Before you read the text, think about the questions below.
A quick glance at a map of Earth reminds you how much more water there is than
land on our planet. This makes people think that we have more water than we could
ever use. Is this correct? No, it is not. Earth has a limited supply of usable water.
Only 3% of Earth’s water is fresh water. And of that fresh water, less than 30% is
freely available in rivers, lakes, and groundwater.
While the amount of water on Earth does not change, the human population is
growing. There are now 7.8 million people in the world. Plants and animals also rely
on water. We are using more water than we can sustain.
Some areas of the world have less water available to them than others. These areas
experience droughts. Droughts can negatively affect agriculture, availability of
drinking water, and even a community’s economy. In some places, the concern is
not drought or a limited supply of water, but lack of clean water!
Unfortunately, there is no way to create new water on Earth. However, we can filter
the water we have used. With the process of reclamation, water can be cleaned up
to be used again. Reclaimed water is not as clean as fresh water, so it cannot be
used for drinking. But it can be used for things such as watering, fighting fires and
cleaning.
One of the best ways to address the problem of shrinking water supplies is to
practice conservation of water. Today, many industries are conserving water by
using various methods. Many people are also starting to conserve water in their
everyday lives. Yet, it is possible that we may one day run out of drinkable water.
What are some ways to conserve water at home? Write below what you do and
what can be done to conserve more water.
In the text, it is mentioned that droughts can negatively affect a nation’s economy
and agriculture. Do some research and explain how as well as what can be done
to solve this problem.

WE VALUE WATER
Everything we use, wear, buy, sell, and eat takes water to make. This is called water
footprint. Water footprint is basically everywhere – the fuel we put in our car,
crops we grow, a pair of jeans we produce and even the plastic bottle we use to
drink water. Do you know how much water is used for a fizzy drink? Find out below!
For every fizzy drink, 237.6L water is consumed even before you drink
it! Most importantly, 5 liters of water is required to create a plastic
water bottle.
How much water do you use while washing your hands? An average person uses
3-5 liters of water for a 20-second handwash if they keep the tap open all the time.
This year’s World Water Day theme is Valuing Water. People from all over the
world share how they feel about water and what it means to them on social media.
Now it is your turn!

Did you know that trees play key role in purifying our water, too? Do some
research on how trees provide clean water and explain below.
