There are two types of reference signals defined for the LTE uplink…
x Uplink demodulation reference signals (DM-RS) are intended to be used by the base station for channel
estimation for coherent demodulation of the uplink channels (PUSCH & PUCCH).
x Uplink sounding reference signals (SRS) are intended to be used by the base station for channel estimation to
support uplink channel-dependent scheduling and link adaptation.

There are two types of SRS transmission defined for the LTE uplink…
x Periodic SRS transmission, which has been available from the first release of LTE (Release 8).
x Aperiodic SRS transmission, introduced in LTE Release 10, triggered by signaling on PDCCH as part of the
scheduling grant.

Location and frequency of SRS transmissions

Frequency domain - Start RB and number of RBs used for SRS transmission is given by the two parameters…
x SRS bandwidth configuration (SIB2)
x SRS bandwidth (RRC message)
Refer to Table 5.5.3.2-2 (3GPP 36.211) for UL BW 50 RBs.

Time domain - SRS transmission in time domain is given by srs-ConfigIndex (RRC message)
Refer to Table 8.2-1 (3GPP 36.213) which gives the periodicity and sub-frame offset.

Sounding reference signal is also defined as a frequency-domain reference-signal sequence derived as a cyclic
extension of prime-length Zadoff–Chu sequences. However, in the case of SRS, the reference-signal sequence is
mapped to every second subcarrier, creating a “comb”-like spectrum.

Bandwidth of the SRS transmission is always a multiple of four resource blocks, the lengths of the reference-signal
sequences for SRS are thus always a multiple of 24. The reference-signal sequence to use for SRS transmission within
the cell is taken from the same sequence group as the demodulation reference signals used for channel estimation
for PUCCH.

To avoid collision between SRS and PUSCH transmissions from different UE, UE should avoid PUSCH transmission in
the OFDM symbols in which SRS transmission may occur. To achieve this, all UE within a cell are aware of the set of

subframes within which SRS may be transmitted by any terminal within the cell. All terminals should then avoid
PUSCH transmission in the last OFDM symbol of those subframes. Information about the set of subframes in which
SRS may be transmitted within a cell is provided as part of the cell system information.

srs-SubframeConfig ENUMERATED { sc0, …, sc6, sc15}

UE sends SRS in the sub-frame numbers as per srs-SubframeConfig.

Refer to Table 5.5.3.3-1 (3GPP 36.211).

SRS Multiplexing

Different phase rotations (for SRS, typically referred to as “cyclic shifts”) can be used to generate different SRS that
are orthogonal to each other. Multiple SRS can thus be transmitted in parallel in the same subframe by configuring
UEs in different cyclic shift cs.

cyclicShift ENUMERATED {cs0, cs1, cs2, cs3, cs4, cs5, cs6, cs7}

Another way to allow for SRS to be simultaneously transmitted from different terminals is to rely on the fact that
each SRS only occupies every second subcarrier. Thus, SRS transmissions from two terminals can be frequency-
multiplexed by assigning them to different frequency shifts or “combs”.

transmissionComb INTEGER (0..1)

If SRS & CQI clash on same TTI, then UE shall not transmit SRS, i.e. whenever SRS and PUCCH format 2/2a/2b
transmissions happen to coincide in the same subframe.

Shortened PUCCH (reserve last symbols for SRS transmission) is allowed for PUCCH format1/1a/1b if the parameter
ackNackSRS-SimultaneousTransmission is TRUE.

UE will not send SRS when dedicated SRS configuration is not received. But the important thing is that it will do DTX
(not send anything) for the block reserved for SRS (given in common configuration). This can also be seen in
spectrum analyser.

Power Control for SRS

The SRS transmit power basically follows that of the PUSCH, compensating for the exact bandwidth of the SRS
transmission with an additional power offset.

Example…

SIB2:
soundingRS-UL-ConfigCommon setup :
{
srs-BandwidthConfig bw0,
srs-SubframeConfig sc0,
ackNackSRS-SimultaneousTransmission TRUE
}

RRC Conn Setup:

soundingRS-UL-ConfigDedicated setup :
{
srs-Bandwidth bw0,
srs-HoppingBandwidth hbw0,
freqDomainPosition 0,
duration TRUE,
srs-ConfigIndex 5,
transmissionComb 0,
cyclicShift cs0
}
From above configuration,
Here Start RB, A, RB1 (start RB) to RB48 (number of RBs) - SRS sent for 48 PRB in subframe 3 and 8.

Following UE logs give information about SRS transmission…

SRS Transmission in TDD

SRS transmission is similar in TDD and FDD. Sounding reference signal is transmitted only in configured UL subframes
or UpPTS. When one SC-FDMA symbol exists in UpPTS, it can be used for SRS transmission. When two SC-FDMA
symbols exist in UpPTS, both can be used for SRS transmission and both can be assigned to the same UE or different
UE.

A UE shall not transmit SRS whenever SRS and PUCCH format 2/2a/2b transmissions coincide in the same subframe.

A UE shall not transmit SRS whenever SRS transmission and PUCCH transmission carrying ACK/NACK and/or
positive SR happen to coincide in the same subframe if the parameter simultaneous-AN-and-SRS is FALSE.

A UE shall transmit SRS whenever SRS transmission and PUCCH transmission carrying ACK/NACK and/or positive SR
happen to coincide in the same subframe if the parameter simultaneous-AN-and-SRS is TRUE.

In UpPTS, whenever SRS transmission instance overlaps with the PRACH region for preamble format 4 or exceeds the
range of uplink system bandwidth configured in the cell, the UE shall not transmit SRS.

srs-MaxUpPTS true is RRC IE specific for TDD only. Its function is to reconfigure UE to send SRS for entire UL
Bandwidth in special sub frame. As no PUCCH region in UpPTS, larger SRS bandwidth can be configured than that in
normal sub frame. It is the largest SRS value (excluding Format 4 RACH BW) in RBs that is a multiple of 3, 4, and 5 in
order to reuse the existing UL DM RS sequences, i.e.

where NRB is the number of RBs in the system bandwidth and NRA is the number of format 4 PRACH on the UpPTS.

SRS transmission instances for TDD with TSRS>2 and for FDD subframes satisfying (10Nf + ksrs - Toffset) × mod
(TSRS) where Nf is the system frame number. For FDD ksrs = {0, 1, …, 9} is the subframe index within the frame.

For TDD ksrs is defined in Table 8.2-3 of 36.213. SRS transmission instances for TDD with TSRS=2 are subframes
satisfying (ksrs- Toffset) × mod 5 = 0.
