They have lived and have tossed: So much of the game will be gain, Though the gold of the dice has been lost.” Jack London's short story "Love of Life" is about two gold prospectors, Bill and an unnamed man, who are struggling to survive on the frozen Canadian tundra. They crossed the tundra in search of food, while suffering hunger and exposure to the elements. When the unnamed man sprained his ankle, Bill abandoned him and continued through the wilderness, his will to survive was tested.
Circumstances are turned over in the story when it seems that
Bill was killed by the elements, he carried the sack of gold with him until the very last minute. The man who sprained his ankle went to meet him in the wilderness, but forgot to bring his gold. In the end, he used to crawl through the tundra, without any weapons. After surviving a wolf's attack, he is discovered by a group of expeditions traveling by ship in a semi-conscious state. . He wastaking precautions against another possible famine—thatwas all. He would recover from it, the scientific men said;and he did, ere the Bedford’s anchor rumbled down in SanFrancisco Bay.
This is a story about survival at its purest. It is an exploration of
a man's will to exist. London tells the story in great detail, recounting the moments of fear, anguish and hunger his protagonists endured.
