YOUR NATURALIST- GUIDES*
NATURALISTS, GEOLOGISTS, LECTURERS AND EXPERIENCED GUIDES, OUR TEAM OF WELL- KNOWN PROFESSIONALS
ARE THE IDEAL COMPANIONS TO HAVE AS YOU EXPLORE THESE REMOTE LANDS, BETWEEN ALASKA AND
THE FAR NORTH.
Nicolas DUBREUIL - Expedition Leader
Nicolas fell in love with the region to such an extent that he wrote an ethnology
thesis on it. The Antarctic polar expanses have no secrets for this expedition leader.
Armed with his experience, Nicolas has been working with PONANT for more than
eleven years now, helping the captain plan routes. He is only too delighted to share
his memories and knowledge.
”Sublime Grimsey Island, where I organized a shore visit, I can still hear the cries of a
million arctic sterns gathered in the mist.”

Alain BIDART
Passionate about the Antarctic, sub-polar and polar regions, Alain works with the
International Polar Federation to make science more accessible to students and teachers.
He has travelled to the Antarctic as part of educational projects, spending 2 months in a
tent on an ice cap with a team of mountain climbers, and one month on an icebreaker
for the first ever observation of a total solar eclipse in the Southern Ocean. In order to
be able to share his general knowledge about the polar regions and his love of wildlife
observation, he is now a naturalist- guide and lecturer on our cruises.

Sophie FAVROLT
An Art Historian and qualified tour guide, Sophie developed an interest in the Vikings
and this led her to the Far North - Norway, Iceland and Greenland - as well as to
the countries of the Baltic Sea. For the last five years, her appreciation of extreme
destinations has seen her accompany our cruises to the Antarctic region.
“What moves me in the Arctic is the feeling that history is just as well preserved there as
Nature. What we see is exactly what the explorers of the 19th century looked upon.”

10 | SUMMER CRUISES 2016

Raphaël SANÉ - Expedition Leader
Raphaël is passionate about nature and holds a degree in hydrobiology. He has been
studying and working at nature conservation since the age of 15. In parallel, he has
participated in several research expeditions to the Arctic and in the peruvian jungle. After
working for naturalist associations for 7 years and taking part in several expeditions,
he is now expedition leader on our polar and tropical itineraries, where passengers
appreciate his contagious passion, his teaching style and his availability.

José SARICA
From an early age, protecting nature has been a true vocation for José. He trained as a
zoo therapist in Quebec then studied the belugas of Saint-Laurent. Fascinated by marine
mammals, he has published many articles in international scientific reviews and he has
been a naturalist- guide specializing in cetology on polar cruises since 2009.
”Once again today, emotion overwhelmed me when I thought of the huge fin of a right
whale emerging from the water just a stone’s throw from our Zodiac®, and waving
gently in the air as if to say hello...”.

Ombline CHABASSEUR
Ombline is passionate about the polar universe; she first lived in Finland then travelled
to many Arctic countries. She decided to become a hiking trip leader and spent many
summer seasons in the Far North, sharing her passion and her knowledge of the plant
and wildlife, history and customs of these remote countries. Aboard the ship, she will
gladly share her knowledge of this fragile and fascinating environment.
”I have never seen anything like it in all my expeditions. As the ship sailed closer,
a grandiose landscape appeared, so moving...”

THE ARCTIC FAR NORTH,
NORTHERN ADVENTURES TO THE
FAR REACHES OF POLAR LANDS...
If lands that fuel the passions and dreams of all adventurers and lovers of the great outdoors do
indeed exist, the Far North is surely such a place.

Taking a trip to the Arctic means heading for lands that are extreme, grandiose and far from the
most popular tourist itineraries. We’ll take you from Iceland to Spitsbergen, Greenland to Baffin
Bay, and of course along the mythical Northwest Passage which was long coveted by generations
of explorers, before reaching the rugged coastlines of the Russian Far East, between Kamchatka
and the Kuril Islands.

Journey to incredible pristine landmasses standing in the middle of a sea of ice, where the infinite
silence is broken only by the sounds of drifting icebergs as they crash, breaching humpback
whales, or a sudden flight of puffins, and where you might glimpse a majestic polar bear searching
for food along the ice... Sail in the wake of Jean-Baptiste CHARCOT and Paul-Émile VICTOR, and
muse at how fortunate you are to be able to enjoy this rare and fascinating experience.

