BLISS INSTALLATION SHIPPING AND RECEIVING Bliss -22 and C-35 presses are normally shipped in a standing position on a rigid timber skid, inclined to the maximum to minimize height, All componarts such 1s flywheel and front covers are installed on the press, -48 and C-60 presses are placed face down on a rigid timber skid, blocked in placo and held sacuraly to the skid by motal straps, The flywheel cover and front cover ‘are crated in separate containers, A wooden box, attach: ed to the skid holds parts of the press, which, if shipped otherwise, could be damaged or lost in transit. Usually ‘those are the ”V" bets, tubing, hose, service manuals, ac, ‘The mein motor is always mounted on the press skid with the exceptions of @ Variable Speed Drive which is ‘mounted on a separate skid. ‘The entir press is covered with a heavy plastic sheet and tarpaulin to protect it during transit. The tarpaulin is supplied by the common cecrir. Whon the equipment is received, itis suggested that it be inspected prior to removal from the carrier's truck, dotermine if any damage was incurred during transit. Further inspection should be made after removal from tuck. Although our responsibility ceased upon delivery of the shipment to the carver, complete and in goad cordition, ‘we will gladly assist you in tracing delayed shipments or FIGURE 7 in filing loss or damage claims, with tha understanding ‘that doing so is entirely a business courtesy on our part ‘and in no way to be construed as our obligation FOUNDATION FOR THE PRESS: A solid (preferably concrete) footing (floor) must be provided to adequately support the press, The focal soil conditions determine the type and thickness of press footing. The press myst be anchored to the footing through the holes provided in the bese of the lags. Refer to the general plan drawing located elsewhere in this manual for hole sizes, spacing and press weight, FIGURE 8 C-22 thru C-60 SERVICE MANUAL UNLOADING & LIFTING PRESSES 6-22 and C-35, normally. shipped in upright position; can be removed from cartiar’s truck by attaching chains to a shackle installed in the lifting hole provided in the top of the press as shown in figure 9. -46 and C-60 shipped in a face down position; must be lifted from tho carrior's truck by atta shackle installed in the lifting hole provided in the top fof the press (figure 7) and also thru the slots in the press framo (figure 11) NOTE ‘Shackle to be provided by customer. BLISS CLEANING THE PRESS Beforo installing the electrical service the press should be carefully and thoroughly cleaned. Be sure to remove ‘any type of material that was usod to protect the fnish- ed parts. Inspect the slide adjustment area to be sure it is clean and does not contain any foreign matter such as paper, tape, etc. All exposed machined surfaces were ‘coated with oil or rust preventive compounds that must be removed. rrr Donot use gasoline or other material of explosive or toxic nature to clean the press, Good commercial sol- vents that will not effect the finist, aluminum warn- Ing tags, or rubber hoses are available on the rarket. Do not use solvents ou plastic components, Solvents must have a minimum 205° flash point, The following are suggested cleaning solvents: XYLENE ~ Wolverine Solvent and Chemiasl Co. Grand Rapids, Michigan AGITENE ~Graymills Corporation Chicago, Minois After cleaning, all unpainted exposed surfaces should be given a coating of oil to prevent rusting. LEVELING THE PRESS Level (loft to right and front to back) is of major impor- tance in assuring accurate alignment of the slide and bolster. Tho lovling of the press shoud bo accomplished at the same time the press is boing anchored to the floor, The top of the bolster or the bed are the only erees that should be used for leveling. Clean the bolste” and tighten securely before feveling. Using 2 precision tevel, check bolster left to right and front to back and shim between legs and floor if neces sary to obtain sotisfactory reading (Figure 12). Shims should be the same size as the pads on the presi legs. To avoid twisting legs or frame, be sure the press is, tearing on all four (4) pads before tightening anchor bolts, Repeat the leveling procedure after bolis are tightened to be sure press remains love. TEU The front end rear leg bolts of the press may have become loose during shipment and erection. Check and tighten vihere necessary. Mount motor to motor adjustment plate on the top of ‘th press es stiown in figure 13. (Remove four (4) nuts ‘and washers from adjustment plate, set motor on the plate, replace washers and nuts, and tighten securely.) heck for proper alignment of grooves in motor sheaves with grooves in flywheel, If adjustment should be neces- sary, looson the three (3) screws in the sheave on motor, ‘move sheave in or out on motor shaft until properly aligned with flywheel, Place “V" belts in grcoves of flywhool and motor