I.CHARACTERIZATION OF LEAD ROLE AND DESCRIPTIONS

Lolita Rodriguez as Pura
Charito Solis as Emilia
Rio Locsin as Erlinda
Ric Rodrigo as Manoling
Raul Aragon as Alex
Laurice Guillen as Thelma
Lorli Villanueva as Tiya

II.SETTINGS OF THE STORY/ BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE STORY (GIST)

Pura (Lolita Rodriguez) returns to her hometown from the US to
visit her ailing father. She fled to the US twenty years ago to
escape the pain of seeing her boyfriend wed her half-sister,
Emilia (Charito Solis).

With Pura's return, old wounds open and the sibling rivalry is
revived between her and Emilia, which sets the household astir.

III.HIGHLIGHTS/ SIDELIGHTS OF THE STORY

The highlights of the story for me are:
The scene Pura talked with Manoling where she recounts her pain
and got over it by seeing the reality of the man she can’t get
over with.
The initial confrontation between Pura and Emilia after Sunday’s
event, where Pura talks to Emilia about the house and Emilia
enforcing her right as a legitimate child.
The final confrontation between Pura and Emilia in their father’s
wake after Emilia’s daughter, Erlinda, failed to run away with his
lover, Alex.
The scene where Emilia tells Pura of her realization about love
and happiness. Then, the two silently reconciles.

IV.DRAMATIC INCONSISTENCIES IN THE STORY

The ending was a bit abrupt for me. After the final big and
intense confrontation between the two in their father’s wake, we
see them already reconciling, which is a bit inconsistent for me.

I also think that the practical issues brought up like the selling
of the house, Erlinda’s future, and Pura’s plan to settle back in
the Philippines were left hanging in the end.

V.FILM CRITIC APPRAISAL OF THE MOVIE

The movie is very relatable, especially on the part of sibling

rivalry that started with seeking their father/parent’s love and
approval. It is a simple plot, but we can see the different
aspects of Filipino culture and reality in those times that
applies even now.
We see Filipino’s respect for religion, reception of
guest/relatives, pag-mamano and leisure.
We see the reality of a relative living in the house ‘temporarily’
and eventually bringing their families with them.
We also see the reality of husband going to cabaret’s club and
domestic violence, which was more prevalent and unregulated
before.
Then, we also see the two actresses different acting styles.
Emilia played by Charito Solis, showed her emotions more easily in
her expressions and actions. We can easily relate to what she
feels in her situation. On the other hand, Pura played by Lolita
Rodriguez, is more subtle in her acting. We don’t easily see her
emotions in her expressions and actions. But we can still feel her
feelings by looking into her eyes and focusing on the tone of her
voice.

Ultimately, for me, the movie showed a realistic story about

sibling relationship, familial love, how love can be good by
showing forgiveness to self and others, and how love can be
twisted by greed and selfishness.
