Chapter I
Introduction

Despite being a nation rich in natural resources (especially diamonds) Sierra

Leone is also one of the poorest and most corrupt countries around the world
where war is affecting the welfare of all its citizens.

Sierra Leone is a country located in the African western coast, it counts with
many natural resources, between them diamonds, gold, platinum, iron, and
other minerals. Despite the value of the diamonds, the income of Sierra Leone´s
is extremely low. Its situation is very alarming, many people have died, and all
of this is because of a corrupt government that had taken them to civil war.

In spite of its wealth Sierra Leone is still a poor country where war has killed
thousands of people bringing nothing but poverty, corruption and misfortune to
the citizens of this nation.

Chapter II
Background

Sierra Leone is a country located on the south coast of West Africa, it is bordered by
Liberia and Guinea, its total area is 71.740km2. Sierra Leone was independent by
Britain in 1961, and Milton Margai was the first prime minister who created the Sierra
Leone People’s Party, which is based on a parliamentary system. The Sierra Leone
government system is based in a presidential republic. Its economy has been declining
since 1990, because of a corrupt government, the success of Sierra Leone's economy
depends on the efforts to limit corruption.

Chapter I

Background

Once known as a slave traffic center, this West African nation got its

independence from UK in 1961 becoming an independent democratic country in

1991; however, the corruption this country has had affects the welfare of the

entire nation immersing them in terrible living conditions despite the multiple

natural resources they have (especially diamonds). This nation is bordered by

Guinea to the north, Liberia to the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the

southwest. Taking advantage of its close proximity to the sea, Sierra Leone was

used in early as the mid-fifteenth century by Portuguese sailors to obtain goods

before they start using the nation for the slave trade along other European

countries .After this regrettable fact, This nation gained its independence from

the United Kingdom on April 27th  of  1961. For around 30 years before they

became an independent democratic country, Joseph Saidu Momoh ruled the

country after the abolition of the British parliament in an inaccurate way where

corruption led the country decreasing the economy of the country in such a

terrible way. Sierra Leone became a democracy on April 27 of 1961 after they

cross political pressures and violence by the state. Joseph Saidu Momoh

implemented a multiparty democracy and created Sierra Leone´s constitution.

People's life expectancy in Sierra Leone is 56 years, with only this value it can

say all the bad things behind it. Despite being a country full of natural

resources, it has a bad government. The bad management by the government

has generated that a 70 percent of the population lives in poverty. Many citizens

are bored of this situation, they entered into a civil war, they have protested, but

this only brings death and despair to them.

Final Exam

You need to write your personal reflection regarding the research we have
been developing along this term. You need to express the learning you have
got based on the research experience as well as how your perspective
about this topic has changed along the term. Finally, it is necessary to
compare the main problems as well as their reasons with our country
situation analyzing their similarities and differences.

Despite being a country full of natural resources, Sierra Leone is one of the
poorest countries around the world, its corruption is to high that it had let a civil
war. Corruption is one of the biggest problems that the world has, it involves
many countries and brings hopeless to citizens. In my opinion Sierra Leone´s
situation is terrible, corruption has been affecting citizens since 1990, they had
tried to make a solution, but it led them to a civil war. Citizens had lost hope,
they are bored and tired of the situation. Fortunately, popular organizations are
helping them, they are fighting for reaching equality. Colombia’s situation can
be similar, but thanks god poverty rates are not similar to Sierra Leones one.
Corruption had also affected Colombia, hope has been lost from citizens, they
do not believe in their government. Someday a solution will come true,
corruption will be less, and citizens will have the life they were expecting for.
