Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the education system globally for two years

already. The most vulnerable students were affected the hardest. The inequalities were

doubled and the pre-existing crisis worsened. School closures have ranged from no

closures in a handful of countries to up to more than a full school year. (“Education:

From disruption to recovery”, n.d)

Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this study is to determine the level of the overall academic

performance of the Grade 12 students in EVAA during the implementation of distance

learning.

Specifically, the study will answer the following Research Question:

1. What is the level of the students’ academic performance based on GPA?

1.1 High Performance

1.2 Low Performance

2. What are the perceived factors that contribute to the achievement?

2.1 High achievement

2.2 Low achievement

3. Based on the perceived factor which one is more prevalent in affecting the

overall academic performance of the Grade 12 students in EVAA?

Review of Related Literature

This study presents the related literature and studies of the level of the overall

academic performance of the Grade 12 students that will be used by the researcher in

strengthening the present student.

Related Literature

The variables under consideration were the academic performance (student’s

grades/marks) as a dependent variable and the gender, faculty of study, schooling,

father/guardian social economic status, and residential area, medium of schooling; tuition

trend, daily study hours and accommodation trend were independent variables (Ali,

Haider, Munir, Kahn, & Ahmed, 2013).

Students academic gain and learning performance is affected by numerous factor

including gender, teaching faculty, students schooling, father/guardian social economic

status, residential area of students, medium of instructions in schools, tuition trend, daily

study hour and accommodation as hostelries or day scholars. Many researchers conducted

detailed studies about the factors contributing student performance at different study

levels. Graetz (1995) stated, “A student educational success contingent heavily on social

status of student’s parents/guardians in the society”. Jayakumar (2015) cited that in their

society academic achievement is considered as a key criterion to judge one’s total

potentiality and capability. Academic achievement is seen as a student’s grade point

average in many academic settings (Surudhi, 2015).

Related Studies

Some studies have been tackled in various nations to determine the elements that

influence students' academic success at various levels. Jayanthi, Balakrishnan, Ching,

Latiff, & Nasirudeen (2014) revealed that a student's academic performance is influenced

by his or her desire in pursuing a subject, co-curricular activities, nationality, and gender.

Regular study hours, parent's socioeconomic position, and age all have a substantial

influence on academic succes (Ali et al, 2013). Academic achievement has also been

demonstrated to be influenced by a positive classroom atmosphere, with factors such as

the accessibility of teaching and learning resources, teacher capability, and the

environment in which a school is located (Moloko & Mhlauli, 2014). According to

Minnesota (2007), “The higher education performance is depending upon the academic

performance of graduate students.”

Methodology

This section discusses the research methodology and data analysis utilized to

satisfy the study's aims and objectives. It covers the research methodology, population

and sampling, instrumentation, and data collection procedures.

Research Design

The researcher will integrate quantitative research design employing descriptive-

survey design.
Descriptive research is a type of study that focuses on describing the features of

the population or subject under investigation. This technique emphasizes the “what" of

the study topic above the "why" of the research topic (Rebmann, 2020).

A research design is the 'procedures for collecting, analyzing, interpreting and

reporting data in research studies' (Creswell & Plano Clark 2007, p.58). It is the overall

plan for connecting the conceptual research problems with the pertinent (and achievable)

empirical research.

Population and Sampling

Objectives have always been the basis of research. The objectives, either directly

or indirectly, clarify the study subjects. The aims of the study clarify which group the

research findings can be applied to or for which group the findings can be generalized. In

study, this type of group is referred to as a population.(Shukla, 2020)

The population of this study consists of all 56 Grade 12 students in East Visayan

Adventist Academy. Therefore, there is no need for sampling technique.

Instrumentation

This study will use self-completion questionnaire as an instrument to determine

the level of the overall performance academic of the Grade 12 students in East Visayan

Adventist Academy.