Here, each Zodiac® outing is different. As you sail aboard L’Austral or Le Boréal, you’ll witness
landscapes that are ever changing according to the light, the mood of the sea and the colour of
the ice, which varies from pure white to deep blue. During your shore visits in a Zodiac® dinghy
in the company of our naturalist-guides, you’ll also have the chance to come face to face with
ancestral cultures, in the Inuit, Koryak or Chukchi villages, whose many traditions have been
carefully protected for generations.

Let your imagination roam free during this timeless voyage, and come and experience PONANT
hospitality in the heart of this frozen world where you’ll weave magical experiences and
unforgettable memories.

WHY THE ARCTIC?
FOR ICELAND, WHERE FIRE AND ICE ARE KING
As a land of extremes and contrasts on the edge of the Arctic Circle,
Iceland boasts a range of wild and ruggedly beautiful landscapes
where wind, stone, fire and ice mingle. Here, the volcanoes,
geysers, fjords and wild expanses create a unique, almost surreal
atmosphere where reigns a touch of intangible magic. This mythical
realm shaped by the earth’s convulsions and under the influence
of elves and arctic energy, unfurls an impressive colour palette,
ranging from the jet black of the obsidian to the various shades of
fawn in the rhyolite and the soft green of the meadows which run
alongside its cliffs. Discover the land we call “the island of volcanoes”,
which rose from the Ocean...

16 | SUMMER CRUISES 2016

FOR ITS EXCEPTIONAL WILDLIFE
At the tip of the world, where the sun wavers
between night and day, lies a magical land made
of ice, water, and polar deserts with rugged but
grandiose landscapes: the Arctic Continent. As
you cruise along its frigid waters or explore its
snow-covered lands, look out for a chance spotting
of the graceful narwhal, elegantly nicknamed
“unicorn of the sea” and renowned for its agility;
the musk oxen, whose astonishing silhouette is
covered in a thick woolly coat; the bearded seal,
recognisable by its small head covered in an
abundance of “vibrissae” ; or the polar bear, the
undisputed lord of the ice.

FOR THE PRIMITIVE BEAUTY OF

KAMCHATKA
The Kamchatka is the archetype of wild lands
and is one of the great unspoiled regions of the
world. Located in the heart of the Far East’s remote
regions, in this vast volcanic peninsula nature puts
on a powerful and infinitely beautiful show for its
visitors. Forged over the centuries by fire, earth and
ocean, like a jewel in its precious setting, this pristine
paradise reveals unspoiled nature, with landscapes
including a chain of over 200 volcanoes, acid lakes,
geysers, and old- growth forest. An exceptional
spectacle awaits you, set against a backdrop of
orange- tinged taiga, in the heart of the legendary
brown bear’s kingdom.

FOR SHARING ETHNIC TRADITIONS

There are peoples for whom we have an enduring
fascination, for their simple way of life which
continues as if the modern world had no bearing
on it... During your cruise in the Arctic Far North,
discover the Inuit people, the last descendants of
the Arctic, still living to the rhythm of their culture
and their art, and the Koryak people, who make
a living from fishing and raising reindeer. Through
these timeless encounters, discover ethnic groups
with unique traditions, keepers of ancestral beliefs
and traditions.

FOR THE MAGICAL GREENLAND

Inhale, exhale... Discovering the vast island of Greenland means
immersing yourself in a world of ice, where hard land must stay slender
and beautiful if it hopes to be granted the right to stay. Still almost
unknown just a century ago, the east coast of this island remains a
region of great authenticity and majesty. Boasting stunningly beautiful
and authentic landscapes ranging from winding fjords to twisting
canyons, crystal- clear cascades and huge glaciers, it is also home to an
abundant wildlife, including the elegant humpback whale, the unusual
narwhal and the majestic polar bear in its snow-white fur. Aboard
Le Soléal, set off to discover this icy continent, the biggest National
Park in the world today, where each setting hides an unforgettable
adventure.

SAILING TO THE HEART OF SPITSBERGEN

Remote, mysterious, authentic... The history of the Svalbard Islands
is exceptionally rich. Located on the southern fringe of the Arctic
Ocean and shaped by ice, wind and ocean, Spitsbergen, also called
“the island with a thousand and one names”, was once inhabited by
the Inuit and is now the biggest national park in the world. During
your cruise, your excursions on land will have you following in the
footsteps of the great explorers and whale hunters of old, to discover
extraordinary landscapes composed of snow- covered peaks and
sheer cliffs that throw themselves into fjords scattered with icebergs.
The days at sea will be interspersed with unusual ports of call and trips
in Zodiac® dinghies at the first light of dawn in the hopes of spotting
the lord of the ice, the solitary polar bear.

