FOCUS ON...

Shakespeare is Special
To mark the 400 years since Shakespeare’s death, it is interesting to get to know the daily
life and hobbies of the greatest English poet.
People who lived in the 16th Century liked ale (an alcoholic beverage that is made from
malt and is darker and more bitter than beer), but not pale ale as we know it! At that time,
beer was more drinkable than water, as it was too contaminated.
In many plays, Shakespeare makes references to alcohol and some of his most famous
characters are known to drink it. One reason could be that his father was an official ale
taster in Stratford, a job that consists in tasting ale and monitoring the ingredients used by
professional brewers.
Not only beer, but also wine is mentioned a lot in his plays, especially those imported from
other countries like France and Spain.
