COURSE OUTLINE

GEC RPH – Readings in Philippine History


First Semester, A. Y. 2020-2021

Course Description
This course is specifically designed to facilitate students’ home-based/online learning on Readings in Philippine
History. It analyzes Philippine history from multiple perspectives through the lens of selected primary sources
coming from the various disciplines and of different genres. Students are given opportunities to analyze the author’s
background and main arguments, compare different points of views, identify biases and examine the evidences
presented in the document. The discussion will tackle traditional topics in history and other interdisciplinary themes
that will deepen and broaden their understanding of Philippine political, economic, cultural, social, scientific and
religious history. Priority is given to primary materials that could help students develop their analytical and
communication skills. The end goal is to develop the historical and critical consciousness of the students so that they
will become versatile, articulate, broadminded, morally upright and responsible citizens.

General Objectives
1. Equip engineering students with historical and critical consciousness as well as analytical and creative thinking
skills to analyze primary and secondary historical texts and to demonstrate proficient and effective
communication;
2. Facilitate the use of basic concepts across the domains of knowledge in the examination of the contemporary
world from both the Philippine and global perspectives;
3. Provide opportunities for engineering students to reflect critically on shared concern, to take responsibility for
knowing and being a Filipino, and to contribute personally and meaningfully to the country’s development;
4. Require these students to work effectively in a group, use the current technology to assist and facilitate their own
learning and research, manage their own knowledge, skills, and values for responsible and productive living, as
well as organize themselves to prepare for lifelong learning (CHED Readings in Philippine History Syllabus).

Course Intended Learning Outcomes
 Define history and determine its relevance;
 Evaluate primary sources for their credibility, authenticity, and provenance.
 Analyze the context, content, and perspective of different kinds of primary sources.
 Determine the contribution of the different kinds of primary sources in understanding Philippine History.
 Develop critical and analytical skills with exposure to primary sources.
 Demonstrate the ability to formulate arguments in favor or against a particular issue using primary sources.
 Effectively communicate, using various techniques and genres in the historical analysis of a particular event or
issue that could help others understand the chosen topic;
 Propose recommendations or solutions to present-day problems based on their understanding of root causes and
their anticipation of future scenarios
 Display the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and contribute to a group endeavor.
 Manifest interest in local history and show concern in promoting and preserving the country’s historical and
cultural heritage.
