imposing marble desks around the perimeter, including a
security station. The center of the room is filled with bankers doing business from within steel-
barred cages. Red carpets run
• Day: 4 Fed Security Officers
• Occult: The red carpets are arranged
• Vault Access: The banking cages contain access to the Counting Rooms on the lower
level (and, from there, to the Vault).
• Elevator Lobby: At one end of the Banking Room.
• Grand Stairs: To Entrance Lobby.
• Stairs: To Archives & Office Floor.

Left Hand of Mythos

52
COUNTING ROOMS: On the lower level, there are multiple rooms dedicated to counting cash
(both outgoing and incoming). The machinery for automatically counting coins has recently been
installed, along with tallying calculators. There are also large supplies of canvas sacks and currency
straps, but no actual cash.
• Leaving: There are stairs leading up from the Counting Room to the Banking Floor. A
large corridor leads to the Delivery Entrance.
• Vault Access: You have to pass through the Counting Rooms to reach the Vault.

VAULT: The Vault is a vast, multi-chambered space in its own right. Although the heavy vault
door is locked, the Vault itself is empty.
• Tophet Entrance: The floor of the innermost chamber of the Vault is decorated with a
giant Eye of Horus. This pupil of the Eye can be rotated and then slid to the side, revealing
a staircase leading down to the Tophet.

Left Hand of Mythos

53
ARCHIVES: The Archives of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve have begun to be transferred from
the New York Life Building, but they have not yet begun to be unpacked. So there are empty
shelves and filing cabinets, along with a lot of crates neatly stacked here and ready for move-in day.
• Elevator Lobby: Can be accessed here.
• Stairs: Lead up to the Office Floor / Executive Offices.
• Mail Room: Mail is also sorted in this area, potentially allowing investigators to figure out
which offices in the building are currently occupied.

Left Hand of Mythos

54
OFFICE FLOOR / EXECUTIVE OFFICES: These occupy the upper floors of the Federal
Reserve Building. Desks and other furniture have been moved in, but only the Executive Offices
are occupied (by cultists).
• Elevator Lobby: Accessible here.
• Stairs: Lead down to Archives and the Banking Floor.
• Barca’s Office: Barca’s office is located among the Executive Offices.

BARCA’S OFFICE: The luxurious office you’d expect from the Director of the Minneapolis
Federal Reserve. Lush, blood-colored carpet. A huge desk of dark oak.
• Architecture / Bureaucracy: Barca has the true plans of the Vault, including the
Tophet chamber, in his desk. This includes both the Vault access (fully detailed) and the
Private Elevator can access the Tophet (though not exactly how) and broad details of
facility (although not the brass pressure chamber, which was constructed separately).
Physics notes that there’s some truly bizarre equipment installed in the walls of the
globular chamber, although its ultimate purpose is not clear from the blueprints.
• Private Elevator: A short back hallway leads from Barca’s office to his private elevator.
Calling the elevator requires a special key, which is carried by Barca and also the security
shift leader, or Lockpicking.
• Secret Elevator: A secret panel next to the elevator contains a switch. If flipped, the
private elevator will descend directly to the Tophet.

Left Hand of Mythos

55
THE TOPHET

Entry: Both the stairs from the Vault and the secret elevator from Barca’s Office descend into a
small entry chamber. A large brass incense bowl depends from the ceiling on thick ropes of silk.
(It’s not currently lit unless a ritual is planned for this same night.)

Cell: A small cell is built into the wall of the Entry. (The children are transferred here shortly
before the ritual.)
• There’s a stack of neatly folded children’s clothes (used) in the corner of the cell.

Laboratory: A door out of the entry chamber leads to a small chemistry laboratory. This is where
the Tophet serum is prepared (see “The Ritual,” below). The investigators can find vials, etc.
consistent with the Tophet serum they’ve encountered elsewhere.

Gantry: Another exit leads to a short gantry ending in a pressurized door leading into the Tophet
Chamber. The door can only be opened from this side (uh-oh) and a set of controls at the end of
the gantry will allow it to be extended out into the Tophet Chamber (providing access to the
pressure vessel in the center of the chamber, see below).

The Tophet Chamber: The Tophet Chamber is a huge, spherical chamber. The inner walls are
minutely etched with strange geometric patterns and runes. In the center of the chamber is a Brass
Sphere, which appears to simply float in place.
• Physics: The sphere would appear to be held in place by some form of powerful
electromagnetic field projected from the walls… which is odd, though, because brass isn’t
magnetic. So there must be something more complicated going on with the Sphere.
• Runes – Archaeology / Occult: These appear to be Phoenician runes.

