INTRODUCTION:

Surgery or also known as an operation is a process in medical science where a


part of someone’s body is removed, sometimes permanently or to repair the
deformities and diseases inside the body and return, the person that performs
this procedure is called a surgeon. They are responsible from the start of the
process, which is the preoperative diagnosis of the patient that may need surgery.
This responsibility goes on while they’re already performing the operation until
they’re done providing the patient with the postoperative surgical care. Over the
span of years, a lot of advancement have had a significant amount of impact on
the practice of surgery that offers safer, less time consuming manner and allows
for better patient care. These technologies include Electro surgery from the early
20th century, practical Endoscopy that began in 1960s, Laser surgery, Computer-
assisted surgery, and Robotic surgery that had been developed in the 1980s, etc.
The American College of Surgeons recognizes 14 surgical specialties:
cardiothoracic surgery, colon and rectal surgery, general surgery, gynecology and
obstetrics, gynecologic oncology, neurological surgery, ophthalmic surgery, oral
and maxillofacial surgery, orthopaedic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, pediatric
surgery, plastic and maxillofacial surgery, urology, and vascular surgery. Being a
surgeon has a relatively high salary but as a profession, it has its drawbacks too
that you might need to consider before planning on becoming one and these
include the money, time, stress, and potential encounter to a lawsuit.

NATURE OF WORK:

A surgeon usually works in a hospital and their specialty is performing routine


or emergency operations on medical patients. As a surgeon, they need to be
responsible in performing operations on various patients with injuries or illnesses.
Their job or role also includes communicating with the patient to find out what to
do and prepare the necessary equipment for the upcoming surgery. In addition,
regardless of the difference in culture from different places and time periods, the
work of a surgeon stays the same. Besides doing their work, they also must ensure
cooperation with other members of the surgery team. As a surgeon, a person
needs extensive education and training because there are certain skills they must
possess to be a truly successful and effective surgeon. A surgeon must have
courage and move with speed and precision and they must know different types
of sharp instruments. They have responsibilities for the preoperative diagnosis of
the patient and caring and giving the patient the medication they need. A surgeon
needs to know how to always operate on the patient calmly. Always be careful
about what you have to do because people’s lives depend on it.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Besides the operation itself, a surgeon is also responsible for taking care of the
patient prior to the actual surgical procedures. However, their primary duties
varies depending on their specialization and employer. Few more of a Surgeon’s
duty includes the following. Initially, a surgeon needs to collect their patient’s
medical history and records. Next is keeping the patient information up to date
with current test results and treatments. They also need review test results to be
able to identify and diagnose medical conditions. Additionally, a surgeon must
also make and develop treatment plans for patient care. Addressing any of the
questions or concerns of the patient or their family is a must too. Besides that,
surgeons must also aid their patient throughout the healing process after the
intraoperative phase of the perioperative period. To conclude, collaboration
within a team of other medical professionals is also important for a surgeon.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

A lot of surgeons mostly work in private or public hospitals, even though some
might go into private practices. Surgeons generally have long hours of work. This
may include the evenings and weekends, it all depends on the situation and how
busy at the moment. Moreover, surgeons are also required to be on-call in case of
an emergency.

Surgeons work and operate in theatre rooms. Everything inside that room must be
completely sterile. The surgeons must also wear protective clothing to protect
themselves and their patients from harm.

Surgeon have a high level of contact and communication with their patients
because they need to know how they feel. Surgeons may also grow a generally
high level of contact with the family of their patients. And with this knowledge, we
can conclude that communication skills is a must too in being a surgeon. Lastly,
with their communication skills, they must also stay in contact with other medical
professionals at work, which may include general practitioners, nurses, and
anesthetists.

EMPLOYMENT:

A surgeon have both an office and a medical facility for the operation.
Their spaces might be in hospitals or other surgical centers, or
sometimes off-site in an office building. They might also share this office
space with several other doctors inside the facility they are in. Surgeons
actually sit a lot during office work while assessing patients and
prescribing medicines. Office works also includes extensive usage of
computers. This is because medical records are increasingly being
maintained digitally. The surgeons inside the same work space are also
required to communicate with administrators and more personnel. This
action is to ensure that the office operates according to the standards
that it wants to uphold. On the other hand, their hospital works
requires standing for a long time while performing surgeries, which
contradicts with the other. Surgery rooms are fast-paced environment
with a lot of people, along with the surgeon, performing separate tasks
as to prevent stalling time. As the man that acts as the leader in surgical
team, the surgeon needs to give clear directions so that each team
members performs their part quickly and accurately. Lastly, being clean
and maintaining good hygiene is a must in surgery for it to be safe for
the patient.

TRAINING: QUALIFICATIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

If you want to become a surgeon, you will undergo a long process to


go through, First you need to have high scores and grades in math and
science. You must also have a passion for medicine and the human
body, and the ability to safely handle sharp tools. Before becoming a
surgeon, there are four years for an undergraduate, four years for a
medical surgeon course and five years for a residency. Every surgeon
has their own experiences, it’s kind of an on-the-job training where they
learn proper surgical procedures. Every move they make, they need to
interact with patients and follow every hospital policy. They also have
practical implications, especially in learning to take medical histories to
evaluate patients. They must have a certificate that proves having a
Bachelor’s degree in health science from a four year schooling and
completed medical school to become a surgeon. Every surgeon needs a
license to prove that they can operate on a patient. It’s not easy to
become a surgeon because a person’s life is on the line for every
operation they do. As much as possible, they need to always be careful
for every act of operating on the patient.

JOB OUTLOOK:

Each state is expected to have occupations connected to medicine


and a number of people might become a surgeon. The general
employment of doctors and surgeons is expected to grow in the next
few years. Up to 3 percent from 2021 to 2031, which is slower than
most of all occupations. Among all the limited job growth, about 23,800
openings are there for those in need of medicinal careers including
surgeons. Everyone is also looking forward to job openings because of
concern to people’s health care.

EARNINGS:

A person working as a surgeon in the Philippines usually earns around


128,000 PH monthly. Salaries range from the lowest, which is 43,100
PHP and can range up to its highest, which is 199,000 PHP. Additionally,
they can earn an average of 1,540,000 PHP per year.
