ISSUES WITH “ROHINGYAS” LIVING IN INDIA

1. A threat to National Security: There has been severe ramifications and security threats
associated with the continued illegal immigration of Rohingyas into India. Reports
have emerged of Rohingya refugees engaging in criminal behavior. Often, they lack
legal documentation, language skills, and social networks in their host country,
making them particularly vulnerable to human trafficking. It is possible to lure
victims into trafficking situations with false promises of employment, education, or
other opportunities.1
2. The rise of militancy: Radicalization has grown out of attacks against Muslims
perceived as illegal migrants. Furthermore, there is concern that extremist groups
may radicalize the Rohingya.
3. Disturbance in Law and Order: As illegal migrants engage in illegal and anti-national
activities; the country's rule of law and integrity are undermined. Delhi has six camps
of Rohingya refugees and no law to govern them, resulting in the denial of
fundamental rights.
4. Immigration Policy: The Indian government has taken a hard line in dealing with the
Rohingya refugee crisis. Recently, the government has sought to deport Rohingya
refugees back to Myanmar rather than provide them asylum.
5. Diplomatic Tension: India and Myanmar are at odds over the Rohingya refugee crisis.
Despite allegations of human rights abuses against the Rohingya, India remains close
to Myanmar's military government. There has been criticism of India for not doing
enough to pressure Myanmar to end its violence against the Rohingya.
6. Humanitarian Concerns: The Rohingya refugee crisis poses humanitarian concerns.
There are a large number of Rohingya refugees living in unsanitary conditions in
India. Concerns have also been raised regarding refugees' food, water, and medical
care.