NY ALESUND
As you cruise along the west coast of Spitsbergen, you’ll discover
landscapes composed of fjords with vertiginous cliff faces and
gigantic glaciers, set against a decor of mountains standing tall
against the blue of the horizon. During your cruise, we invite you
to follow in the footsteps of the first men to have explored these
parts after setting sail from the coast of Norway, and discover
Ny Alesund, a former mining town that has been transformed into
a scientific research station. Founded in 1916, this small town was
the departure point for many Arctic expeditions, including those of
the famous explorer Roald AMUNDSEN. Let your imagination run
free during this day of discovery at the heart of an extraordinary
naturally-wild environment.

THE AURORA BOREALIS

« It is impossible to witness such a beautiful phenomenon without a
sense of awe », wrote Robert SCOTT, an early 20th century polar
explorer. According to Viking legend, the aurora borealis are caused
by the armor of the Valkyrie, which emits a strange flickering light as
these warrior maidens fly off towards the palace of Odin. Scientific
theory explains that these mysterious phenomena, named after Aurora,
the goddess of dawn in roman mythology, and occurring in the Far
North appear when solar wind particles collide with the gases in
the earth’s high atmosphere, creating a dazzling explosion of colors.
These rainbows of orange, purple and emerald green dance across
the night sky. They are often observed onboard of our ships at this time
of the year.

WILDLIFE IN BAFFIN SEA

Baffin Sea boasts unique landscapes: deserts of ice and snow swept
by winds from another era, and unspoiled virgin lands, home to
exceptional wildlife. During your cruise, you might spot some
elegant humpback whales or the impressive narwhal, also known
as “the unicorn of the sea”. The teeth of this strange cetacean have
impressive attributes and shapes. The narwhal is recognisable by
the long ivory tusk on its head. On land, you’ll be able to seek out
the mysterious polar bear. A symbol of the power and fragility of
the Far North, this mighty mammal is a source of fascination due
to its immaculate fur, its calm elegance and its air of mystery.

AKPATOK
Nestled into Ungava Bay, Akpatok is an inhabited island whose
cliffs soar against the milky waters of the bay. The location is
startlingly impressive, animated by the swoops and cries of the
thousands of migratory arctic birds. It’s also one of the walrus’s
favourite haunts and a traditional hunting ground for local Inuit.
Here is an excerpt from a naturalist guide, in summer 2011:
« At the base of the cliff which forms a natural border for Akpatok, the
first bear appeared, like an actor coming onto a stage and, in the
most theatrical manner, he struck a pose for the zoom lenses of the
watching cameras. A more modest female and her cub strolled across
the landscape... nearby, the prehistoric- looking musk appear on their
dainty legs and at the cliff tops, hundreds of thousands of guillemots
provide an unexpected ‘fireworks’ display, fizzing about the skies and
calling wildly.»

TORNGAT MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

“At the Northern extremity of the Labrador coast, a range of high
barren mountains with sharp precipices extending inland from the
sea was known to traditional Inuit as the abode of the master spirit
in their mythology.” This is how Ernest William HAWKES, a famous
american anthropologist, described the natural wonders of Torngat
Mountains National Park. The territory of the Inuit for millions of
years, this park offers the possibility to observe such a wide range
of Mother Nature’s startling creations: steep mountains, bare and
desolate valleys covered in rocky tundra, deep-water fjords...
Many boreal and arctic species live here, such as the legendary
caribou and the intimidating tundra black bear.

L’Austral’s route will take you to the heart of the fjords of North-West
Iceland, a wild land of lost valleys and steep cliffs, where man
struggles to survive. In this very isolated region we find the Isafjördur
fjord, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the country, mainly for
its relief, forged by many very ancient basaltic flows. The town of
Isafjördur, which nestles at the back of its fjord, between imposing
mountains, is a delightful little town that lives exclusively from fishing.
The capital of the Western fjords, its old wooden houses bear witness
to its past as a major fishing port. With its relief and its bold and raw
colors, Iceland offers lovers of wide open spaces an endless variety of
unlimited pleasures.

