RE: READING PROJECT “LET’S REA+D!”

To whom this may concern,

Team A+ is pleased to present this proposal for your review. We look forward to partnering with you
to deploy a reading project aiming at students in Le Van Tam Primary School, which locates in Hoa
Binh Cỉty. The objective of the project is to help students to have a new look at reading as well as
providing them a new method of learning.

During the last few months, we have been researching similar projects and see that most of them
have succeeded. However, we wish to make a new move on this project, The “LET’S REA+D!”
project provides students with access to assistive reading systems, along with training for classroom
teachers and reading specialists.

We have seen measurable success and we are now seeking to expand our “LET’S REA+D!” project
to address the needs of all the at-risk students in the Le Van Tam Primary School. Our proposal
requests … in funding to obtain the software, hardware, and training necessary to equip the Le Van
Tam Primary School resource room with a sufficient amount of books, including the Vietnamese
version and the original English version, as well as other facilities that are needed in the final
presentation.

We appreciate The Faculty of Business English of Foreign Trade University taking an interest in
helping our students develop their reading skills through our new reading program! Please give me a
call at 09xxxxxxxx if you require any further information or have any questions concerning this
proposal.

Thank you,

Ms.

1. Project Abstract

Le Van Tam Primary school, located in Hoà Bình Province, is in need of a new method of teaching
and new learning experience. Therefore, Team A+ from the Faculty of Business English, Foreign
Trade University wish to bring them a reading project, named “LET’S REA+D!”. The reading
project will use the bilingual book “Alice in Wonderland” as a new way of introducing students to
novels, and giving them the opportunity to express their creativity through the presentation after
reading the book. The objective of this project is to improve both the reading skills and English
knowledge, as well as creating a more friendly view of novels in children ages 6 to 11. Funding in
the amount of ... is requested for the “LET’S REA+D!” project to efficiently operate, and this
expense will be invested in staff training and to purchase the required equipment that will be used
during the project.

2. Statement of Need

a) The context:

Today’s primary students in GT4 (Hanoi, HCM City, Danang, Cantho) have already accessed the
new educational methods of Literature and English (for example, reading projects, theatricalization
of literature pieces, bilingual libraries, etc.). However, those in the suburban areas and provinces
have yet to receive such privileges. The reasons for that vary from a lack of resources in new
educational methods to the institution’s level. Still, the problem leads to the unevenness in the
students’ skills, knowledge, and academic performance between urban and rural areas.

b) Target audience:

As a result of the context analysis, the team decided to choose primary students in a rural
area/province to be our target audience.

We wish to bring them a new learning experience and approach to basic subjects (which are
Literature and English). As a consequence, if succeeding, our project would be a springboard for this
up-to-date teaching method to be used more in schools in suburban areas to improve the academic
quality of students in those locations.

c) Hoa Binh Province, Le Van Tam Primary school and students in Le Van Tam Primary
school:
(1) Hoa Binh Province:
The government of Hoa Binh is investing in education (improving school facilities, institutional
level, etc.) to improve the quality of education and students. However, there are schools not
investing enough and students in such schools have yet to access the new educational methods.

(2) Le Van Tam Primary school and its students:

Le Van Tam primary school has been investing in educational activities; however, they are not really
up to date with the new methods of teaching. Still, it can be seen that the school has the desire to
level up its educational quality. So, there are chances that the leadership body and teachers of the
school get interested in the reading project, as it might help students in schools get a new approach
to learning Literature and English.

Students in the school are from the age of 6 to 11, so they have the tendency to be curious about the
new and interesting learning methods, but not those which are lame as teachers reading the books,
and they write down what the teachers tell them. Things that they need now is an opportunity to get
an approach to such new methods and improve their academic and soft skills and reading and
English.

3. Goals & Objectives

The main goal of the reading project is to help the students get exposure to reading culture as
well as digital resources of knowledge and improve their English skills through a bilingual reading
project. Since students at Hoa Binh Province are still limited to the opportunities of learning English,
they are likely to have poor performance in exams and communication regarding the English subject.

