Any poems about love by Dorothy Parker (1893–1967) are bound to be a bit
scathing! Parker was an American writer, satirist and critic renowned for her
wit and remembered as one of the founding members of the Algonquin Round
Table in the 1920s. Darkly funny, with a playful rhyme scheme and surprising
twists, “Love Song” gets at a truth we may hate to admit: Sometimes it’s the
ones you love who get under your skin the most. Read the poem in its
entirety, as well as some more funny poems, in Parker’s 1926 poetry
collection Enough Rope: A Book of Light Verse.
