Subject: A second year BS Architecture student
Time observed: 1:30 p.m.

After stepping into the Activity Center, I immediately noticed a girl wearing a white t-shirt
top, wide leg jeans, and pastel colored shoes with a purple hair clip. Loose strands from her hair
were beginning to escape from the clip. It became apparent that the girl was practicing volleyball
for physical education class. It took me only a single glance of her and resolved she would be
my observed subject.

Upon observation, I noticed that her focus on practicing was clearly visible. To be
honest, her skills in handling the ball need improving; however, her gaze followed the ball's path
determinedly. The passion to learn was very evident and it seemed to me that she is the kind of
person who never gives up even when faced with difficulty or adversity. From where I sat
watching, she conveyed great determination but at the same time remained composed and
calm even when facing any failure. Anytime she failed to keep up with the ball, she would
neither rage nor become frustrated, instead masking any emotions with a small smile or simply
just picking up the ball again silently. She appears not to be discouraged.

As she took her break from practicing, she searched for her bag and retrieved a water
bottle of purple color. It may have been a coincidence that the color purple seemed to coincide
with her preferences, as indicated by the purple hair clip adorning her hair and even the water
bottle she was drinking from; however, from my own point-of-view I firmly believe it is simply due
to her admiration of the color purple.

Her composure displayed gentleness in all movements: the way which she would pick
up the ball off the ground ever so delicately; when tired she would put both hands upon her
waist in relaxation; her running also viewed with serenity; and when speaking to classmates-- all
actions coupled with finesse. No other words can be suited to describe it other than being
gentle.

Having been observing her for an hour, I approached her in order to debrief her
regarding my observations. Surprisingly, she did not respond with the shock or horror that I had
anticipated; rather, she was almost nonchalant and composed. Furthermore, when asked if it
was alright to choose her as my subject for observance, she agreed without hesitation. She
offered personal information freely: She is a second year student from the College of
Engineering and Architecture pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Science in Architecture. In order
to maintain confidentiality, I have chosen not to mention her name.

Subject: A balloon seller
Time observed: 2:00 p.m.

I made my way to the plaza close to the Cathedral and found a bench to sit on. My gaze
roamed throughout the place and focused on a balloon vendor dressed in all black attire - long
sleeves, trousers with red accents along the sides, and black shoes - despite the extreme heat.
His clothing seemed to contrast with the bright colors of the balloons he was bearing,
consequently garnering my attention. That being so, I remained on the bench and continued to
observe him.

It was evident that he was not offering the balloons for free but that he was selling them.
He paced around the plaza in an attempt to capture the attention of nearby children, as balloons
are typically marketed towards youngsters. He seemed almost uncivil and pessimistic. It felt
rather surreal watching him walking with such dark aura while at the same time trying to market
colorful balloons. I think this line of work was not the right one for him, as his demeanor seemed
more suited to frightening away any possible customers than encouraging them to buy.

However, upon his approach to a child with her parents, a shift in the atmosphere and
expression was facially evident. He lowered himself to the same height as the baby girl and
began to converse with her in a friendly, relaxed manner – very opposite to his earlier behavior.
A wide, genuine smile spread across his face, appearing so authentic that it even seemed he
was no longer the same person I saw before. This change in composure insinuated that he is
the type of character who only charitably interacts with individuals he deem profitable; masking
his true self with a veil of pretence. He is surprisingly intriguing. After successfully selling a
balloon to the baby girl, his uncivil demeanor swiftly returned and cycled through every
customer alike over the long hours I spent observing him.

Having decided that I observed him enough, I encouraged myself to stand up and
inquire about his personal information. I offered a greeting and informed him of my observation,
and I braced myself for being ignored, however, this did not happened. Instead he smiled and
started giving his information. I had anticipated that he might be taken aback, but he displayed
nothing but composure. I felt a great sense of relief that he did not disregard me impolitely.
