Resumen:
The study focuses on the development of knowledge in the health care field, which often includes
ambiguous and tentative information. Both students and practitioners of physical therapy are faced with
the task of constantly assessing the validity of such knowledge in their daily practice. Epistemological
beliefs, i.e., beliefs about the nature of knowledge, and therapeutic concepts in health are factors that
influence how people handle knowledge in health. However, little is known about how these factors
develop over the course of individuals' careers. In this study, we investigated the concepts of
epistemological beliefs and therapeutic health of physical therapy students during their training and of
total of 83 students and 84 professionals participated in this study, with 114 out of 167 (68%)
participants being female. The evidence-based practices (EB) and therapeutic health concepts differed
based on the participants' training status. Professionals exhibited more sophisticated EB in both
physiotherapy knowledge (F(2, 164) = 6.74, P = 0.002, η2 p = 0.08) and medical knowledge (F(2, 164) =
3
5.93, P = 0.003, η2 p = 0.07) compared to the students. Additionally, high values in a biopsychosocial
therapeutic health concept were observed at an early training phase (F(2, 164) = 5.39, P = 0.005, η2 p =
0.06), whereas elevated values in a biomedical concept did not occur until individuals' professional life
This article discusses a study that examines the epistemological beliefs and therapeutic health
concepts of physiotherapy students and professionals. The results show that professionals have more
sophisticated beliefs than students, and that the development of these beliefs is not restricted to a person's
oriented, and advanced students had already achieved high scores in the biopsychosocial concept. The
study suggests that including real challenges of professional life in health care training would enable
students to apply various perspectives to health problems and could also facilitate inter-professional work.
The article concludes by encouraging authors to submit their manuscripts to BioMed Central for
convenient online submission, thorough peer review, and immediate publication on acceptance (Martina
