Be Past Simple: Questions and Answers

To make a question, just like the present simple, we change the position
of 'was / were' and the subject..
YES / NO QUESTIONS
Afirmative Question
I was late Was I late?
You were sick. Were you sick?
He was surprised. Was he surprised?
She was from Italy. Was she from Italy?
It was a big house. Was it a big house?
We were ready. Were we ready?
You were early. Were you early?
They were busy. Were they busy?

How do we answer?
Were you in London last year?
Yes, I was. /No, I wasn’t.
Was Pam with you?
Yes, she was. / No, she wasn’t. Those are yes/no questions.
Were you together?
Yes, we were. / No, we weren’t.

In the case of 'wh' questions with 'be'…


the question word just goes at the beginning, everything else is the same:

Why was I sleepy?


Where were you?
When was he at the cinema?
How was she?
How was it?
Why were we hungry?
When were they at work?

Examples:

Where were you born? I was born in 1998.


Where were they? They were at home.