The Brass Sphere: The sphere is a pressure vessel made from brass. Its surface is minutely etched
(in a fashion similar to an electrical board; although the PCs won’t be able to draw that
comparison). On the top of te
• Chemistry: The etching seems similar to acid-etching, but isn’t. It’s too minutely
detailed.
• Chemistry 1 / Physics 1: Examining the sphere with any kind of magnification (or a
point spend) reveals a fractal nature (although the character lacks the terminology for this)
— a never-ending, spiraling pattern in which the edges of the etching are also marked by
even more detailed etching.
• Hatch: Can only be opened from the outside (uh-oh).

Inside the Sphere: The inside of the Sphere is similarly etched, just like the outside.

The Ritual:
• The gantry is extended and a child is placed naked inside the Sphere.
• The Sphere is sealed, the gantry withdrawn, and the pressure door sealed, isolating the
chamber.
• The Sphere is electrically powered, reducing sacrificial victims to alchemically charged ash.
(This ash could be described as Tanit “spores,” although the analogy only goes so far.)

Left Hand of Mythos

56
• The cultists immediately process the ash into active Tophet serum using the facility onsite.
(This is time sensitive, as the “spores” can’t survive long without being preserved within
the serum.)

RACHEL HILL

APPEARANCE:
• Prop: Photo of Rachel Hill

ROLEPLAYING NOTES
• In a state of shock covered only by her excellent manners.
• Dabs at her eyes with a handkerchief.
• Weakness melts away if pushed around; then she wields her full strength as a millionaire’s
heiress.

BACKGROUND
• Grew up in New York.
• Had diptheria as a child.
• Married Egil Boeckmann, a University of Minnesota football hero (scored touchdown that
tied first “Little Brown Jug” game with Michigan) in 1913.
• Moved back into James J. Hill House when her mother became ill in 1919.
• Recently hired a photographer to take pictures of the property before it’s given to the
Archdiocese.

CLUES
• She did not drink, as she’s teetotaler.
• Gladys Roy left early. She had invited a friend – Alicia Corey – to the party.
• Reassurance 1 / Interrogation 1: She asked Gladys Roy to secure the alcohol for the
party (and brought it in the later afternoon). (She won’t admit this without reassurances
that she won’t get in trouble. Otherwise her story is that people brought their own booze.)

ROLEPLAYING NOTES
• Nervous around authority figures.
• Protective of members of the Hill family. Refers to them as Mr. Wallace, Ms. Rachel, etc.
• Gives a “look” to anyone she considers to be acting foolish.

BACKGROUND
• Her husband was a butler in the house. He died in a trolley accident in 1919. They had no
children.
• Has worked with the Hill family since 1911.
• Last servant working in the house (the rest were assisted into other positions or given
pensions after Mary T.’s death).

CLUES
• She sent the invitations out for Ms. Rachel’s party. (Has a list of addresses and could, for
example, give people contact information for Gladys Roy.)
• Gladys Roy brought the liquor (Minnesota 13) to the party at Rachel’s request. She
dropped it off on the back porch and Lucretia would run bottles up as people requested
more.
• Reassurance 1: As she was calling the police from the phone in the den, she saw something
crawling across the Terrace and disappearing into the darkness.

OLEG ANDERSSON
(BOOTLEGGER)

APPEARANCE:
• Prop: Photo of Oleg Andersson

ROLEPLAYING NOTES
• Smirks.
• Fidgets with his tie.
• Fronts as tough, but quick to backpedal in face of real threat.
• Voice goes nasal when he gets nervous.

BACKGROUND
• Born 1898 in Norway. His parents came to America and settled in St. Cloud when he was two years old.
• Came down to Minneapolis in 1921 looking for day labor work. Got tangled up in a robbery gang instead;
was out buying cigarettes when the rest of his crew got rolled up.
• He ran to his friend Dan to hide out until the heat died down. Dan was running booze and Andersson’s
connections up in Stearns County made him useful. Dan was killed a couple years ago in a drive-by.

