Friendship and Romance

1) It is very important to set goals of one’s friendship because just like any other activity maintaining
friendship must also have certain objectives. Though interacting with a friend is not a task. It is our
duty to maintain healthy relationship with all our friends irrespective of differences in our social status,
ages and viewpoints. Goals like, before expecting from one’s friends, one should be a good friend
himself helps in achieving the objectives of friendship.

Other goals like never loosing a friend’s trust, allowing him his personal space and always being there
in time of need also strengthens the friendship. A friend is someone in whom we confide in and who
we expect to be with us in thick and thin. Some of the features of a good friend are that he never
takes you for granted and give you as much importance as you give him. He always understands.
This means even if you have done something wrong you can expect him to be there for you. He
always remembers what he has promised you.

He always spends quality time with you but also allows you to have your own personal life. Though he
is there for you all the time he is never overindulgent or interfering. If a person is able to maintain
these features with another person and vice versa over the years, then they can be considered
experts in the art of friendship. 2a) A lover may not have all the features of a good friend but his
relationship is a degree ahead of friendship. The lovers are sexually attracted to each other. A friend
is different from a lover, as he does not have sexual interests in his friend.

Two people must have romance between them to be defined as lovers but friendship can be
maintained without any romantic inclinations. 2b) There is a great difference between friends and
relatives. We are not fortunate enough to choose our relatives. We have to be content with relatives
who have been bestowed to us by faith. But friends are those people whom we choose. They are the
people with whom we love to spend our time. They are not attached to us by birth but are those with
whom we naturally gelled and got interested in when we grew older.

A relative or lover cannot be defined, as a friend because the intimacy we share with a lover is more
intense than the intimacy we share with our friends or relatives. Most of the times, barring our
immediate family members, the intimacy that we share with our friends is a degree ahead of what we
share with our relatives. So the position of a friend is between a lover and a relative. It is lower than a
lover and higher than a relative. Part 11 1) I would like to summarize the story of the lovers of the
movie ‘Titanic’. They met in a star cruise.

While the girl was travelling in the area meant for the high class travellers. The boy was in the lower
class area. They met and it was instant attraction for them. It was not a completely sexual attraction
but romance bloomed between them. Where there is romance there are traces of sexual attraction as
well. Her beauty mesmerized the boy while the girl found him handsome, lovable and understanding.
He was a ray of hope and a means of escaping from an unwanted marriage that was soon going to
take place. They even made love with each other.

If their attraction had been purely physical they would have drifted away after whetting their sexual
desires. But their love was very intense. Soon after their blissful communion the ship in which they
were travelling, started sinking down. Had they not loved each other; they would have run for their
lives without caring for the other one. But they did not want to loose each other at any cost. 2) There
are many motives of romantically pursuing a person. One motive can be to obtain sexual satisfaction
through the other person.

The other reason can be to establish family bonds. One can also pursue the other person
romantically in order to increase one’s social status and resources. Where there is romance, thinking
of sexual satisfaction is very natural. It is also natural to think of beginning a family together. In
circumstances when love is one sided a person pursues another person to increase his resources
and social status. Sometimes even from both sides the motive can be to make the financial condition
better. This type of romance is not done from heart but from head.

In the movie ‘Titanic’, the motive behind the romance of the protagonists was to get sexual
satisfaction and to establish family bonds. The couple was dreaming of starting a family together till
the very end of the movie when the boy died. 3) Florence Kelley was a hero who saved millions of
children from child labor. When she was just 12 years old, her father took her to a glass factory. In
that factory she found that many children were working in dangerous situation with pots of acids in
their hands. She was very angry and moved by this incident.

This incident became an inspiration for her to fight against child labor. This issue was always there in
her mind and years later when she entered adulthood, she wrote a book named ‘Our Toiling
Children’. To spread message about this merciless act, she even wrote reports and gave speeches
on this issue. She was so involved with this cause that till date she is known as the leader fighting
against child labor. With her diligent effort, the problem of child labor was solved in America in 1890’s.
In this real life story, there is no personal relationship between the hero and the victims.

Yet the hero empathized so much for the victims and fought for the betterment of their lives. This
selfless relationship is above all the relationships that an individual maintains in his life. It was a
relationship of humanity. Just like our other relationships we should always try to keep this
relationship alive too.