sheave and turn motor adjustment plate screw until bolts con be depressed about one-half inch (with normal thumb pressure) at a point midway in belt span. Connect motor leads to leads from control enclosure, Refer to connection diagram on motor and wiring sche- matic elsewhere in this manual. Be sure to install restraining cable around motor and frame as shown in figure 13. AIR SERVICE It is important that a good supply of clean dry air of sufficient volume and pressure (80 to 100 PSI Max.) be suppliad to the press. crit Approximate clutch air consumption (free air) For stand- ard press is as follows: 0899 cubic feet per single stroke. [1521 cubie feet per single stroke, 2310 cubic feet per single stroke. "3607 cubie feet per single stroke. ‘3607 cubic foot per single stroke, 5770 cubie feet per single stroke. 22 Non geared £.35 Non-geared 45 Non geared C45 Geared €.60 ton-geared 660 Geared Connect shop air line to filter as shown in figure 41. Use new one-half (1/2) inch (minimum) gelvenized pipe. The pipe run should not exceed 50 feet or inadequate air pressure may result. An inlet air shutoff valve should be installed in the supply line close to the press. ‘Adjust the pressure regulators for the clutch and counter- belanee to the pressures designated on the specification plate on the rear of the press. This is very imaortent. USERS HAVE AN OBLIGATION UNDER SECTION 7. of ANSI-B11.1-1971, TO OPERATE THE PRESS WITHIN THE RATING SPECIFIED BY THE MANU. FACTURER. Minimum pressure requirements for the pneumatic sys tem ere controlled by pressure switches which ere fee tory sot. (See air pressure switch, Page 24.) Com- plete lubrication instructions are included in the tubri- cation section of this manual and these should be ‘thoroughly understood end adhered to with @ rogular lubrication schedule. However, crtain components must be lubricated priar to starting the press. 1. Ropace lube lines thgt may have been broken, remov- ‘ed oF pinched during shipment or erection. 2. Add approximately 1/2 pint of Bliss recommonded type “A” oil into the ball sat socket. Coat the limit switch chain and sprocket with Bliss recommended type “H’ grease. 4, On geared presses, coat the main end pinion gear teath liberally with Bliss recommended type “G” grease, 5. Fill airline lubricator with Bliss recommended type "0" oil 6, Fill he raservoir with Bliss recommended type“A oil. Lubrication specifications are shown an pages 28 and 29. rd It is not necessary to grease the antifriction bearings at this time, These have all heen greased at the Bliss factory and excessive greasing can be as detrimental as inadequate greasing, Follow the schedule as outlined in the lubrication bulletin. ‘There are two types of oil systems used to lubri aibs, crankshaft bearings, connection bearings a terbalance cylinders. The stendard is the automatic, press actuated, ol system and the optional recirculating oil system. PRESS ACTUATED SYSTEM ‘This is an automatic cycle lubricator which is ratchat- driven from the press connection rod, and automatically dolivers a pre-set amount of lubricant to each bearing surface, An instant feed button is located on the top of the lubricator to manually actuate the system. This button should be used during inital start-up (or aay startup when press has been inactive for a period of timo) until i! drips freoly from bearings and gibs. This will help purge the bearings ‘and gibs of any foreign ‘material that may have entered during shipment or storage, C-22 thru C-60 SERVICE MANUAL RECIRCULATING SYSTEM (OPTIONAL) This system supplies @ continuous flow of oil to each bogaring surface by means of @ motor driven pump. The cil is then collected and returned to the reservoir. Included is a low pressure switch which ‘press from cycling should the oil pressure be insufficient. This switch was set at the factory and should not be changed. The lube pump motor is controlled by the ‘main motor stert-stop button. During initial start-up ‘the lube pump should be allowed to run for approxi- mately 18 minutes prior to cycling the press. Thisis to ‘purge any foreign material as mentioned above. After the first two days of operation the pressure line filter and the oil should be replaced. FLYWHEEL ROTATION ‘The flywheel, which is driven by the main motor, must rotate in the proper direction for the press to operate as designed, Manually tura the flywheel with a spring load- ed bar, one complete revolution to be sure there is no interference. Lock the press mode solector switch in the "INCH" position (Figure 20). Pull the MOTOR startstop button (figure 13) momentarily and then depress it. The flywheel should rotate as shown in Figure 17. oo Section [6.9.2] of ANSI-B11.1-1971 requires that the press usor shall provide a spring loaded turnover bar. ‘This ber is furnished by Bliss as optional equipment. FLYUMEEL ‘cover \ ‘SPRING LOADED ‘BAR FIGURE 17 =e COVER INSTALLATION