Topic: Noise Pollution
Noise
•Noise is the unpleasant and undesirable sound which leads to discomfort
in human beings
•Safe limit for hearing:0-80 dB
•Noise is sound that is greater than 120 dB
Noise pollution
Noise pollution is considered to be any unwanted or disturbing
sound that affects the health and well-being of humans and other
organisms.
Sources of Noise pollution
• Traffic
• Fast running trains along railway track
• Taking off the airplanes and landing
(Air traffic noise)
• Farm machines
• Loud speakers in city
• Construction sites
• animals
• Engines of ships and super tankers at sea cause a lot of noise
• Volcanic eruptions create the loudest noise capable of travelling
hundreds of kilometer(around 300 dB)
Effects of Noise pollution
• Initial damage may be temporary
• Sleep disturbance and psychological effects like stress and hypertension
• Constant exposure can damage the inner ear cells that convert sound waves
into auditory nerve signals permanently and cause deafness
• Sudden and extreme noise can cause immediate hearing loss
• If it does not lead to deafness-it causes a disease called tinnitus that causes
ringing in our ears
• Excessive noise pollution may affect marine life and whale migration(Sound
travels faster with higher intensity for a longer time in water)
• Factory workers, military, police and musicians are at high risk due to
constant exposure to noise
• Cardiovascular issues: High blood pressure level, stress and cardiovascular
diseases might come up in a normal person and a person suffering from any
of these diseases might feel a sudden shoot up in the level.
Prevention, Solution and Reduction
• Honking in public places like teaching institutes, hospitals, etc. should be banned.
• In commercial, hospital, and industrial buildings, adequate soundproof systems
should be installed.
• Musical instruments’ sound should be controlled to desirable limits.
• Use Earplugs.
• Lower the volume.
• Explosives should not be used in forest, mountainous and mining areas
• Follow the Limits of Noise level.
• Control Noise level near sensitive areas.
• Increase the number of trees in surroundings(Vegetation reduces noise pollution
through a phenomenon called sound attenuation)
Sound attenuation: Reduction of sound intensity. Normal attenuation of sound
occurs as the energy of sound dissipates over long distances until not enough
energy is left to vibrate air molecules. Vegetation hastens the normal
attenuation mechanisms of absorption, deflection, refraction, and masking)
