Chapter 1

The Problem

Introduction

“Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master”

-Christian Lous Lange

Social Media is a form of electronic communication through which users

create online communities to share information, ideas and personal messages. It is a
phrase that we throw around a lot these days, often to describe what we post on sites
and apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and others.

Today’s World is a Global village. Everyone is connected to one another in this

vast network generated by the internet. As said by Marshall McLuhan, a philosopher of
communication theory, “The new electronic independence recreates the world in the
image of Global Village” Social Media is inherently dependent upon the internet. It
illuminates the lives of people by spreading knowledge internationally, thereby making
us Global citizens.

Social Media provides the student the freedom to do whatever they want. They
like to make new friends, and comments of the lives of different people. Students can
create other online identities that the real world does not allow. Social media has a
darker side that will gain the attention of many parents, and even eminent
psychologists. Students neglect their studies by spending time on social media rather
than studying or interacting with people in person.

According to Deng and Tavares (2003) noted that social networking have
become an integral part of our children’s social life; it is now seen as a learning platform
that could be utilize to enhance student engagement and performance. But a number of
researchers also found the negative effect that social media has on students’ academic
performance.

According to Malaney (2005) found that some student in multiple studies in

2000 reported that their grades have suffer as a result of too much time spent on social
media.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of Social Media and
its’ effect to the academic performance of the grade 12 students. Thus the researchers
will encourage to study and determine Social Media and Its effect to the academic
performance of the grade 12 students.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework of this study was illustrated in a schematic diagram

that shows how Social media affects the Grade-12 students.

SOCIAL MEDIA

SOCIAL

Its effect to the academic performance

Figure 1. The Conceptual Framework of the study.

As shown in the figure 1. This study used descriptive method to find out how
Social media effect to the academic performance of the grade 12 students. The
following indicators of this study include the Behavioral, Mental and Social factors which
determine how Social media effects to the student’s academic performance.

This study aims to determine the effectiveness on how students engage in Social
media and enhance their knowledge particularly with their academic performance.

Thus, the students should practice and learn on how to manage their Academic
performance in Social Media; it’s because, Social Media is not a bad influence, but the
students should have courage in practicing on how to manage their performance.

Statement of the Problem

This study was assessed on how Social Media; Its effect to the Academic
performance of the grade 12 students of Pagadian Capitol College, school year 2018-
2019.

Specifically, this study will seek answers to the following queries:

1. How does the Social Media will affect the Academic Performance of the Grade
twelve students of Pagadian Capitol College?
1.1 Behavioral Factor
1.2 Mental Factor
1.3 Social Factor
2. Is there a significant effects in Social media and the Academic Performance of
the Grade 12 students in Pagadian Capitol College?

Theory

The Qualitative research approach, interpret and analyze inductively by the

researchers using the Grounded Theory.
Significance of the study

The purpose of this research is to investigate if the use of this study would help
them know the proper usage of social media. The results of the study indicate that the
students experience good conduct of social media after they had been taught on how to
manage, by means of affective strategies. Social Media is a good problem solver but we
must know our limit to be able to make it as a good influence towards students.

Students: The result of the study would serve as a guide for the students on
Social media in relation on how to manage Social media.

Teacher: These individuals would come to know that Social media; would
help to improve the knowledge of the student, at the same
time enhance the student’s skills in terms of academic
performance.

Other Researchers: This group will use in the reason of this study as the stepping
stone in conducting similar or related studies in other
environment and model for any investigation that would made an
attempt to measure the academic performance of the students
in social media.

Scope and Limitations

The importance of the study was the capacity to determine the outcome of social
media and its effect to the academic performance of the grade 12 students. The study
will focus on Social media since this was the most common problem among the Grade
12 students.

The result of this study was project to contribute to the greater body of
knowledge in the field of education in terms of social media and its effect to the
academic performance of the grade 12 students.

Research Topic: The study treated one variable namely Social media.
Subject Matter: This study measured the academic performance that will affect
social media.

Time and Place: This study was conducted in Pagadian Capitol College
located in Tuburan District, Pagadian City during the
school year of 2018- 2019.

Review of Related Literature and studies

This chapter represents the literature and studies which have similar
connection to the research presently conducted.

The researchers make observations and apply extra effort in gathering related
literature by using survey which contains relevant information to improve the study.

