Name of the food

 Food labels are a legal requirement and they are important for
many reasons.
 They help consumers make informed choices about the food they
buy, help them to store and use it safely and allows people to plan
when they will consume it – all of which help to reduce food
wastage.
Nutritional facts

 Nutritional facts labels provide information on the food we choose


to eat and feed to others.
 Their importance stems from everyday people being able to make
educated choices on their own health and tailor their options to fit
their needs and desires.
Veg or Non-veg mark

 To safeguard the interests and the sentiments of such people a food


product label must have the identification mark “Veg” or “Non-
Veg” for the category of food.
 It is mandatory for all food manufacturers to indicate as to whether
the food item contains any non-vegetarian ingredients or not.
The ingredient list

 The ingredient list is the single best tool at your disposal to determine
if a food product is a good choice or not.
 In fact, it is the only way to determine if the item is made of real
food or if it contains added sugars, vegetable oils, and additives.
Declaration of food additives

 The use of an inappropriate quantity may be deleterious to the


food or to the consumer.
 Approved food additives have effects on different areas of human
health like allergies, hyperactivity in children and decrease in
human immune response when they are applied over the limit
suggested by the regulatory agencies.
Address of manufacturer

 Also if the product purchased by the consumer gives any kind of


harm to him or it is defective or have a side-effect on heath, then
the consumer is aware of the producer from the manufacturer's
name & could also take a action on it by visiting the manufacturer
address.
Batch number

 A batch number is a powerful tool that can help you track down
goods that are about to expire or need to be recalled.
 It is important to be able to quickly locate defective products and
goods about to expire within your distribution network, which could
be at: Warehouse locations. Logistical locations
Instructions for use

 In order to ensure correct utilization of the food, the Food


Regulations require the manufacturer or the packer to mention the
“ Instructions for use” on the label on the Pre-packaged food.
 The instructions may include the directions regarding reconstitution
or dilution of the product before use, where applicable.
Net quantity

 All prepacked foodstuffs, with limited exceptions, must be labelled


with information on the net quantity of the foodstuff, i.e. its weight or
volume, which does not include the packaging material.

 They use tags to label a specific item or product so the consumer


can see how much it costs.
 Research shows that if a customer is able to clearly see the price of
a product they will be more likely to buy it
Best before date

 The best before date, sometimes shown as BBE (best before end), is
about quality and not safety.
 The food will be safe to eat after this date but may not be at its best.
Its flavour and texture might not be as good.
Use by

 The date of manufacture is the date on which the food becomes


the product it is supposed to be.
 The use by or the expiry date refers to the date after which the food
cannot be consumed, therefore the food must be consumed
before the date.