From Reykjavik, set off on an exceptional excursion into the

THE MAGICAL GREENLAND

There are places whose primeval beauty conjures emotions of a rare
intensity: Greenland, this remote and other-worldly island of frozen
expanses, is one such example. Still almost unknown just a century
ago, the East coast of Greenland remains a region of great authenticity
and majesty and currently forms the largest National Park in the world.
Here, when the ice breaks up and the granite peaks shed their white
mantle for a brief Summer, a spellbinding world of bewitching power
and beauty emerges. In a silence broken only by the cracking of
icebergs, L’Austral will forge a path to reveal to you the landscapes
of this pristine and luminous land. Come aboard for an exceptional
journey where each stop and visit is a timeless experience.

YOUR EVENING CRUISE AMONG THE ICEBERGS

You’ll cruise through the heart of landscapes heavily punctuated
with vertical lines and dotted with vertiginous cliffs and
cathedral-like icy giants. When, as you admire them from the
deck of L’Austral, these majestic mountains of ice tower over you
and the sun shines upon them like a great floodlight, a palette of
colors will reflect their extraordinary beauty: deep blue, white,
turquoise, or as transparent as pure crystal. Nature’s creative
genius will reveal itself before your very eyes in the form of
an incredible confusion of ice sculptures. Icebergs are natural
works of art, and they result from an accumulation of snow that
is compressed over thousands of years. They set the backdrop
for a timeless adventure.

DISCOVER A MYTHICAL PASSAGE

For four hundred years, finding the invisible Northwest Passage
remained a dream, a myth, a challenge, but it had to be done at
all costs. During this quest, many ships, sailors and explorers were
trapped by the ice and storms of the Canadian Far North and
numerous unknown shores were identified. But the passage itself, the
maze of islands, channels and gulfs obstructed by ice floe, remained
unattainable. Even the illustrious Captain COOK himself only found
walls of icebergs and concluded that the existence of this passage
was nothing more than a “geographical fantasy”. It wasn’t until June
1903 that the norwegian explorer Roald AMUNDSEN undertook his
own search. After three years of making slow and perilous progress in
extreme climatic conditions, his ship, the Gjoa, finally sailed into open
sea... on the other side of the Earth. The Northwest Passage really did
exist.

LITTLE DIOMEDE
“We crossed the Bering Strait tonight! Russia is now on starboard
side and the USA on port side, with the International Date Line
passing in between! In the morning, we disembark on Little
Diomede. We meet a small community of around 70 Inupiak
inhabitants. They welcome us and guide us through the 2 main
streets of their village composed by few tens of stilt houses. They
give us a lot of interesting information about their way of life and
activities, mainly hunting and fishing. After a visit of the school and
a show of dance, we were really sad to leave this fantastic place
that appeared to be deeply touching all of us…”

THE KURIL ISLANDS

Lying in the cool waters of the Northern Pacific, the Kuril Islands
extend over more than a thousand kilometers South of the tip of the
Kamchatka Peninsula. Located on the Pacific ring, the archipelago
also known as "The Northern Ring of fire" boasts timeless landscapes.
Belonging to Russia and extending to the North of the japanese island
of Hokkaido, this archipelago is composed of sixteen islands and a
few islets. In the heart of this unique part of the world, you will discover
the thermal springs and steam jets that create a magical atmosphere
at the foot of the Baransky Volcano. Nature has generously bestowed
upon these islands an impressive number of rivers, sparkling waterfalls,
majestic volcanoes, lava deserts and crater lakes. Do not miss this
unique environment where photographers and well-travelled visitors
are bound to experience a profusion of emotions.

WILDLIFE IN THE KURIL ISLANDS

Extending over more than a thousand kilometres between Russia
and Japan, the Kuril Islands offer a unique environment that seems
to stretch on for eternity, an Eden where many animal species have
taken up residence. Graceful reindeer in grey coats roam across
the wild landscapes of the inland tundra, while powerful walruses
gather together on the black sand beaches. The latter can weigh
more than a tonne and love to nap in the sunshine. A particularly
loyal animal, it prefers to live in groups and its communication is
an art form. The cries and barks of walruses can be compared to
a fervent song that rings out across the shores, ice floes and other
ice banks where it likes to linger.