Related Literature

Social Media

In the present study, Deng and Tavares (2013) noted that social media have
become an integral part of our social life; it is now seen as a learning platform that could
be utilize to enhance student engagement and performance. Social media tools offer
school children the opportunity to communicate, get in touch, access information,
research and chat.

-According to Deng and Tavares (2013) Social Media is important to our social
life, because it allows people to be connected with everyone around them.

A number of researchers have found a negative effect that social network

participation has on students’ academic performance. Malaney (2005) found that some
students in multiple studies in 2000 and 2003 reported that their grades had suffered as
a result of too much spent on social media.

-According to Malaney (2005) the Academic Grades of the students are much
more affected when they spent too much time on social media.

Maxwell Barna (2018) that the internet has given us something extraordinary. At the
touch of a button, we can know where the nearest bars and restaurants are. We have
the answers to all the questions we could ever ask in the palms of our hands but is it
possible that these incredible inventions are actually harming our personal development
and stunting our social growths?

-According to Maxwell Barna (2018) we can easily access the nearby location
that people wants to go and get the information people wants to know.

Through social media can increase student learning through student interactions,
challenges arise when social media are incorporated into an academic course. The
assumption that students are familiar with and agreeable to using certain types of social
media can cause educators to inadvertently fail to provide the resources or
encouragement necessary to support student usage and learning Cole (2009) Valjataga
& Fiedler (2009).

-According to Valjataga & Fiedler (2009) the Educators don’t have to give all the
informations to the students since the students can acquire knowledge through the
usage of social media.

BEHAVIORAL FACTOR. According to Jordan Kasteler (2010), we all know that

everyone is a product of their environment. Circumstantial life events, influences, and
surroundings can further change our behavior. Social media already highly influences
our shopping, relationships, and education. But how large of a role does networking
through social media play into our lives? Maybe more than any of us realize. Social
networks are often designed to be widely accessible, many attract homogeneous
populations initially, so it is not uncommon to find groups using sites to segregate
themselves by nationality, age, educational level, or other factors that typically segment
society, even if that was not the intention of the developers. We like to think that we are
largely in control of our day-to-day lives, yet most of what we do, from what we eat to
who we sleep with, and even the way we feel, is significantly influenced by those around
us’ and those around them, and those around them. Our actions can change the
behaviors, the beliefs, and even the basic health of people we’ve never met. Social
networks can harbor a flow of generally undesirable things such as anger, sadness, and
unhappiness that can result to the way the person acts and behave, but good things
also flow like happiness, love, altruism, and valuable information. “It is the spread of the
good things that vindicates the whole reason we live our lives in networks,” Christakis
says. “If I was always violent to you …you would cut the ties to me and the network
would disintegrate. In a deep and fundamental way, networks are connected to
goodness, and goodness is required for networks to emerge and spread.”

Social Influences on Behavior There are many social influences which have an
effect or lasting effect on the behavior of an individual. Within many group scenarios,
conformity and obedience play a large role in how people tend to think and behave,
especially if they get carried away. Obedience refers to compliance to an authority
figure or with others in a group. On the other hand, conformity refers to an individual
changing their thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors to accommodate with the standards.

-According to Jordan Kasteler (2010) social media can also change the mood of
every student, on how the students react in a particular situation.

MENTAL FACTOR. Teenagers can use social media to find community, but their
mental health is often negatively affected by this culture of comparison. According to
Katie Hurley, LCSW (2010), the verdict is still out on whether social media is damaging
to the mental health of teens. This is in part due to the lack of research. Some studies
show that online connections with small groups of people can be beneficial to teens,
while other research points to a rise in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and eating
disorders.

The other reason it’s difficult to get a good read on the issue is that social
media is constantly changing and evolving. Plus, no long-term studies have been
completed. So, we’re left making educated guesses based on current research. There’s
just not enough data to back up the potential long-term pros and cons of living on
“likes”. One study out of the University of Pittsburgh, for example, found a correlation
between times spent scrolling through social media apps and negative body image
feedback. Those who had spent more time on social media had 2.2 times the risk of
reporting eating and body image concerns, compared to their peers who spent less time
on social media. The participants who spent the most time on social media had 2.6
times the risk.1
Results from a separate study from the University Of Pittsburgh School Of
Medicine showed that the more time young adults spent on social media, the more likely
they were to have problems sleeping and report symptoms of depression.

