(Sidumo is the main character in this short story. He is a teenage boy who lives with
his mom. He is rude is disrespectful. His grandfather left and went to Johannesburg
when he was still young. Now he stays with his mom in Durban)

(Bhatomu Ngobese is an old businessman in Johannesburg. He went there due to
certain circumstances of life. He was attacked by some thugs at night on his way to
Durban to see his grandson which he last saw him when he was very young. He had
sold all of his businesses and had documents that his grandson needs to sign
because that his inheritance. He can not remember him very well but he remembers
that his name is Sidumo).
Umama kaSidumo

• Uthanda ukulalela izindaba ezisamidlalo emsakazweni. Lokho kumusize ukuthi
ezwe ngekhehla elingumkhulu kaSidumo elisesibhedlela.
• Ungumama onothando lwamfana wakhe ngisho engaziphathe kahle.
(Sidumo’s mother is a widow and a mother of a gangster. She loves listening to the
radio, it is there where she heard about the old man in hospital looking for his
grandson. She is a loving mother).

UDokotela
• Ungumuntu wokuqala uBhatomu amtshela ngomzukulu wakhe.
• Unekeza ikhehla ithemba lokuthi lizolulama ngoba kusale kancane ukuthi
amanxeba aginyelele enhlizweni.
• Nguye ihlele ukuthi ikhehla lithole usonhlalakahle ozosebenza udaba lwefa.
(The doctor was the first person that Bhatomu told the doctor about his grandson.
The doctor gave him hope that he will live because his wounds did not affect his
heart. The doctor was the one who organized everything and contacted the
social worker.)

Iphoyisa

• Kungenzeka ukuthi yilo iphoyisa eligcine ngokubopha uSidumo emva kokuthi

(The policeman is being portrayed as someone who is the eye of the law when it comes
to signing the papers. We find that he is there in the hospital too alongside Sidumo. He
might be the one who arrests Sidumo after the old man identifies as one of the thugs
who mugged him last night).

ISIFUNDO
• Kubalulekile ukugwema abangani ababi. Ngoba ukube uSidumo wayenabangani
abahle ngabe akagcinanga esengene ebugebengwini.
• Kuhle ukuzijwayeza ukulinda noma ngabe isimo obhekene naso sinzima
kangakanani.
 • Ayikho impunga yehlathi okusho ukuthi uma wenza ubugebengu uzogcina
ubanjiwe.
(It is very important to choose your friends wisely, look at Sidumo he would have not
become a gangster if he had good friends. Also, it is important to know that if you
are a thief, you shall be caught one day and get arrested).

IZINDIKIMBA

ISIZINDA
INDAWO: Yenzeka endaweni yaseThekwini nokuyilapho esivamise ukuzwa
ngezigameko zobugebengu.

ISIKHATHI: Isikhathi samanje ngoba sithola umakaSidumo elalela umsakazo.

ISIMO SENHLALO: Kule ndaba, isimo senhlalo sihle siphinde sibe sibi. Sihle
ngokuthi abantu bayasizana (people help one another) nakhu
sithola ikhehla seliphaphama (wakes up in hospital) esibhedlela
ngemuva kokushayiwa ngabafana bethi lifile. Siphinde sibe sibi
ngokuthi sibona kubo kaSidumo umuzi ojwayele ukuba
nenhlupheko (poverty).
