Final Project

Report
In 402 studio we assigned to design a material culture and commerce museum in Istanbul.
The site is located on the Golden Horn, near the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. I will
explaine my design in two parts. In first part will be explained with the three aspects of
creative design products. Second part will explained with the three aspects of creative
design process.

First aspect of creative design products is Novelty. The site located in a context which has
a very rich history. And this context has two striking features. One of them is that the site is
located in a filled area and which was used as one of the trade ports in the past. Second is
the old city walls passing by the site. Together with the shape of the site, these two
features shapes the surround buildings orientation and streets. The element of ‘wall’ that
orients the building comes from this feature of the context. In the plan we can see the
trace of the old city walls orients the functions around and near itself, by attaching or
dividing. The functions in the building divided and located with this idea too. Second
aspect is Originality. The orientation of the buildings around the site is give vista to sea
and bosphorus. Despite of the near building, museum look towards to Pera district and
orients peoples to opposite shore of the Golden Horn. The slight rotation to the
orientation of the building gaves also a various functional relations with the ground . This
leads to the third aspect which is Value. The main design element walls and the
orientation that decided with the contextual analysis, shapes the form of the building. This
form creates entrances to people and stop points on the ground floor. These creates
functional relations with the public as well as museum visitors.

The first creative design process aspect is Copy. Copying the annology of orienting people
like in the project ‘The School of Plastic Arts by Mauricio Rocha, Oaxaca, Mexico’ . In this
project walls regulating circulation and dividing function in one axis. Main orientation of
the building conceived with these walls both in plan view and human eye view. In the
studio project, program of the building is museum and the building should be orient and
control the visitors, in the circulation of the exhibitions. In the project ‘The School of Plastic
Arts by Mauricio Rocha’ , the wall that main element of composition which the idea that I
wanted to emphasise in my project. Transform. In the ‘The School of Plastic Arts by
Mauricio Rocha’ , regulating walls has one story height. To adapt the idea to multi-story
heigh museum building, the wall transformed. With the transformations such as breaking
up walls or opening passages through them, the idea of the wall was adapted to the scale
of museum. Combine. Combining the function attached to wall idea, like in the historic
settlements and the regulating visitors in one axis idea, like in the project the school of
Plastic Arts by Mauricio Rocha. These two idea regulates and forms the building, shapes
the circulation in the museum by the element of wall.