The following covers are normelly removed from the press to facilitate shipping: 1, Clutch cover 2. Front press cover 3, Rotary limit switch chain cover All of these covers MUST be installed before the press is initially run with the exception of the front press cover, ‘This may be left off so that oil flow to the crankshaft bearings can be checked. Covers have heen provided for this press in accordance with ANSI B11.1-1971. The press user hes the respon- sibility to see that these covers are in place before the press is put into operation, POINT OF OPERATION GUARDS rd SECTION 5.1 of ANSI - B11.1 - 1971 MAKES THE PRESS USER RESPONSIBLE FOR POINT OF OPERA: TION GUARDS. [UPPER CYLINDER, Lower” PISTON FIGURE SS > -26- C-22 thru C-60 SERVICE MANUAL GENERAL LUBRICATION INSTRUCTIONS One of the most important aspects of press maintenance is proper lubrication. A good tubrication program will ‘add many years to the useful life of your press. Your press can be severely damagod during the frst fow hours of operation if it is not properly lubricated, Correct lubricant opplied et the specified fraquency will provide for better results than an over supply of ubri- cant infrequently enplied. Bliss engineers have worked closely with the major oil companies to establish ubri- ‘ation program for your press. The “Bliss Recommended Lubricant” charts in these instructions list the major ‘companies and their product name. Publication of this list does not meen that only those products listed are acceptable and it is not the intention of E,W. Bliss to suggest thet one of these lubricants must be used. Brand names and types ae shown to simplify procurement and ‘most oil companies will gladly furnish their recommanda- tions for comparable products. ih ‘Tho lubricants listed in these charts may c and/or extreme pressure agents, Ifthe press equirment is or manufacture of food containers, or products where association with these elomentsare objectionble, consult your supplier for recommendation of alternate type, BIJUR LUBRICATION SYSTEM: The system consists of three (3) basic elements: 1. A lubricator (pump) vehich periodicelly forces a mea: ‘sured volume of cil into: 2,A single ine of distribution tubing branched to ‘supply oifto the bearing surfaces through: 3, Meter — Units which proportion the correct oi film to each bearing. The lubricator is ratchet driven from the slide connec- tion and all adjustments were made to deliver oil in the proper quantity to assure continuous and adequate lubri- cation, No further adjustment should be made unless operation of tho press indicates the necessity to do so. ‘As both tho amount of oil and the interval between dolivery periods are capable of variation, itis advisable to ‘make all necassary changes within the pump. We do not recommend that the ratchet mechanism be changed. Refer to manufacturers instruction shoots tocated in the tack of this manual for increasing or decreasing the amount of delivered oil. In tho initial starting of the pross, fill reservoir with Bliss Recommended Type “A” cil, pull end release “Instant Feed Plunger” several times until oil flows freely from all bearings and gibs. rus The instant feed plunger should he used whenever the press has heen inactive for a period of time, It is important to guard against the lubricator becoming low on oil. Oil level is indicated by a glass sight gauge in the reservoir. It is much better to refill regularly rather than dopond upon occasional inspection of the oit level for determining the time to replenish, When adding fresh oil make certain that no ditt or chips are permitted to enter. A filter dise at the pump inlet protects the lubricating system from chips and dirt, It is recommend: ed that the filtor disc be inspected every six (6) months and replaced if necessary. MANUAL LUBRICATION: The antifrition bearings roquire periodic manual lub cation using Bliss graaso typo "H”. Under normal opara- ting conditions these bearings should be given one (1) shot of specifiod grease with @ manual grease gun every ‘three months, Over lubrication will causo over expansion of the. oll scals and over-hoating of the shaft. This may result in binding and failures. On geared presses the main geer and the pinion gear must be coated with Bliss recommended greese type "6". Compressed air is used to en- gage the clutch. When the air pressure is released, the springs set the broke. OPERATION The unit consists of two friction discs, one for the clutch (K-24), and one for the brake (K-17), Figures | ond 2. Brake ond clutch linings {K-5) and (K-7), respectively, are fastened: on: each side of these discs. (K-5) and (K-7) oré furnished as assemblies. | Other major parts consist of one driving dise (K-38), eight driving pins (K-45), two clutch friction dise pins (K-30), two brake’ friction disc pins (K-11), eight clutch springs (K-8), piston (K-9) with one packing (K-3), clutch