GE 112 - Mathematics in the Modern World

Problem Set 1
First Semester 2023 - 2024

Write your answers in a short bond paper (handwritten). If possible, show your complete
solution. Copying of statements or questions is not necessary.

1. (6 points) Determine whether the following is a mathematical statement or an ex-

pression. If it is a mathematical statement, indicate its truth value (T or F).

a. 527 ≥ 300 + 200 + 25 − 5 + 10 − 3

b. 1000(0.5) + π + e
c. 123 − 456 = −456 + 122 + 1

2. (6 points) Given the statements,

p: It is not a sunny day.
q: Today is tuesday.
r: I will not procrastinate.
s: I will pass my schoolworks on time.
t: I will not get a 1.0 in MMW.
write the following symbolic form into a statement form:

a. (∼ p ∨ q) → (r ∧ s)
b. (∼ r∧ ∼ s) → t

3. (8 points) Determine the truth value of the following compound statements given
that p is a false statement, q is a true statement, and r is a true statement.

a. p ∧ (∼ p ∨ r)
b. (p ∧ q) ∨ (∼ p ∧ ∼ q)

4. (8 points) Explain the following.

a. Given that p is a false statement, what can be said about p ∧ (q ∨ r)?

b. Explain why it is not necessary to know the truth values of q and r to determine
the truth value of p ∧ (q ∨ r) in part a above.

5. (7 points) Let p, q, r, s be statements. If p is a true statement, is it possible to deter-

mine the truth value of [(p → q) ↔ (r ∨ s)] ∨ p without using the truth table? Explain
your answer.

Note: [(p → q) ↔ (r ∨ s)] is grouped and is considered as a single statement.
