REINFORCED CONCRETE ELEMENTS

Day/Date : Thursday, 25 May 2023

Due Date : Thursday, 26 May 2023
(No later than 11:00 AM)
Lecturer : Dr Asdam Tambusay

COURSEWORK #2

A reinforced concrete column element is subjected to the following ultimate

factored forces:

- Axial, Nu = 1500 kN
- Moment in x direction, Mx = 500 kNm
- Moment in y direction, My = 250 kNm
- Shear, Vu = 750 kN
- Torsion, Tu = 200 kNm

Determine an appropriate column size and the required longitudinal,

transversal, confinement, and torsion reinforcing bars as per ACI or
AASTHO design code. Assume fy = 420 MPa, f’c = 35 MPa, normal-weight
concrete, and column heights of 3.5 m. Additionally, also assume that the
M-N interaction is based on the ultimate forces, although in reality, it is not.

Sketch the reinforcement layout in the cross-section.

The answer should be written manually, and all the equations used to solve
the problems need to be presented as well.
