Background

GrossBot is an automated laboratory platform that will replace the current state of processing
small biopsy specimens. The current state of processing small biopsy specimens follows the
steps outlined below.

Step 1: The specimen (small biopsy) is collected into these containers, filled with formaldehyde.

Step 2: The container gets to the laboratory and is labeled with Lab specific barcodes and ID.

Step 3: The specimen is taken to the "gross room" where it is first scanned into the computer.

Step 4: A laser printer inscribes the barcode and ID on a tissue cassette (see image).

Step 5: The specimen is transferred from containers to the tissue cassette

.
Step 6: The tissue cassettes are transferred to a formaldehyde filled holding rack.

The goal of the GrossBot is to automate this process.

First: I want a design that combines the specimen container and tissue cassette into one unit
such that the contents of the specimen container can easily be transferred to the tissue
cassette.

Here is the proposed new workflow on the GrossBot:

Step 1: The specimen is placed in the newly designed container.

Step 2: The containers get to the lab and are labeled with Lab specific barcodes and ID.

Step 3: The specimen is aggregated on a tray and loaded onto the GrossBot (specimen in).

Step 4: The GrossBot scans the barcodes on the container.

Step 5: The GrossBot takes a picture of the specimen (the specimen container needs to be
transparent for this).

Step 6: The Grossbot transfers the specimen from the main specimen container to the tissue
cassette.

Step 7: The Grossbot transfers the tissue cassette into a cassette holder.
