Jyotirlingas or temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The main
deity of Kashi Vishwanath Temple is Lord Shiva, also known
as Vishwanatha or Vishweshwarar meaning 'the ruler of the
universe'. The city of Varanasi, the cultural capital of India, is
thus known as the city of Lord Shiva. The temple has 800 kg
of gold plating on its tower.

The Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is situated by the
River Assi and was built in the 1900s by the freedom fighter
Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. It is dedicated to Lord Rama
and Hanuman. Varanasi is always related to Sankat Mochan

and is named after the saint poet Tulsi Das. It displays the
Shikhara style of architecture and exhibits various
inscriptions from the Ram Charit Manas on the walls of the
Banaras Hindu University is hence home to one of the
biggest tourist attractions in the city of Varanasi, the grand

7. Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple

The ancient temple of Ratneshwar Mahadev is located on
the Manikarnika Ghat in the holy city of Varanasi. The
Ratneshwar Mahadev temple is said to be the most
photographed temple in the city and is home to the widely
worshipped Lord Shiva. For most of the year, the main part of
the temple also known as the Garbhagriha is covered in the
holy water of the river Ganga. The Ratneshwar temple is one
of the only temples leaning slightly, around 9 degrees.
Legend suggests that a man had built this temple to return a
debt to his mother. Unfortunately, the mother cursed his
gift, which is why it stands at an angle. Often, the priests
have to dive into the water to offer their prayers to the deity
as the entrance of the temple is usually blocked with river
water.

an imposing idol of Goddess Durga and is one of the main

be a spectacular sight for the tourists and devotees. The
architecture is well defined, with carvings on floors, ceiling
and walls; most of the temple being made from marble.
Known for bringing a spiritual, calm relaxation amongst the
devotees, the temple is very popular among the locals and
has gained massive popularity over the years.
