Schizophrenia
ILO one:
 How are the various psychopathological signs and symptoms mentioned in the Case
reported in the Hx and mental state examination?
 What is meant by “content of thought”? Which disorders of thought content are there?
ILO two:
 Many people with psychotic disorders have cognitive and negative symptoms. Which
cognitive and negative symptoms can be recognized in psychoses? and how can they be
distinguished from depressive symptoms and side effects of medication?
ILO three:
 Describe the clinical features of the main forms of psychotic disorders and discuss the
differences.
ILO four:
 Describe the differential diagnosis in psychotic disorders (somatic disorders; use
of/intoxication with/withdrawal from psychoactive agents; personality disorders,
delirium, mood disorder).
ILO five:
Neurobiology Of Psychotic Disorders
 (the cortical hypodopaminergic state and the striatal hyperdopaminergic state); and the
expansion of the dopamine hypothesis to include the glutamate hypothesis –
based on dysfunctional NMDA receptors on GABA interneurons in the prefrontal
cortex)).
ILO six:
 Describe the mechanism of action of typical (classical/conventional or 1st generation)
and atypical (2nd generation) antipsychotics. And the difference between them.
ILO seven:
 Describe the extrapyramidal (motor), cardio-metabolic and sedative side effects of
antipsychotics in conjunction with the underlying neurotransmitter system.
ILO eight:
 Describe the non-pharmacological treatment options for psychotic disorders (cognitive
therapy, social interventions: at work, at home, daily activities).