CLUES
• He gets the Minnesota 13 Whiskey from the Davis Farm. (Billie Davis is the only bootlegger in Stearns
County with the expertise to fix the denatured ethanol Kid Cann hooked him up with.)
• He delivers denaturalized ethanol to the Davis’. He picks up the ethanol from a warehouse location. He
doesn’t know who drops it off — Kid Cann hooked him up with the connection and it all stays anonymous.
• Following Oleg: Following Oleg will eventually lead to the Davis’ Farm, where he drops off barrels of
chemicals from his truck and picks up crates filled with Minnesota 13.
• Oleg’s Address Book: Carried in his breast pocket. Contains addresses for his pick-ups with notations –
Davis Farm is marked as a place that he makes a special drop-off; and checking the noted dates it’s clear
Rachel’s whiskey came from the Davis Farm.

NOTES
• Drives a 1922 Ford Model TT truck

• Switching wings in mid-air.
• “Repairing” the wheel on the other airplane.
• Doing a handstand on the wing.

APPEARANCE:
• Prop: Photo of Gladys Roy

ROLEPLAYING NOTES
• Cool, confident, ironic and witty.
• Smokes.
• Quirks an eyebrow when amused.

BACKGROUND
• 23 years old.
• Started parachute jumping in 1921. Holds the world’s low record for parachute jump. (Has
also jumped from 17,000 feet.)
• A barnstormer who’s performed across Minnesota, also in Hollywood and across the
nation.
• Famous for dancing the Charleston and playing tennis on the upper wing of an airplane in
flight.
• Western Vaudeville Manager’s Association is her booking agent.
• She was injured filming The Fighting Ranger in Hollywood earlier this year when she was
thrown from a horse.

Left Hand of Mythos

61
CLUES
• She invited Alicia Corey to the party at James J. Hill House.
• She knows Rachel bought her whiskey from people associated with Kid Cann. (She
recognized the Juicy Fruit flavoring as Minnesota 13.)
• She bought the liquor for the party (Minnesota 13) from a bootlegger named Oleg
Andersson. She met with him a gin-joint called Pete’s on Hennepin Ave. just north of the
river.
• She wasn’t drinking at the party last night because she had the aerobatics show this
morning.
• Following Gladys: Gladys can be followed to Node 3: Fatima’s Shrine (she goes there after
the aerobatics show).

LEVERAGED CLUES (anything proving her membership in the Sisterhood of Fatima)

• Can basically fill in all the basic background on Tanit and Ra. (She was not, however,
indoctrinated in the inner mysteries of the Sisterhood of Fatima.)
• She knows that kids are being kidnapped by the Tanit cultists. (Alicia Corey told her.)
• She knows that the whiskey was tainted with Tanit parasites (although she didn’t know that
when she brought it).

NOTES
• Gladys’ Bag: Searching through her stuff will turn up a Hamsa charm similar to the one
Alicia Corey had at Hill House. (Can be used as leveraged clue.)

KID CANN
(ISADORE BLUMENFELD)

APPEARANCE
• Prop: Photo of Kid Cann

ROLEPLAYING NOTES
• Proud
• Prone to violence if threatened.
• Gestures with both hands

BACKGROUND
• A Jew born in 1900 in a Romanian shtetl, his parents emigrated to America in 1902.
• Left school as a kid to sell newspapers on Minneapolis’ “Newspaper Row”, where the best
locations were held by gangs of kids.
• Began running errands for pimps and whores in the red light district.
• Prohibition let him and his brothers expand their operations. Forged connections with the
Chicago Outfit (Al Capone) and New York’s Genovese crime family (Mafia).
• Oversees illegal distilleries in the forests near Fort Snelling, bootlegging operations,
prostitution, and labor racketeering.
• Cann insists his nickname is derived from his boxing days, but it’s rumored that he earned
it due to his tendency to hide in outhouses/bathrooms when shooting starts.

CLUES
• Hooked Oleg up with denatured alcohol from the Harris Chemical Plant. (He’s bribed
people in charge over there to “leave it unattended”; then it gets picked up and taken to a
warehouse. Oleg picks it up from there and takes it to his people in Stearns County. Cann
doesn’t know who he takes it to.)
• He can identify that Minnesota 13 from the party as one sold by Oleg Andersson.