body (K-1), air cylinder (K-46), clutch cylinder head (K-25), and the broke bracket (165A and 1658). The clutch friction disc revolves: with the fly- wheel while the broke friction disc is stationary. The clutch friction disc is held to the flywheel by clutch friction disc pins (K-30). The brake friction disc is held to the broke brackets by the brake friction disc pins (K-11). Both clutch and brake friction discs float on their respective pins. The clutch friction disc is guided on the pins by disc bushings (K-23), and the broke friction disc by disc bushings (K-16) The clutch and brake friction discs are separ- ated by the driving disc (K-38) which rotates with the crankshaft, tho cluch body (K-1), and the air cylinder (K-46). The driving disc is moved by cir pressure 10 engage the clutch, and by spring pressure to set the broke, NO ADJUSTNENT FOR WEAR IS REQUIRED To engage the clutch, compressed air enters the air cylinder (K-46) through the swivel shaft (AS-1). As pressure moves piston (K-9), it compresses springs (K-8), moving the clutch driving disc (K-38) away from the broke disc (K-17) toward the clutch disc (K-24). This action forces the rotating clutch friction dise (K-24) between the driving disc (K-38) and the clutch body (Ke): As @ result, the crankshoft starts rotating ond transfers flywheel energy to the crankshaft. Air pressure must then be maintained to the air cylinder (K-46) during the ‘operetion of the press. Whon air pressure is released, the broke springs move the driving disc away from the clutch disc ‘end toward the brake disc. This grips the motionless brake disc, disengaging the clutch ‘ond crocting the friction necessory to stop the crankshaft. An air pressure failure will disengage the clutch ‘nd automatically set the brake. NOTE: See Poge 7, Figure 4 for clutch lining replacement. A thumb screw is provided for this purpose on the round pin, while the rectangular pin has a key lock. CAUTION~ The special bumper pin is designed for unsticking. Do not use any other material or device in lieu of the special bumper pin supplied with your press, 6. Determine Desired Rotation. If the slide is stuck before bottom dead center (BDC), arrange to rotate the crankshaft in @ ditec- tion opposite to the normal shaft rotation. ‘The bumping action will then cause the slide to move up and away from the die rather than down and into it If the slide is stuck at or a little after BDC, the crankshaft can be bumped to rotate in its normal direction. 7. Select Proper Rotation. If the press is ‘arranged with @ reversing starter, set the selector switch to ‘forward’? or “reverse” as required. If the press is arranged with @ non-revers- ing starter and a reverse direction is desired to unstick the press, it will be necessary to interchange any two of the three motor leads so that the motor rotation will be reversed. 8 Back Up Bumper Pin. Manually rotate the flywheel in the direction opposite to the direction required to unstick the press until the bumper pin is in contact with the lug on the clutch hub that is opposite to the one that is to be bumped. There are two lugs ‘on the clutch body so that only 180 degrees rotation of the flywheel or gear can be made to unstick the press. 9. Start Motor. Depress motor ‘start’ button momentarily. ‘This action will cause the motor and flywheel to rotate and they will rotate only as long as the Start" button is held depressed. Releasing the “Start!” 10. LL 12. 13. button will érop out the motor starter. Tt is « not necessary to depress the motor “Stop”” button. Hold the ‘‘Start”’ button depressed only long enough to have the pin bump the clutch lug. If the slide does not come unstuck after ‘one blow, it may be necessary to repeat this action. Back up the rotating member until the bumper pin is in contact with one of the lugs and then depress motor start button again. CAUTION— Immediately after bumping ‘occurs, be sure to release the motor start button. ‘Turn Selector Switch to “Bumper Off'"— Alter the slide is unstuck, turn the “bumper off-on"" selector switch to the “off” posi tion. ‘BUMPER oFF, on Remove Bumper Pin~ Rotate the flywheel with a bar until the bumper pin can be reached. Remove the bumper pin from the rotating element of the press. Donot replace Bumper Pin in the receptacle until motor starter has been checked out. Be sure to replace cover on press or on guard. Check Motor Starter. If press is arranged with a reversing starter, check to see that the selector switch has been set to “for ward’? If a non-reversing starter was insuse and the rotation had been reversed for the unsticking operation by changing motor leads, make sure that the leads are returned to their original positions. Restore Bumper Pin. Replace bumper pin in the receptacle on the press control panel. With the pin back in the receptacle, the motor starter can now be actuated to put the press back into operation.
