The Chapter 4 entitled The Scholastic Triumphs at Ateneo de Manila on 1872

– 1877. Rizal studied at prestige and excellent college for boys formerly known as
Escuela Pia (Charity School) which was founded and supervised by the City
government in 1817. In 1859 the Escuela Pia became Ateneo Municipality. Jose took
the entrance exam on Christian doctrine, arithmetic and reading at the college of San
Juan de Letran and passed on june 10, 1872. But his father wants him to entered
Ateneo de Manila because his brother Paciano is studying on that institution. Father
Magin Fernando a college registrar of Ateneo de Manila refused Jose to admit for
two reason. 1. Late for registration; 2. Sickly and undersized for his age. But later on
Rizal was entered Ateneo de Manila, Rizal used Jose as a surname when he was
enrolled in Ateneo for the reason not to be suspected by the Spanish authorities.
Caraballo Street is the address of the boarding house of Jose outside the
intramuros, 25minutes walk from the college. The owner of the boarding house is
Titay a spinster who owed Rizal’s family the amount of 300 pesos.
There are two classification of education in the Ateneo the Jesuits System of
Education and Vocational Courses. The group of students was divided into two the
Roman Empire “Internos” (boarders) and Carthaginians Empire “Externos” (non-
boarders). The Empire is consisted of Emperor, Tribune, Decurion, Centurion,
Standard. June 1872 was the first year of Rizal in Ateneo, the first professor of Rizal
in Ateneo was Fr. Jose Bech. June 1874, Rizal returned to Ateneo for his junior year.
June 16, 1875 he became an interno in the Ateneo. June 1876 Rizal returned to
Manila. He was the most brilliant Atenean of his time, he was truly the pride of the
Jesuit. March 23,1877 Rizal who was16 years old, received from his Alma Mater,
Ateneo Municipal, the degree of Bachelor of Arts, with the highest honor. Therefor as
a student we should strive hard to our studies in order to reach our goals in life.

The Chapter 5 entitled Medical Studies at the University of Santo Tomas. After
graduating with highest honors from Ateneo, Rizal had to go to the University of
Santo Tomas for higher studies. But her mother opposed him because she is afraid
that he will die the same as the GOMBURZA. Rizal enter the university taking the
course on Philosophy and Letters. He enrolled in this course for two reasons; 1. His
father like it and (2) he was still uncertain as to what career to pursue. Fr. Pablo
Ramon,his good adviser during his studies at Ateneo and told him on a letter to study
medicine to cure his mother’s growing blindness.
Rizal had another romance with other girls, first from Calamba he called
“Miss L.” after her in her house several time, he stopped because of his sweet
memories with Segunda and his father did not like the family of Miss L. next was
Leonor, a charming daughter of Capitan Juan and Capitana Sanday Valenzuela from
Pagsanjan Laguna. He visit Orang at their home and show her his clever sleight-of-
hand tricks,wrote note written in invisible ink. But Rizal stopped short of proposing to
Orang because just like Segunda. Next is Leonor Rivera, his cousin from
Camiling,Tarlac and was a frail, pretty girl. Rizal was unhappy at his days at UST.

After finishing his medical course, he decided to study in Spain. Most of us
experienced unhappy days in our studies like doing our home works, research,
lesson plans, etc. same as well as Rizal we should do our best particularly in school
it may be hard right now but soon the success will be ours.

Chapter 6 entitled In Sunny Spain Rizal’s secret mission is to observe the life,
culture, languages, customs, industries, government and laws in the European
Nations. He left a letter to his parents about his mission. He is departure in Spain
was kept to avoid detection by Spanish authorities and friars. His parents don’t even
know because he knew that his mother won’t allow him to go. Before his secret
departure, he wrote a farewell letter to his parent and to his sweetheart Leonor
Rivera. During voyage to Singapore, he carefully observed people and things on
board the steamer. In Singapore, Rizal Transferred to another ship “Djemnah”. A
French steamer. It was a larger and cleaner vessel which can load more passenger.
For the first time Rizal sighted the barren coast of Africa, which called an
“inhospitable but famous”. His first impression of Barcelona, was unfavorable. He
thought that it was ugly, with dirty little inn and inhospitable residents. Later, he
changed his bad impression and he found it to be really a great city. While sojourning
in Barcelona, Rizal received bad news about the cholera that was ravaging Manila
and the provinces. Many people had died and more were dying daily. In Madrid he
spent his leisure time in reading and writing. Rizal was not handsome man but he
possesses aura of charisma due to his many -splendored novel and talents which
made him attractive to the romantic young women. A touching in his life in Madrid
occurred on because he was broke and unable to take breakfast that day. He
completed his medical course in Spain. He was conferred the Degree of Licentiate in
Medicine by the Universidad Sentral de Madrid on June 21, 1884. At long last, Rizal
completed his studies at Spain. As a student the same as Rizal many instances that
comes in our lives like financial problems, family problems, etc. we should fight for
our dreams to aim it and reach it no matter what, even in hard times but we need to
be strong in order to fulfill our dreams in life.

The Chapter 7 entitled Paris to Berlin (1885-1887) After completing his studies
in Madrid, Rizal went to Paris and Germany in order to specialized in ophthalmology.
In Gay Paris he worked as assistant to Dr. Louis de Weckert, leading French
ophthalmologist. Rizal visited his friends Taveras, Juan Luna, Felix R. Hidalgo, Paz
Pardo de Tavera. Rizal went to Paris and Germany To further study ophthalmology
To observe European life and customs, government and laws in (Paris, Heidelberg,
Leipzig & Berlin) Rizal met and befriended Dr. Feodor Jagor Dr. Adolph B. Meyer Dr.
Hans Meyer Dr. Rudolf Virchow In Gay Paris (1885-1886) Past: Rizal completed his
ophthalmology in Central University of Madrid at the age of 24. Rizal stopped at
Barcelona to visit his friend Maximo Viola.

Rizal’s life in Berlin was not mere a student or a curious tourist. He spent
leisure moments touring the countrysides along Berlin. Rizal’s darkest winter for he
lived in poverty because no money arrived from Calamba, he starved in Berlin and
shivered with wintry cold. He began to cough and afraid to have tuberculosis. He
suffered penury and and mourn out his soul out in despair.
