ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: Using This Guide 1-1
An LAS is any external transport system, such as the ADVIA® LabCell® system
or the rack handler, which is connected to an ADVIA 1800 Chemistry system. The
LAS chapter provides the connectivity and set up information for the
ADVIA 1800 systems with an LAS system.
Intended Use
This system is intended for professional use in a laboratory environment only.
Tests performed using this system are intended for in vitro diagnostic use. As with
all diagnostic tests, a definitive clinical diagnosis should not be based on the
results of a single test, but should only be made by the physician after all clinical
and laboratory findings have been evaluated.

Conventions
The ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide uses the following text
and symbol conventions:
Convention Description
BIOHAZARD Biohazard statements alert you to potentially
biohazardous conditions.
LASER WARNING: Laser Warning statements alert you to the risk of
exposure to lasers.
WARNING: Warning statements alert you to conditions that
may cause personal injury.
CAUTION: Caution statements alert you to conditions that may
cause product damage or loss of data. On the
system, this symbol indicates that you should refer
to the operator’s guide for more information.
NOTE: Note statements alert you to important information
that requires your attention.
Bold Bold type indicates commands on the user
interface, keys, or the exact text that an operator
needs to type.
For example, if the word save appears as Save, it
refers to the selecting the Save button on the user
interface.
Another example is typing a specific entry into a
text box. If the word welcome appears as welcome,
it means that you should type that word into the
specified field.
Italic Italic type refers to the title of a document or a
section title in this operator’s guide. For example,
LIS Connectivity refers to Section 2 of this interface
guide.

LIS Enhancements
To use these options, the LIS must first be modified. Contact your LIS administrator for
the required modifications.
• A 10-digit QC lot number instead of a 6-digit lot number in the Comment2 field.
• The STT position information can be optionally sent as part of the “R” (result)
message. Both Sample ID (SID) and tray position are sent.
• The rack number and the rack position number fields of the “R” message are now
enabled. Rack and rack position data can be sent in the rack position field instead of
the Comment2 field.
• The patient results can be sent to the LIS as soon as they are complete. For example,
ISE results are reported when complete rather than at 10 minutes. Multiple messages
are sent to the LIS for one SID with results that are ready at different times.
• All tests listed on a workorder can be sent to the LIS even if only one test is run and
calculated. If no result is calculated, the result field is left blank.
• The patient age in weeks, months and days instead of only in years. This information
is used in the “O” (order) message as well as the “R” message. This enhancement is
not currently supported by the ADVIA CentralLink software.

An optional TCP/IP-based interface offers enhanced functionality and improved
workflow with your LAS. The enhancements include the following:
• a new hardware interface using TCP/IP
• resetting the LAS queue after a system error occurs
• improved communication between the system and the LAS
The following new messages have been added to improve communication and
workflow between the system and the LAS, including:
• sample status is sent to the LAS after completion of aspiration of the last test
for a sample to improve sample routing for workorder completion
• requests for samples that need rerun or reflex (if configured)
• system status messages indicate when warnings or errors occur on the
instrument
• reagent status is sent to the LAS to improve sample routing and load
balancing when multiple ADVIA 1800 Chemistry systems are connected to
the automation system
• enhanced skip tube logic without taking the system offline
• manual STAT sample notifications to the LAS

2 LIS Connectivity
This section describes the communications between the ADVIA 1800 Chemistry
system and a host computer.
The ADVIA Chemistry system and a host computer communicate in one of these
ways:
• The ADVIA Chemistry system requests a specific workorder or a batch of
workorders from the host computer.
• The host computer sends the workorders (test selections) in reply to these
requests.
• The ADVIA Chemistry system sends the sample results for patient and
control samples in real time, or in batch when initiated by the operator.
The ADVIA Chemistry system also can communicate with external samplers such
as the rack handler and laboratory automation systems (ADVIA LabCell System).
For information about these types of communications, refer to Section 3, LAS
System.

