2 Weighted Mean
Sometimes, you must find the mean of a data set in which not all
values are equally represented. Consider the case of finding the average
cost of a gallon of gasoline for three taxis.
Suppose a driver buys gasoline at three different service stations at
a cost of Php43.50, Php44, and Php45 at 4 litres, 6 litres, and 8 litres,
respectively. To find the average cost, we have to consider the number of
liters the driver used. The type of mean that considers this factor is called
weighted mean.
Weighted Mean is an average computed by giving different weights
to some of the individual values. If all the weights are equal, then the
weighted mean is the same as the arithmetic mean.