ATLASOV ISLAND
A vast chain of volcanic islands separating the Sea of Okhotsk
from the Pacific Ocean, the Kuril Islands are fascinating for their
primitive and authentic beauty. Considered to be one of the
most remote regions in the world, this “Ring of Fire” boasts over
32 volcanoes - some of which are still active - and pristine, unspoilt
nature whose landscapes could easily be mistaken for those that
covered Earth several million years ago. During your cruise,
we offer you the chance to discover this strange archipelago
and, more particularly, the small island of Atlasov. Named after
the Russian explorer Vladimir ATLASOV, it was the first of the
Kuril Islands to be discovered in the 17th century. With its many For more information and detailed descriptions of your

INTO THE ARCTIC

• A polar parka will be offered upon your arrival on board the ship for all expedition programs where the logo “parka” appears. We also kindly ask you to
follow the dress-code instruction you will find with your travel documents. Don’t hesitate to contact us if needed.
• For Expedition cruises, a reasonable level of mobility is required to enjoy this expedition. We will ask you to return to our Medical Department, no later than
40 days prior your embarkation; a medical form completed with your physician between 90 and 45 days prior your departure. This is essential for security
regulations in polar and/or isolated zones. If information mentioned in the questionnaire is not in accordance with reality, embarkation can be denied with
no recourse against.
• Expeditions programs include activities such as Zodiac® outings (sometimes with “wet landing“), moderate walks to more active hikes. All this accompanied
by your expedition team of naturalist guides. Certain Zodiac® outings will not allow for landings just cruising. Landings will depend on weather conditions,
position of ice and winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time.
• Travelling to polar/isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. The raw beauty and untouched wilderness offer an unusual chance to experience a place
where there is little evidence of human presence. Inevitably, there are some consequences that come with such remoteness: please remember that you are
far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is highly expensive. Without the necessary medical coverage, all expenses will have
to be immediately paid from with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe a full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully
and be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive.

• Taking into consideration the unusual and exceptional character of expedition itineraries, the calls shown are an indication only. The final route will be
confirmed by the Captain and Expedition Leader, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. Their
decision will be subject to that of local authorities and the expert pilots present on board during the navigation in polar and /or isolated zones.

ALASKA,
PRISTINE AND WILD
“Dark spruce forest frowned on either side the frozen waterway. The trees had been
stripped by a recent wind of their white covering of snow, and they seemed to lean towards
each other, black and ominous, in the fading light. A vast silence reigned over the land.”
Excerpt from Jack LONDON’S novel, White Fang.

The great outdoors, vast, remote expanses and gigantic glaciers of Alaska have inspired numerous
novelists and captivated many an adventurer...

Aboard Le Soléal, we invite you to cruise along the east coast of Alaska, whose “Inside Passage”
was crafted by sculpting imposing ice tongues to make room for vertiginous fjords. Here, nature
is shaped by glaciers, coniferous forests, and myriad islands and islets where the soft light of the
midnight sun lights up the sky and the horizon. Do not miss this opportunity to discover Juneau,
the alaskan capital long inhabited by the Tlingit Indians, or Skagway and Haines, over whose
colorful houses flies the majestic bald eagle.

The “Expedition” itineraries will introduce adventure seekers to wild and unspoiled nature between
Alaska and Eastern Siberia, during unique stopovers, hikes, or daily outings in a Zodiac® dinghy.

Get set for an exciting adventure.

WHY ALASKA?
FOR VOLCANIC PRIBILOF ISLANDS
Part of the Earth’s History was written between Alaska and Russia.
Aboard Le Soléal, we invite you to discover the origins of the world: a
unique environment that seems to stretch out to infinity. Lost in the middle
of the Bering Sea, the Pribilof archipelago is made up of four volcanic
islands where nature has crafted exquisitely beautiful landscapes.
Here, on the islands of Saint Paul and Saint George, you will find
majestic volcanoes, lava deserts and crater lakes, offering travelers a
magnificent vantage point from which to observe a fauna composed
almost exclusively of fur seals. The archipelago is also renowned as a
paradise for birds, especially on Saint Paul, as more than 240 different
species of seabirds take flight from the top of its majestic cliff.

40 | SUMMER CRUISES 2016

TO FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS
OF GREAT EXPLORERS
After the discovery of Alaska at the end of the 18th
century, Russian trappers roamed the land, hunting
sea otters and selling their highly desirable fur at
premium prices. From Skagway, it is still possible
to distinguish the traces of the first adventurers who,
seeking fortune and glory, followed the Chilkoot
Trail, the gateway to the mythical Gold Rush where
the first gold deposits were discovered in August
1896. Follow in the footsteps of these pioneers who
attempted to tame this wild region, a land where the
excitement and romance of bygone days still linger in
every bend of the trail.

