B SCOPE

This standard applies to silver and black corrosion protective coatings applied primarily to steel
fasteners but also to components used on Jaguar Land Rover vehicles.
The coatings are to withstand a maximum continuous service temperature of 200 °C. They are
effective in preventing galvanic corrosion of steel fasteners when in contact with aluminium. With
the selection of the correct passivate and topcoat, zinc nickel can also be used in electrical
grounding applications.

C OBJECT

The materials defined by this specification are corrosion protective coatings consisting of an
electrolytic plating of an alkaline zinc nickel, plus a trivalent chromium conversion with an
application of a top coat sealer.

D APPLICATION

It is recommended that Fastener Engineering is contacted for guidance as there are limitations as
which type of Zinc Nickel Coating is selected.

A1 Corrosion resistance plus a clear sealer for non - threaded fasteners and
components

A2 Corrosion resistance plus a clear sealer and integral lubricant for precision
threaded fasteners, self-tapping screws and thread forming screws for plastic

A3 Corrosion resistance plus a clear sealer and enhanced lubrication for thread
forming screws for use in both aluminium and steel.

A4 Corrosion resistance plus a black sealer and integral lubricant for precision
threaded fasteners, self-tapping screws and thread forming screws for plastic.

A5 Corrosion resistance plus a black sealer and enhanced lubrication for thread
screws for use in both aluminium and steel.
Note: A2 and A3 are suitable for grounding applications. A4 and A5 are both subject to
confirmation that they are both suitable for grounding.

F REQUIREMENTS

1 STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR PRODUCTION MATERIALS

Material suppliers and part manufacturers must conform to STJLR.51.5226.

2 LICENCED APPLICATOR QUALITY REQUIREMENTS

for chemical
usage, equipment and processing. Documented records are to be maintained.
The composition of the zinc nickel plating, passivation and water soluble lubricated sealer shall be

3 APPEARANCE

3.1 The plating shall be smooth, fine grained, adherent, and free from craters, blisters, nodules,
presence of burning and other defects. All workmanship shall conform to best practice for
high quality plating.

3.2 The base zinc nickel plating will have a metallic silver appearance prior to the application of
the passivation.

3.3 The passivate layer for A1, A2 and A3 will have an appearance of slight iridescence and
permitted colour variation but should be uniform when viewed without magnification.

3.4 The passivation layer for Both A4 and A5 will be black.

3.5 The sealers used for A2 and A3 will be a clear translucent film free from discontinuities.

4 COATING PROPERTIES

4.1 COMPOSITION

The alkaline base zinc nickel plating shall have a nickel content of between 10 to 16 % as
measured by calibrated X-
requirements.
The plating shall be a uniform, homogeneous alloy of zinc and nickel throughout the
thickness of the deposit and across high and low current densities of the part.
Zinc nickel alloy is the only deposit to be applied directly to the base material. The use of a
.
The sealers as per this standard do not require curing. They shall be dried in place utilising
any suitable drying method as appropriate.

4.2 THICKNESS

4.2.1 The electro plated zinc nickel layer shall have a thickness of 7 microns minimum
(typical overall thickness is 8 - 11 microns) and applies to all significant surfaces
unless specified on the engineering drawing. B In cases of dispute, the thickness
measurement referee method shall be metallographic sectioning per ISO 1463.

4.2.2 The passivation layer thickness is not subject to measurement but should be
between 50 Nanometres and 500 Nanometres.

4.2.3 The sealant layer thickness is not subject to measurement but should be greater
than 0.5 microns and less than 2 microns.
Note: The layer thickness shall be sufficient to meet both the corrosion and the
coefficient of friction requirements.

4.3 ADHESION

The coating shall withstand normal handling, storage and installation without flaking or
peeling.

4.3.1 BURNISHING TEST

There shall be no blistering, lifting or peeling of the electro plating from the base
substrate material following the burnishing test to ASTM B571.

4.3.2 HEAT QUENCH TEST

There shall be no blistering or chipping of the finish after heating coated parts to
200 °C ± 5 °C for 30 minutes ± 5 minutes and then quenching in water at ambient
temperature.

4.4 CORROSION RESISTANCE

Parts shall be tested in accordance with TPJLR.50.252 - Neutral Salt Spray (N.S.S.), both in
the as - plated, trivalent chromium and sealed condition (as processed condition) and after
being held at 120 °C ± 5 °C for 4 hours (baked condition) and shall meet the number of
specified in Table 1.
Small areas of ferrous corrosion is permitted on sharp edges, corners and internal recesses
due to reduced electro plating coverage. Recesses are generally defined as areas not in
contact with a 13 mm diameter sphere.
It is a characteristic of Zi Ni that it will produce thin and adherent layers of zinc oxide
products as it slowly sacrifices itself. Evidence of a white film or haze is permissible.
However, visible and voluminous oxidation is characterised as corrosion products, induced
by a neutral salt spray cabinet, which are clearly visible when wet and have affected surface
topography.
Parts must also conform to STJLR.60.5020.X100 Appendix A Clause F4.