You can also select the Qual check box for qualitative results.
b. Verify that each number entered in each Code field matches the test
numbers entered in the host computer. The Code field can have up to 3
alphanumeric characters.
NOTE: If you enter a number in the Code field, insert spaces to the left of the
number to right justify the number in the field. If “b” is a blank, entering “b10”
will be read as a ten whereas entering “10b” will be read as a hundred. Refer to
Figure 2-4.
Incorrect Correct
LIS Name information is sent automatically from the instrument to LIS at the time
of a new start or initialization. Any time the testmap changes, this information is
resent to LIS and to LAS. If an LIS test name is not defined, the test is excluded
from the Test Map.
If any tests, including slave tests such as ratio tests and serum indices, are added
or deleted on the Test Select screen or the Active Test List window, the Test Map
response message is sent to the LAS.

The communication control codes are sent independently. (They are not enclosed by STX
and ETX codes.)
Feature Description
Checksum Test No, Yes
The Checksum test, which is enabled or disabled using the Online Settings window,
checks the quality of the message. The sum of the characters, after STX, up to and
including ETX or ETB, using modulo 256, is read hexadecimally and expressed as a
2-digit ASCII character. If checksum is No, a space code (20H) transmits and a check is
not performed on the system side.

C (67D)
D (68D)
E (69D)
+ ETX (03D)
387D → 183H (hexadecimal) → modulo 256 → 83H
The checksum value 83H is sent as:
CSH = ” (38H) and CSL = 3 (33H)
If both the sending and receiving device obtain the same checksum values, the
message is considered valid.
Communication Modes
The available modes of communication are determined by the hardware
configuration and by the specific options selected by the user.
Hardware Configuration
For communication purposes, the sampling and barcode device on your
ADVIA system determine the hardware configuration. This information is in the
System Specifications Settings window. Refer to Table 2-5 for more information.
(Underlined parameter values in the table are the default settings.)

System Customization
You can customize the system features listed in Table 2-6.
Table 2-6 System Customization
Barcode Selection
After configuring the barcode reader in the System Specifications Settings window, the
Start Conditions Settings determines if the barcode mode or the position mode identifies
samples on the onboard sampler. This option only is valid for the onboard sampler. The
barcode mode must be used for the external sampler.
You can have workorders for the current tray download automatically from the host
computer at the start of a run. Set the Online Settings parameter, Automatic Test Select, to
Yes.
Automatic test select is only applicable for patient samples aspirated from the onboard
sampler (STT).
When the Host toggle button is set to ON and a workorder is found, the system downloads
a workorder from the host. If a workorder is not found at the host, the system searches its
internal database. If a workorder is not found in the internal database, the sample is not
aspirated.
The host workorder contains information that tells the system how to manage the
workorder that was downloaded. The system can receive 4 different instructions as shown
in Table 2-7.
Table 2-7 System Instructions for Workorders

Data Output
In the Online Settings Window, you can verify that sample results are sent to the
host computer in real time:
• Automatic transfer: automatic test select (STT)
• Automatic transfer of interruption sample result (Rack Handler, LAS)
• Automatic transfer of pilot sample results (Controls)

In modes 1 and 7, prepare the loadlist using the host, and also to set the data
concerning the position number in the test selection instruction text.
In modes 2 and 8, you can draw up a loadlist using the ADVIA 1800 Chemistry
system as well as the host.
In mode 9, draw up a worksheet using the host, and also set the data concerning
the sample number in the test selection instruction text.
Sample Identification
The ADVIA Chemistry system can identify samples internally within its database,
during sampling, and during the transfer of data between the system and the host
computer, or an external sampler (rack handler or other LAS device). This
identification is made using a registration number, position number, sample
number, or sample information, the ADVIA 1800 Chemistry system identifies
samples.
073D0402-01 Rev. A
2-16 ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LIS Connectivity
Registration Number
The registration number is a sequence number between 1 and 10,000. This number is
employed in various workstation software windows, but it cannot be used to identify
samples in the communications between the ADVIA Chemistry system and the host
computer or an external sampler.
Position Number
When not using barcodes, the sample position number identifies patient samples aspirated
from the onboard sampler (STT). You also can use the position number as a data inquiry
key in various ADVIA workstation windows.
The STT position number format is:
01-01 TT-CC (TT = tray number, 1 to 97; CC = sample position, 1 to 84)
Online communications messages use position numbers. The numbers are left-justified,
not zero-suppressed, and terminated with an ASCII space character (20H). When using
position numbers, you must enter a sample number. Position numbers cannot be used to
identify samples aspirated from an external sampler, such as, the rack handler.
Sample Number
The sample number consists of up to 13 alphanumeric characters. When barcode labels are
used, the sample number becomes the barcode ID that identifies patient samples aspirated
from the onboard sampler (STT) or an external sampler. You can also use the sample
number as a data enquiry key in various ADVIA workstation windows.
A sample number is required for all workorders. This includes the position mode as
described in the previous paragraph. The ADVIA Chemistry system does not accept a
workorder that is missing a sample number.
Three sample number formats are available:
• General samples and interruption samples
You can use IDs consisting of up to 13 arbitrary characters.
In the Samp No. field, you can enter A-Z, 0-9, and special characters - (minus), +
(plus), period (.), $ (dollar), / (slash), % (percent), * (asterisk), and ; (semi-colon).
• STAT samples
A sample number from E01 to E84 (3 characters, fixed length) is automatically
assigned when the operator uses the STAT button on the Operation Panel to run a
STAT sample.
• Control samples
A sample number from PA001 to PZ200 (5 characters, fixed length) is automatically
assigned when a control sample is run.
Pxnnn (P = pilot [control], x = control letter assigned on QC Sample Definition window,
nnn = sequence number)