-According to Katie Hurley (2010) that social media can increase teenager’s risk
of depression, anxiety, mental problems and eating disorder due to the time spent in
social media.

Courtney B. (2017) Engaging in negative behaviors and accepting risky social media
challenges.

Cyberbullying: Teens girls in particular are at risk of cyberbullying through use of social
media, but teen boys are not immune. Cyberbullying is associated with depression,
anxiety, and an elevated risk of suicidal thoughts.

Making comparisons: Though many teens know that their peers share only their
highlight reels on social media, it’s very difficult to avoid making comparisons.
Everything from physical appearance to life circumstances to perceived successes and
failures are under a microscope on social media.

Having many fake friends: Even with privacy settings in place, teens can collect
thousands of friends on social media. The more people on the friend list, the more
people have access to screenshot photos, Snaps, and updates and use them for other
purposes. There is no privacy on social media.

Less face time: Social interaction skills require daily practice, even for teens. It’s
difficult to build empathy and compassion (our best weapons in the war on bullying)
when teens spend more time “engaging” online than they do in person. Human
connection is a powerful tool and builds skills that last a lifetime.

There’s a happy medium in here somewhere. The key to helping teens learn to
balance social media with real life friendships is to keep the lines of communication
open and keep talking. Honest communication shows your teen that you are there to
support, not to judge or lecture. It’s also important to walk the walk. Disconnect on
weekends and show your teen that there is a whole world out there that doesn’t require
a handheld screen. She may miss her phone a lot less than she thinks she will and this
is a very good lesson to learn.

-According to Courtney B. (2017) through social media people can create fake
friends or fake relationships, cyberbullying that can lead a particular person into
depression and suicidal thoughts, and plagiarism.

SOCIAL FACTOR. According to Bartleby (2016), as the world changes so rapidly, so

have the ways we communicate. Technology now plays an enormous part of how we
converse and socialize as a culture. As we continue to progress as a civilization, it is
significant to preserve the basic principles of socialization. Socialization helps us
acquire necessary habits, beliefs and knowledge of society from our environment
through home, school, community and the legal system. The development of these
social skills begins in infancy to adulthood for the purpose of functioning in society.
Values, norms and culture are essential for society’s survival. Roles and standards give
groups within a society structure and allow members to know what’s expected of them,
socially. A crucial role in socialization and provides a platform in building relationships.
As socialization attempts to shape society, social networking attempts to dictate the way
we interpret norms, beliefs and culture. Socialization and social networking are deeply
rooted in human psychology as both rely on aspects of a humanistic approach to affect
its core audience. Identifying changes in culture as a direct result of social networking
will provide validation that its influences on socialization exist.

-According to Bartleby (2016) social media can help people in building good
relationship, it can also be use in sharing other beliefs, norms, and culture.

Therefore, the researchers conclude that Social Media is crucial and useful to
our life, but there are negative sides and effect of too much time spend on social media
that might ruin the Academic Performance of the students in terms of Behavior, Mental,
and Social.
Related Studies

Lin et al (2013) as a student’s age increases, the frequency of off-topic

discussions also increase. This indicates that while social media may encourage
broader discussions of course content older students may spend more time than
younger students engaging in unrelated discussions.

-According to Lin et al (2013) as the student’s age increases, older students

apply social media in self purposes.

Hurt et al., (2012) Patera et al (2008), another reason for this may be that students
who spend more time on social media may have difficulty balancing their online
activities and their academic preparation.

-According to Hurt et al. (2012) in this statement students who spend more time
on social media will have difficulty of balancing the academic performance and social
life of the students.

Karpinski (2009) stated that social media has a negative association with students’
academic performance which is much greater than the advantages derived through the
use of social media platforms. People around the World have been addicted to the
internet which has given rise to more students using social media more often than
before.

-According to Karpinsi (2009) in this generation People have been more addicted
to social media than before.

Therefore the researchers conclude that the disadvantages of Social media are
much greater and bigger than the advantages of Social media. People nowadays are
much more addicted to social media that they come to forget their individual
responsibility and obligations in life.
CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODS

This chapter presented the research methodology of the study. It includes the
discussion on the research design and research methods covered the research
environment, research subjects, sampling techniques, instrumentation, and data
gathering techniques.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The descriptive type of research was used in this study, with survey as method
generated the data for the Effect of Social Media and a checklist on generating the
Academic Performance.

