Hoch created this piece while in a relationship with Raoul
Hausmann, a Viennese artist. He was married but refused to leave
his wife for her. This work is supposed to represent a conventional
relationship of enraptured love between a man & woman. Although
this piece conveys a "normal" relationship, hers were anything but.
After leaving Hausmann for being abusive, she entered a
relationship with Dutch writer & linguist Til Burgman from
1926-1929.
● Hoch was a radical feminist, she
believed in a woman's reproductive
rights.
● she was also a member of the Berlin
Dada group
● The Berlin Dada group "supported"
women's right but were reluctant to
include a woman in their ranks, Hans
Richter, an influential member,
described Hoch's contribution to the
Dada movement as the "sandwiches,
beer and coffee she managed
somehow to conjure up despite the
shortage of money."

Women were a central theme in her work.

In this particular piece she references the
hypocrisy of the Berlin Dada group and
German society as a whole.
