Annexure I

There are various weaving techniques practiced in different parts of India from past centuries. However, few
have gained popularity and few of the weaving techniques are at the verge of extinction. Khes is a traditional
cloth which was mainly used a a bedding and coverlet while sleeping. It was woven as part of trousseau by
the women of Punjab. In the Malwa region of Punjab, women have been weaving Khes traditionally. Cur -
rently very few families are left who are practicing this technique.

This Research Project is proposed In order to preserve the age long Khes weaving craft of Punjab which was
the source of income for many families till 20th century and now is at the verge of extinction.

Objectives:

1. To document the socio economic profile of the artisans engaged in the Khes weaving in rural regions of
Punjab.

2. To document the production process of Khes weaving in rural Malwa region including raw materials,
tools, techniques and motifs used

3. To develop a catalogue of motifs used for Khes weaving and prepare prototype samples of Khes

4. To connect the artisan group with the designer for collaboration


Annexure II

Scope of the Research Project

The detailed documentation of the traditional craft of Khes weaving will be an invaluable treasure for the
next generations. In identifying different rural areas where Khes weaving is practiced will also be helpful for
planning need based activities in those areas related to handloom and craft promotion. It would help rural
women involved in weaving to establish self help groups in villages to make Khes.

The upliftment of the artisans for Khes weaving especially women and thus keeping the craft alive.
It would help in reviving the traditional Khes weaving craft for contemporary use by the textile designers. It
would further inspire the designers and entrepreneurs to develop the products suitable to the contemporary
market.

Applying for the GI take for the Khes Craft of Punjab.

Methodology

• Locale of the Study - the project will be conducted in the rural Malwa region of Punjab and Identifying
the areas where Khes weaving is practiced.

• Research Design
- Documentation of the socio economic profile of the artisan
- Documentation of the production process of the Khes weaving
- Study the tools and equipment used in Khes making
- Formulation of Interview schedule with artisans
- The data collected through the interview schedule will further be supplemented by simple observations
and will be recorded. The technique will particularly useful for authenticating the information pertaining
to the types of raw material, dyes, chemicals and auxiliaries used as well as types of looms, accessories,
motifs, colours , designs etc. that are used for Khes weaving.