Johnson and Christensen (2002), support the research design use in this
investigation by saying the studies that primarily are descriptive in nature is in the field
of tests and measurement instruments. Test developers are consistently refining tests
and other test instruments, and they base many on their decisions on validity and
reliability coefficient. Base on this descriptive information, researchers establish
evidence how will their tests operate with different kinds of subject under a variety of
circumstances.

The prime purpose of descriptive research is to provide an accurate

description or picture of the statuses or characteristics of a situation or phenomenon.
The focus then is not ferret out cause and effect relationships, which this study
undertook, but rather describing the variables that exist among the variables (Olita,
2013).
RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

This study was conducted at Pagadian Capitol College, which started its full
operation in the School Year 2018-2019. The school started on May 25, 1992 by the
name Zamboanga Technological and Science Institute, a non-stock corporation. The
corporation adapted the name Pagadian College of Criminology and Science on
February 27, 1997. The corporation was converted to a stocks corporation on
September 24, 2004 and its present name, Pagadian Capitol College was finally
adapted.

In 1994, the corporation was given permission to open BS Criminology and

Automotive Technology. Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws were opened in 1997
and 2001 respectively. Education, Commerce, and Computer Studies followed right
after. The earlier than PCC, in 2006 would aim of contributing to the development of
basic education. It started with only 147 students – 65 in Grade school and 82 in high
school. Enrollment figure reached 400 in 2014. At present, PCC has all the manpower
and facilities needed for basic education which makes it one of the leaders in quality
education.

The school seal was a symbol of the school’s ideals that every student should
embody. In the middle of the seal is 1993, the year when the corporation was officially
founded. The seal was in shape of the circle, representing the continuous change that
the institution undergoes to respond to the needs of the time. The circle also
represented the circle of support that surrounds in the form of parents, students and
other partners.

The School Vision, Pagadian Capitol College is a leading institution that

produces highly competent and skilled graduates imbued with moral values to become
responsible members of the society. The school Mission, Pagadian Capitol College is
committed to provide a world-class Instruction and state of the art facilities through,
highly qualified and competent instructors, modern laboratory facilities, safe and
nurturing learning environment and supportive administrators and stake holders. The
institution greatly values compassion, Humility, Excellence, Responsibility, Industry,
Service, and Honesty.

Research Participants

The research participants for this study were the grade twelve students of
Pagadian Capitol College. The students answered the instruments on Social Media and
its following indicators. The student was subject to sampling process, to identify the
actual student respondents who would answer the instruments.

The population of the research subject in Pagadian Capitol College is entered in

table 1.

Table 1

The Research Subjects of the Study

Grade twelve Population Sample Group

Students 36 27

Sampling Techniques

The sampling technique used in this study was the purposive sampling,
specifically the simple random, with the lottery as the procedure employed in identifying
the actual student’s respondents. The sampling design 75 percent was applied in one
section to get the total of 27 student respondents.
Small pieces of paper buried the students name would be placed in the box.
The researchers drew the pieces of papers from the box until the desired number if
respondents would reach. The students whose names are drawn from the box became
the respondents.

Research Instruments

The instruments that were used in data gathering were the validated survey
questionnaire. Check list were subdivided into three parts. The research collected and
read several references such as books, unpublished materials, approved these and
other related information necessary in constructing reliable and valid instrument. The
hypothetical mean range which used in interpreting the data were as follows: 1-
NEVER, 2- RARELY, 3- SOMETIMES, 4- ALWAYS. This instrument is standardized
and will be accomplish by the grade twelve students of Pagadian Capitol College, Inc.

Data Gathering Techniques

The data gathering technique of this study involved the following activities which
generated the necessary data on the two variables treated: securing a permit from the
school principal of Pagadian Capitol College, INC. to conduct the study in the proposed
environment to administer questionnaires to the grade twelve students; contacting the
students in Social Media; Its effect to the Academic Performance

After the instrument was fully accomplished by the respondents, each will
retrieved immediately. Then assembling and collation of the data followed. The result of
these activities was exhibited in the next chapter.
Chapter 4
