IKEA
Swedish company
By Robert Lewis • Edit History

IKEA is a multinational conglomerate that designs and sells

ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchen appliances and home
accessories. IKEA specializes in furniture that come in compact
“flat-pack” form – customers assemble IKEA’s beds, desks, chairs
and cabinets at home. IKEA was founded in Sweden in 1943 by 17-
year-old Ingvar Kamprad.

“IKEA” is an acronym that consists of the founder's initials (Ingvar Kamprad), and
the initial letters of his family’s farm (Elmtaryd) and his home village (Agunnaryd)
in Sweden. IKEA is primarily known for its modernist designs for various types of
appliances and furniture. Its interior design work is often associated with an eco-
friendly simplicity. In addition, the firm is known for its attention to cost control,
operational details, and continuous product development. IKEA is the world’s
largest seller of furniture, operating more than 300 stores around the world.