The main objectives of the project include:

1. Improve student’s reading comprehension, including not only absorbing information but also
understanding and expressing knowledge gained from reading books.
2. Enhancing the interest for reading and any related areas involved book acquisitions for students,
creating a reading-friendly environment within school and families.
3. Encouraging and mentoring the use of both the school library as well as digital resources of books
for knowledge research and character development.
4. Distribute correctly the timetables so that classes are provided with a reasonable amount of
reading time weekly.
5. Improve student’s English skills, especially reading comprehension and vocabulary.

4. Program Description
The program will be divided into 4 stages: Appetizer, Side dish, Main course and Dessert.
- Controlling cycle: The organizing team - teachers - families
- Controlling materials: assessment survey (teachers) - school report assessment (families)

a) Appetizer:
- Through the school’s forum and teacher’s announcement, students will know about this
project.
- Students will fill out an application form to participate in the event (The organizers must
know the exact number of participants in order to conduct team division with a maximum of
8 members per team).

b) Side dish:
- After settling on the team division, students are assigned to read the novel “Alice in
Wonderland”.
- Each week, there will be a period when the teacher will guide students to discuss the
meaning of the book and explain to them the deeper layers of meaning.
- The teacher can expand the time for its discussion from some periods if 1 period per week is
not enough and open a small study session to answer questions if students have any doubts
about the content in the book.
- After a month, teams are required to create a project about (any) messages from the book.
The project’s methodology can vary from a play, a fashion show to an exhibition of art
models/drawings,...

c) Main course:
- A school gathering (similar to a school's festival) will be held to present all projects:
- With the assistance of the organizers, students construct booths (make sure the design shows
the colors and images of the event) and then decorate a little more to make their booths
different from others.
- In order, each team will present their works in different forms (a play, a fashion show, an
exhibition of art models/drawings, etc.).
- The teachers will participate as the judges and visit each booth to observe the students'
presentations before marking the results according to the band score.
d) Dessert:
- After the presentation, each team will be judged to filter out 3 teams that have the highest
points. These teams will be awarded with prizes (money/items).
- The mark that students get will be used as a criteria to grade their conduct.
- After the project ends, students participating in the project will be given a survey
questionnaire while the faculty members and family members of the students will be given a
feedback form.
- The questionnaire and feedback will be collected to evaluate the project’s success. Future
projects can use the experience from this project to have a more appropriate approach.

4.2. Assistive Reading Technology
Here are some examples of technology devices that will be utilized in the project, with the purpose
that provided the best methods of reading for students:

a) Graphic Organizers
Graphic organizers allow students to take notes visually, mapping out ideas and concepts through
visual representations (digital or handwritten). This tool helps visual learners who struggle with
reading comprehension organize concepts in text in a way that suits their unique learning style. This
can lead to a better understanding of the connections between and sequencing of ideas in a text.

b) Audiobooks
- Encourage students in listening repeatedly and practicing listening

c) Text-to-speech
- Text-to-speech (TTS) technology allows the reader to select a section of text and have a computer-
generated voice read that selection of text aloud.

4.3. Internal promotion plans

a) Before the presentation

- Hang banners for the event on the walls and in the trees around the school.
- Create a post on the school's Facebook page with an eye-catching image to promote the
event.
- Negotiate with the school so that teachers can send direct announcements about the
upcoming event to students.

b) In the presentation
- Construct a stage that displays the event's colors and images (make sure the booths designed
by the students also meet this condition).
- Prepare handheld hashtags for the event and a checkin booth.
- Posts the pictures of students’ final product and their performance on the day of the
presentation.
c) After the presentation
- Write a thank you post (with an image) and post it on the school's Facebook page for the
participation of teachers and students.
- Leave business cards and contact platforms so that we can have chances to collaborate with
other needy schools.
