ACADEMIC PROJECTS
Terrestrial latent heat flux estimation over tropical forests using machine learning algorithms April 2023
Prediction of latent heat flux using reanalysis data. [Code]
• Latent heat flux (LE) is a fundamental component in the study of Earth’s energy balance and the exchange of
energy and water between the Earth’s surface and the atmosphere. It can be measured by various methods. The
flux tower measured LE based on Eddy-Covariance method is most accurate as compared to other method, but
this method is cost expensive, need serious monitoring and small area coverage. Where as the LE measured by
MODIS satellite based on Penman-Monteith equation is a global product with less accuracy. The RMSE between
MODIS LE and flux tower LE was 25 to 32 W m−2 .
• We analyse daily reanalysis environmental data from IMDAA and ERA5 which is publicly available. Five machine
learning models are trained on five sites over tropical region to predict LE using reanalysis data. The RMSE
between flux tower LE and machine learning models predicted LE was reduced to 11 to 16 W m−2 . The support
vector regression model outperform as compared to other models.
Two-stage fabric defect detection using deep learning. December 2022 - April 2023
MobileNetV2 and YOLOv8 are used for classification and localizing the defect in the fabric. [Code]
• In past work on fabric defect detection most of the used data set size was small and contains less numbers of
fabric type. In this work, the data set contains 90000 images of fabric containing 40 types of fabric.
• The defect detection task is done in two stages. In first stage MobileNetV2 classify that the image is defective or
not. If the Image is defective then in second stage YOLOV8 localize the defect by boundary box. The accuracy of
MobileNetV2 and YOLOv8 was 91.8% and 64%. Due to the lower accuracy of YOLOV8, the task has been divided
into two stages to ensure that no defects are missed by the model. Yolov8 plays a crucial role in reducing the time
taken by an operator to locate minor defects in fabric.
Image upscaling by super resolution GAN December 2023
Super resolution GAN with perceptual loss is used to upscale the image. [Code]
• Generative Adversarial Network, is a powerful framework in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence.
We have used it to upscale the images.
• The GAN was trained with mean squared error and perceptual error generated by VGG16 model. The PSNR
between upscale image by GAN and original image was approximately 42 dB. The PSNR between compressed
image and original image was approximately 21 dB.