ROLEPLAYING NOTES
• Weary; in body, spirit, and voice
• Clasps her hands and wrings them with very small movements
• Fervently protective of the children

BACKGROUND
• Grew up in Pennsylvania. Her father was a frequent pastor in a “programmed” branch of
Quakerism.
• She and her sister, Anna, became disillusioned with the program, believing fervently in the
non-hierarchical structures of the faith. This estranged them from their father.
• In 1905, they opened the asylum.
• Anna died of typhoid in 1913, the same year that Minneapolis finally acknowledged that
their municipal water was the source of the typhoid outbreaks and opened a water
purification plant to solve the problem.
• She intends for Perlie Coleman to take over the asylum.

CLUES
• Knows the names and dates of the missing kids. (Very angry about the police and press
being dismissive of it.)
• Can introduce PCs to Perlie Coleman and Marcus Washington.

• If all the investigators are white, she will be painstakingly polite until reassured that they
don’t pose a danger. (This deferential self-defense also means that the PCs won’t get
anything useful from her.)
• Always keeping one eye on the kids; will randomly shout out cautions to them or a kid
might run up and she’ll scoop them up.
• An incredibly warm smile if she trusts you.

BACKGROUND
• Perlie is an African Methodist Episcopalian.
• She grew up in Duluth.
• Her father was lynched by a white mob when she was seven years old. Her mother
immediately took Perlie and her three sisters and moved to Minneapolis.
• Her mother has gone mostly blind and can’t work any more. Perlie depends on her job
here at the asylum to support her.
• She is a caretaker and teacher for the children.

MARCUS WASHINGTON

APPEARANCE:

ROLEPLAYING NOTES
• Very protective of Hannah Glass and her reputation.
• Slow, powerful movements.
• A voice that sounds like a quiet river.

BACKGROUND
• An African Methodist Episcopalian.
• Began working for “the Missuses Glass” in 1906, so he’s been with the asylum almost from
the beginning.
• He lives in the Rondo neighborhood. He usually walks six blocks to work.
• He’s been staying at the asylum overnight since Frances Allen was taken, acting as a sort of
security guard to try to keep the kids safe. He’s incredibly angry with himself for not being
able to stop Alex Griffin from being taken. He feels like he’s failed the children and
Hannah.

CLUES
• Leveraged Clue: If the name “Harris Chemicals” is mentioned, he’ll say that there’s been
a Harris Chemicals truck parked in the neighborhood recently. (He doesn’t think it’s
significant and hasn’t connected it to the kidnappings, which is why he doesn’t mention it
otherwise.)

ROLEPLAYING NOTES
• Witty and uncouth.
• Big grin.
• Thumbs through her suspenders.

BACKGROUND
• She’s the brains of the operation. The only bootlegger in Stearns County who can deal with
the denatured alcohol Oleg gets from the Harris Chemical Plant.
• Went to college, but had to come back home when her mom got sick. Ended up marrying
“that big goof” Billie and settled down to the happy life of a farm wife.
• Got into bootlegging because it seemed like everybody else in Stearns County was doing it,
and with the chemistry courses she took in college she’s got a knack for it.

CLUE
• Reassurance: She knows the source of Oleg’s denatured ethanol is from the Harris
Chemical Plant. (Label coding on the bottom of the barrels.)
• Reassurance: They sell their Minnesota 13 through Oleg Andersson (who runs it into
Minneapolis and St. Paul).

NOTES
• Ellie Davis is inspired by the story told by Elaine Davis of her grandmother, a central
Minnesota farm wife during Prohibition, who leapt into bed and pretended to be sick when
a bunch of G-men spilled out of their cars into the front yard. She delayed ‘em long enough
for her husband to make sure the kegs were safely stowed under the hay mounds in the

JOHN BARCA

APPEARANCE
• Prop: Photo of John Barca

ROLEPLAYING NOTES
• Behind a thin veneer of sanity is an obsessed lunatic under the thrall of Tanit.
• Convinced he’s doing the best thing for all.
• Obsessive, confident, dismissive.

BACKGROUND
• Barca is a Yale graduate (and member of Skull & Bones). (It’s an open question whether or not he
was infected at Yale or at some later date. If at Yale, it seems likely that all of Skull & Bones is
Tanit-infested.)
• He was appointed by President Warren Harding to serve on the Federal Reserve Board in
Washington in May 1921.
• In May 1923, he resigned to return briefly to private business in St. Paul. Within a few months,
however, he was appointed to a joint leadership role at the Minneapolis Federal Reserve.
• He’s the second chairman of the Mineapolis Federal Reserve, advancing into the position after the
death of John Rich last year.