FOR ITS WILD AND PROTECTED

FAUNA
In the heart of imposing landscapes where nature
reigns supreme, Alaska will surprise you with its
diversity and exceptional wildlife. The Kodiak bear
has established its hunting territory along the coasts
of the Kodiak Peninsula, and wolves and caribous
can be spotted in sub-Arctic forest. During your shore
visits, don’t forget to look skywards to admire the
majestic flight of a very special bird of prey: the bald
eagle, or to observe the mischievous acrobatics of a
majestic humpback whale. Come and discover this
exceptional natural environment, home to wild and
protected fauna.

FOR ITS AMERICAN

INDIAN CULTURE
Alaska has been peopled by American Indian tribes
for thousands of years. Despite successive waves of
colonization, their culture has survived through the
ages and forms a lasting element of the Alaskan
way of life. You will visit Ketchikan and Totem Bight
State Park, home to many Totem Poles produced
by the Tlingit Indians. Fine cedar sculptures by the
Haïda tribe can be found next to imposing traditional
homes, you will discover the culture and traditions of
these peoples as your cruise progresses.

FOR THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS AND WRANGEL

ISLAND RESERVE
Off the coast of Eastern Siberia, between snow-covered peaks,
vast tundra plains, translucent lakes and sheer cliffs, Wrangel Island
Reserve will reveal protected and as yet unspoiled nature. Listed as
a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island is a rare ecosystem with
unique vegetation not found anywhere else, as well as exceptional
fauna. Farther south, to the west of Alaska, the Aleutian Islands form
an elongated archipelago, marking the boundary between the Pacific
Ocean and the Bering Sea. This natural bridge between Kamchatka
and Alaska is formed by a string of over 300 mountainous islands,
which extend in an arc over a distance of nearly 2,000 km.

the country, surrounded by a flotilla of islets and high tree-covered
mountains. A former Russian colony, this is the place where the transfer
of property was signed between the representatives of the Tsar and
the United States government when the land was seceded in 1867. A
high temple of history, we still find traces of its indigenous inhabitants,
the American Indian Tlingit tribes and their many totems, curious

Culture lovers, nature lovers and fans of historical sites, Sitka will be

KETCHIKAN - LES MISTY FJORDS

Known as Alaska’s “First City” due to its prime location on the
southernmost tip of the famous “Interior Passage”, travelers find
Ketchikan a perfect introduction to the majestic beauty of this region.
When Le Soléal drops anchor here, discover this charming little city and
its colorful stilt houses, endowed with an unspoilt nature, an abundant
fishing and, above all, an American Indian culture which is still very
present. Not far from the town of Ketchikan, at the heart of a lush
forest of centenarian sequoias, the natural, unspoiled beauty of Misty
Fjords will appear before you from the outer decks of Le Soléal. These
mist-topped fjords, listed as a National Monument, take their name from
the silhouettes of clouds that often cover them, giving them a magical
and unreal air. To have a different look on these exceptional sites, you
will have the possibility of flying over these fjords in a hydroplane.
Do not miss this unique experience, blending nature and tradition.

SAILING IN TRACY ARM FJORD

Located to the south of Juneau, Tracy Arm Fjord is probably
Alaska’s most beautiful fjord. The waterfalls which cascade down
granite blocks, the emerald green water, the imposing glaciers,
and the icebergs that stand as though chiselled from crystal cloth,
give this place an unusual atmosphere. Tracy Arm is over 30 miles
long and nearly a quarter of it is covered in ice. It surrounds some
of Alaska’s largest glaciers, including the twin Sawyer Glaciers,
lined with tall mountains towering at over 2,100 metres above the
azure blue sea. During your cruise, you may catch a glimpse of
endemic species such as the magnificent bald eagle, the fur seal,
or the majestic-looking orca. This is without a doubt one of the
most beautiful places in Alaska.

SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR EXPEDITION CRUISES

ED

Their
decision will be subject to that of local authorities and the expert pilots present on board during the navigation in polar and /or isolated zones.

of taupe, grey, white, and natural wood gives these ships a unique style that
is both contemporary and inviting. Fitted with 132 carefully designed cabins
and suites, all with a sea view, Le Boréal, L’Austral and Le Soléal are perfectly
in harmony with PONANT’s policy of offering all passengers exacting levels of
service and real contact with the crew, and have the advantage of being able to
sail to exceptional destinations.
And because we are convinced that a responsible approach is required in our
quest for excellence, PONANT chose to equip its sistership with efficient “green”
equipment. As a result, Le Soléal, as Le Boréal, L’Austral and Le Lyrial, has been
awarded the international “Clean Ship” label.

Welcome aboard.