Sample Information
The sample information consists of comment 1, comment 2, sex, age, and so on.
Comments 1 and 2 each consist of a maximum of 16 arbitrary characters. You can
use them as patient numbers or patient names. You can use them as search keys
for making data inquiries. No check for duplicate entries exists.
In online communications messages, the sample data is treated as character data.

*Run all samples except general samples on the Sample Tray (onboard sampler).
General samples are run on the Sample Tray or an external sampler such as the rack
handler or an LAS, if available. When the run starts, the operator uses the Start Con-
ditions window to select which sampler is used for general samples. If, for any rea-
son, multiple samplers are selected, the analysis priority is to use the Sample Tray
first and then use the rack handler or LAS.
†The ADVIA Chemistry system manages a maximum of 10,000 general samples.
‡The host computer can create workorders (test registration) for general samples
and interruption samples.
§The position number for a sample on the Sample Tray (STT) consists of a tray

Currently, rack position numbers are not used for external samplers. Barcode la-
bels are required for the LAS devices including the rack handler. However, for ref-
erence purposes, the rack position number consists of a rack number and a sample
number. The rack number range is 0001 to 9999. The sample number range is 01 to
10.
**
Interruption samples are treated as general samples; however, these samples are
set at the CUP positions preset on the Sample Tray. These are analyzed first.
††
STAT samples are also set at predetermined positions on the Sample Tray, and are
analyzed preferentially. However, STAT est selection cannot be downloaded from
the host computer. STAT test selectivity is determined using the STAT Order Setup
window. The sample IDs E01 to E84 are reserved for STAT examples.
‡‡
Quality control samples are aspirated from positions on the Sample Tray (CTT).
The listed sample IDs are reserved for controls only. Controls cannot be requested
from the host computer. Instead, controls are usually requested from the Start Con-
ditions window.

Calibration samples are not handled online. Samples are orderable by LIS but not
sent to LIS.

Communication Protocols
The following communication protocols are available:
• Batch test registration
Communication starts after the operator uses the Host Request dialog box of
the Order Entry window to identify a group (batch) of workorders to
download from the host computer.
• Automatic test select (Host Query Mode)
When this feature is selected on the Online Select window, the host computer
downloads available workorders for STT patient samples upon request at the
start of the run.
073D0402-01 Rev. A
2-22 ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LIS Connectivity
The system-side timer value is the maximum time that the ADVIA Chemistry system
waits for a correct response from the host. Similarly, the host-side timer is the maximum
time allowed for the ADVIA Chemistry System to respond.
NOTE: The ADVIA Chemistry system can analyze individual tests at 3-second intervals.
If the sum of the system-side and host-side values exceeds the analysis time interval, the
system sampling time is increased resulting in decreased throughput. To avoid a
significant decrease in throughput, the host-side timer value should be less than that of the
analyzer, and the host computer should respond as quickly as possible.
If one sample has n requested tests, the sample analysis interval is
3.0 seconds x n. Consequently, the greater the value of n, the smaller the possibility of
decreased throughput during the communication waiting period.
The 3-second cycle time of the ADVIA Chemistry system imposes some restrictions on
the response time of the host computer program. If you want to continuously process
samples with a single photometric test requested on the workorder (single-test
registration), then the host computer response time must be less than 3.0 seconds. A
response time greater than 3.0 seconds reduces system throughput. The ADVIA Chemistry
system must wait for a Host response before sampling can continue.
In addition the ADVIA Chemistry system gives priority to the communication of
workorders (test registration) over result transfer (data communication). If the test
registration does not complete within 3.0 seconds, then data accumulates in the ADVIA
PC.
NOTE: This accumulation of data can cause performance problems on the system.
The need for a 3.0 second response is reduced if two or more photometric tests are
requested per workorder. The Host response time should be less than 3.0 seconds times the
number of tests requested (3.0 sec x n tests). ISE analysis (Ion-selective electrodes) by the
ADVIA Chemistry system requires 24 seconds.

