Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common type of arthritis. It is a disease of joints which
commonly affect joints in your hands, knees, hips and spine. Over 30 million US adults were
affected by the disease. When the smooth cushion between bones (cartilage) breaks down, joints
can get painful, swollen and hard to move. OA can happen at any age, but it commonly starts in
the 50s and affects women more than men. This disease starts gradually and worsens over time.
Osteoarthritis symptoms can usually be managed, although the damage to joints can't be
reversed. Staying active, maintaining a healthy weight and some treatments might decrease
progression of the disease and help to improve pain and joint function.
Causes
Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in your joints gradually
deteriorates. Eventually, if the cartilage wears down completely, bone will rub on bone.
Osteoarthritis has often been referred to as a "wear and tear" disease. But besides the breakdown
of cartilage, osteoarthritis affects the entire joint. It causes changes in the bone and deterioration
of the connective tissues that hold the joint together and attach muscle to bone. It also causes
inflammation of the joint lining.

Treatment
There is no cure for OA, but medication, nondrug methods and assistive devices can help to ease
pain. As a last resort, a damaged joint can be surgically replaced with a metal, plastic or ceramic
one.
Medications
Pain and anti-inflammatory medicines for osteoarthritis are available as pills, syrups, patches and
creams, or they are injected into a joint. They include:
