The extremely hot and humid weather that occurs in the United States in July and August is
commonly called the “dogs days” of summer. This name comes from the star Sirius, which is
known as the Dog Star. Sirius is the brightest visible star, and in the hot summer months it
rises in the east at approximately the same time as the Sun. As ancient people saw this star
rising with the Sun when the weather was at its hottest, they believed that Sirius was the
cause of the additional heat; they believed that this bright star added its heat to the heat of
the Sun, and these two together made summer weather so unbearably hot.
6. The topic of this passage is...
A. How dogs like to play during the summer
B. The causes of hot and humid weather
C. Why the hot summer days are known as the “dog days”
D. The days that dogs prefer

The term “primitive art” has been used in a variety of ways to describe works and
styles of art. One way that this term has been used is to describe the early period within the
development of a certain style of art. Another way that this term has been used is to
describe artists who have received little professional training and who demonstrate a
nontraditional naiveté in their work.
A wonderful example of this second type of primitive artist is Grandma Moses, who
spent all her life living on a farm and working at tasks normally associated with farm life. She
did not begin painting until she reached the age of seventy-six, when she switched to
painting from embroidery because the arthritis in her hands made embroidery too difficult.
Totally without formal education in art, she began creating panoramic images of everyday
life on the farm that have achieved international fame.

8. The subject of this passage is

A. an example of one of the types of primitive art
B. Grandma Moses’s life on the farm
C. how primitive art differs from formal art
D. Grandma Moses’s primitive life-style

9. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
A. Grandma Moses spent her life on a farm
B. Art critics cannot come to any agreement on a definition of primitive art.
C. Grandma Moses is one type of primitive artist because of her lack of formal
training.
D. Many artists receive little professional training.

If You’re sitting in a coffee shop, tapping away on your laptop, feeling safe from
hackers because you didn’t connect to the shops wifi, think again. The guys maybe able to
see what you’re doing just by analyzing the low-power electronic signals your laptop emits
even when it is not connected to the Internet. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of
Technology are investigating where these information “leaks” originate so they can help
hardware and software designers develop strategies to plug them. By studying emissions
from multiple computers, the researchers have developed a metric for measuringthe
strength of the leaks-known technically as “side-channel signal”- to help prioritize security
efforts.
Side-channel emissions can be measured several feet away from an operating
computer using a variety 0f spying methods. Electromagnetic emissions can be received
using antennas hidden in a briefcase, for instance. Acoustic emissions sounds produced by
electronic components such as capacitors can be picked up by microphones hidden beneath
tables, information on power fluctuations, which can help hackers determine what the
computer is doing, can be measured by fake battery chargers plugged into power outlets
adjacent to a laptop’s power converter.

Currently, there is no mention in the open literature of hackers using side-channel

attacks, but the researchers believe it’s only a matter of time before that happens. The
potential risks of side-channel emissions have been reported over the years, but not all the
levels of detail being studied by the Georgia Tech researchers.

12. According to the passage, hackers can steal information by using the following tools
EXCEPT...
A. Artificial battery chargers
B. Earphones hidden in a wallet
C. Antennas hidden in a briefcase
D. Microphones hidden beneath tables
E. Fake power chargers plugged into power outlets
The Hawaiian language is a melodious language in which all words are derived from
an alphabet of only twelve letters, the five vowels a, e, i, o, u and the seven consonants h,
k, l, m, n, p, w. Each syllable in the language ends in a vowel, and two consonants never
appear together, so vowels have a much higher frequency in the Hawaiian language than
they do in English.
This musical-sounding language can be heard regularly by visitors to the islands. Most
Hawaiian speak English, but it is quite common to hear English that is liberally spiced with
words and expressions from the traditional language of the culture. A visitor may be
greeted with the expression aloha and may be referred to as a malihini because he is a
newcomer to the island. The visitor may attend an outside luau where everyone eats too
much and be invited afterwards to dance hula.
13. Which of the following is probably NOT a Hawaiian word:
A. mahalo
B. mahimahi
C. meklea
D. moana
Everyone likes to group thimngs. Language students group word as verbs, nouns
and so on; collections of words are classified as phrases, or clauses, or sentences,
and these again are reclassified according to their function. In the same way,
botanistsw classify plants as algae, or fungi, or gymnosperms, etc. Zoologysts
classify animals as vertrebrates and investibrates. The vetrebrates can be further
classified as mammals, reptiler, birds, fish, etc. Classification enables us to keep
hold of more information and, if it is based on the right data, enables us to
understand better the ideas we are studying.

Chemists are no exception. The chemical classification of materials, if it is based on

a good system, should enable us to understand better the many substances which
exist in our word. What is to be the basis of our classification? Perhaps the most
obvious one is appearance. Materials could be classified as solid, liquid or gas with
some mixed types as, for example, mud being solid/liquid material and steam a
liquid/gas material. Appearance could enable us to subdivide our main
classification groups a little further; the solid may be green, or black, powdery or
crystalline; the liquid may be colored, oily, thick, or free flowing; the gas may be
colored. However, we soon realize that many probably quite different materials
have the same appearance. Both air and the deadly carbon-monoxide gas, are
colorless, odorless gases, but we would not like to group them as the same thing.
Many different liquids are colorless, water-like materials.
14. The sentences “Chemist are no exception” (par. 2 line 1) could possibly be
restated as
A. Chemical materials can also be put into classification
B. Classification of chemical materials is without exception
C. Chemists may also classify materials using certain criteria
D. When appearance is the basis, chemists are not involved
E. In material classification, chemicals should not be included

15. The paragraph following the passage most likely deals with the classification of...
A. Flora and fauna
B. Human and sounds
C. Liquids and gases
D. Human behaviours
E. Words and phrases
16. The paragaph preceding the passage most likely deals with...

In English, there are many different kinds of expressions that people use to give a name
to anything whose name is unknown or momentarily forgotten. The word gadget is one
such word. It was first used by British sailors in the 1850s and probably came from the
French word gachette, which was a small hook. In everyday use, the word has a more
general meaning. Other words are also used to give a name to something unnamed or
unknown, and these words tend to be somewhat imaginative. Some of the more
commonly used expressions are a what-d’ye-call-it, a whatsis, a thingamabob, a
thingamajig, a doodad, or a doohickey.
17. Which of the following is NOT mentoned in the passage as an expression for
something that is not known?
A. A what-is-it
B. A gadget
C. A thingamabob
D. A doohickey
The Florida Keys are a beautiful chain of almost 1,000 coral and limestone islands
These islands form an arc that heads first southwest and then west from the
mainland. U.S. Highway 1, called the Overseas Highway connects the main islands in
the chain. On this highway, it is necessary to cross 42 bridges over the ocean to cover
the 159 miles from Miami on the mainland, to Key West the farthest island on the
highway and the southernmost city in the United States.
18. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the Florida Keys?

C. The Florida Keys are in the shape of an arc
D. The Florida Keys are not all inhabited

19. Which of the following is NOT tue about U.S. Highway 1?

A. It is also known as the Overseas Highway
B. It joins all of the islands in the Florida Keys

20. Blood pressure measurement has two components: systolic and diastolic.
Systolic pressure is taken when the heart is contracting to pump blood;
diastolic pressure is taken when the heart is resting between beats. In the
usual blood pressure reading, the systolic measurement is given first and
is the higher of the two.
Normal blood pressure is a systolic measurement of 140, and when the
systolic pressure is 160 or higher, then hypertension exists. Systolic
pressure between 140 and 160 indicates borderline hypertension.

Which the following is NOT true about systolic blood pressure?

(A) It is taken during the contraction of the heart.
(B) It is usually given first in a blood pressure reading.
(C) A normal systolic measurement is 140.
(D) Hypertension exists when the systolic pressure is below 140.
