Castaway found alive!

Last night, a castaway was rescued from a remote island in the South
Seas. Reportedly, a pirate and buccaneer, Selkirk was, allegedly, forced
off the ship that later sank in the ocean. The ship had sojourned at the
island in their search for gold and treasure. Selkirk was accused of
instigating his fellow sailors to desert the ship because it was going to
sink due to deterioration caused by woodworm infestation. However, his
advice was mocked by Stradling, the captain of the ship, which led to a
brawl between the two as the former assaulted the captain. As a result,
Selkirk was abandoned, along with his treasure chest, to remain
marooned on the isolated island as a lesson for others by Stradling. One
of the sailors commented that Selkirk’s plea for forgiveness was
ruthlessly turned down.

Selkirk was left on the island with his sea chest that housed his gun,
ammunition and clothes, which helped him manage to survive until he
was rescued. The seafarer felt trapped on the island which led him to feel
depressed and isolated. Nevertheless, he stayed active and built himself a
shelter that protected him from the elements and a perch to look for
help. He lived on whatever he could find to eat such as fish, pimentos,
and watercress. As time passed, he became more resourceful and found
various food sources. He accepted his fate and began to appreciate his
surroundings which lifted his spirit; he admired the natural beauty of
the place, the humming of birds and fragile ferns.

After a thorough examination of reported facts and opinions of surviving

sailors, it was discovered that Selkirk was not to be blamed fully for his
abandonment. The sinking of the ship proved that he was right to raise a
concern about the safety of his fellow sailors. However, his short temper
and overruling the captain and informing only the crewmen about the
ship rendered him partially responsible for the ordeal he suffered. To a
great extent, Stradling can be held responsible, for causing such an
unfortunate incident as he refused to listen to the advice. Moreover, he
was reported to announce, “You could be food for vultures” and
ordered the crew to set sail. Furthermore, the crew is also responsible for
showing no compassion toward their companion.
