Glass Animals - Heatwaves

Guitar project

In this project you’ll be learning how to play on the acoustic guitar. The song that you’ll be
learning is Heatwaves by Glass Animals ( Click on the link if you don’t know the song)

This document will help you step by step in learning how to play this song. It is accompanied by
an instructional video which also contains various exercises which will help you learn this song.

For this song you will be playing nger style. This means that you hit the guitar strings with
di erent ngers of the right hand We use our thumb (T) index nger (I) and middle nger (M)

See illustration below as an example:

When we look at the order of the right hand picking we will see that the order goes as following:
Thumb, Index, Middle, Thumb, Index, Middle, Thumb, Index+Middle

With the Left hand we will make the chord shapes. When you look at a chord illustration you will
see di erent numbers. These numbers represent the ngers of the left hand. The left index nger
is numbered 1, the middle nger is numbered 2, the ring nger is numbered 3 and the pink is
numbered 4.

The “X’s” above the neck indicate these are strings we don’t use.
The green number indicates the fret number. In this case

In this exercise you will learn the rst chord that is being played C#-minor.

Place your left index nger on the fourth fret of the fth string.
Place your left pink on the sixth fret of the third string.
Place your left ring nger on the fth fret of the second string.

Place your right index nger under the the third string.

The second exercise consists of learning the second chord B-Major.

Place your left index nger over the second fret of the fth string.
Place you left pink on the fourth fret of the third and second strings.

Place your right thumb on the fth string.


Place your right index nger under the the third string.
Place your right middle nger under the second string.

In this exercise you will be playing the chords from exercise 1+2 after another.
You play one measure C#-minor followed by one measure B-Major, then back to a measure C#-
minor followed again by a measure B-Major.

Make sure to use to correct ngering in the left- as well as the right hand and make sure that the
change between the chords goes uently. Practice this slowly at rst and gradually build up
speed during the proces.

In this exercise you’ll learn the next chord G#-minor.

Place your left index nger on the fourth fret of the sixth and third
string.
Place your left pink on the sixth fret of the fourth string.

Place your right thumb on the sixth string.


Place your right index nger under the fourth string.
Place your right middle nger under the third string.

In this exercise you’ll learn the new chord F#-Major.

Place your left index nger on the second fret of the sixth string.
Place your left pink on the fourth fret of the fourth string.

Place your right middle nger under the third string.

In this exercise you’ll be playing the chords from exercise 4 and 5 after one another.
Play the G#-minor chord one measure, followed by the F#-Major chord for one measure, then
back to the G#-minor chords for one measure, followed by F#-Major for one measure.

change between the chords goes uently. Practice this slowly at rst and gradually build up
speed during the proces.

You’ve now learned all the chords there are in this song .

Exercise 6 already consists of the rst four measures of this song. In exercise 9 you’ll be playing
the second four measures and in exercise 10 you’ll play all eight measures after one another thus
playing the song.
