The covering letter can be as important as the CV in that it often provides the first direct
contact between a candidate and an employee. If this letter is not well written and
presented, it will make a poor impression. The covering letter normally contains four
paragraphs in which you should:

● confirm that you wish to apply and say where you learned about the job.
● say why you are interested in the position and relate your interests to those of the
company.
● show you can contribute to the job by highlighting your most relevant skills and
experience.
● indicate your willingness to attend an interview (and possibly say when you would be
free to attend).

* Remember the clues for writing a COVER OR COVERING LETTER:

1. Find out what the employer is looking for (e.g a certain amount of experience, languages, etc.)
2. Show that you have all the qualities, qualifications, and experience.
3. Do not simply repeat all the information in the CV or résumé: HIGHLIGHT the most important
parts.
4. It should be neatly typed on paper that matches the style and color of your résumé.
5. Structure: People read letters quickly. Therefore, get to the point in the first paragraph or in
the first sentence, if possible. Skip a line between paragraphs. It is usual not to indent
paragraphs. Sentences should average less than twenty words, and paragraphs should
average less than seven lines.
6. Mr./Mrs./Ms./Dr. etc = Dear Mr…. = Yours sincerely. Dear Sir or Madam = Yours faithfully