• Required host response to communication initialization
The ADVIA Chemistry system initiates communications regardless of the
receiving condition of the host computer. The first line request (ENQ) of the
communication procedure is communicated to identify whether the host
computer can receive or not. Regardless of the host process conditions, the
host must receive the line request (ENQ) and reply for confirmation.
073D0402-01 Rev. A
2-24 ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LIS Connectivity
If the host computer is temporarily unable to respond, the ADVIA Chemistry system
retransmits a line request (ENQ) repeatedly up to the maximum number of times1, if a
negative response (NAK) is returned to the ADVIA Chemistry system line request
within an analyzer-side time-out. This retransmission can expand the host reception
starting time. Note that these processes reduce system performance.
• Host means of identifying samples
The position-mode method (TT-CUP No.) is available for patient samples aspirated
from the on-board sampler (STT). For example, a user who operates the
ADVIA Chemistry system in the barcode mode can request a suitable ID that is
different from the barcode ID during analysis, and process interruption samples using
the TT-CUP numbers. If the barcode sample is still being analyzed, the ADVIA
Chemistry system cannot be offline. In this case, the automatic test registration by
TT-CUP No. message transmits to the host. The ID that the host does not handle is
transmitted, and the host must respond as follows:
If the response is not transmitted, a time-out error occurs on the analyzer side.

Error Processing
Abnormal Text Format
If the system receives text that is abnormally formatted, the ADVIA Chemistry
system sends a NAK (or NACK) signal. The abnormal text-NAK cycle can repeat
up to 3 times.
For a summary of NAK or NACK messages, refer to A Note on NAK/NACK‚
page 3-1.
When the system receives text that is abnormally formatted again, the error-skip
counts (by the internal counter) increase, and the number of counts is compared to
the Set Error-sample Skip number. One of the following processes takes place
(refer to example below).
• If the number of error-skip counts is less than or equal to the number of text
error-skip counts:

Text Formats
The following text formats specify how workorder and result information are transmitted.
• batch-test query text
• test-query text
• test-selection instruction text (previous time No/previous time Yes)
• measurement-data text

Operational Notes
• If the ID is classified as a sample ID for a batch-test inquiry or a test inquiry,
set the sample ID in the test-selection instruction text, and leave the position
number unused (barcode operation or creation of worksheets using the
ADVIA Chemistry system).
• If the ID is classified as a Sample Tray ID or rack-number ID for a batch-test
inquiry or an test inquiry, set the position number to which the inquiry was
addressed, and also set the sample number to be controlled by the host in the
sample ID test (creation of worksheet using the host).
At the start of Sample Tray analysis, the sample classified as an interruption
sample (I) is analyzed first. The ADVIA Chemistry system also has a built-in
function to give priority to interruption samples for Sample Tray analysis.
When the samples are analyzed on the rack option or conveyor-belt system,
analysis begins sequentially as ordered regardless of that function. Any
interruption samples for these systems should be set on the Sample Tray.
• Registration data box
• 0 New Request
A new request is unconditionally registered as a new test selection. In case of
an already registered sample, its information is deleted and overwritten,
thereby erasing the analysis-result data. If you cannot judge whether it is a
new request or registered test on the host side, specify all of the tests in the
next box as 1 test addition, rerun.

Tests that are set to output qualitative measurement data are as follows:
• Each of the tests is fixed at 8 characters in length. Up to 6 characters are used for
analysis-condition settings and they are right-justified. The first 2 characters are used
for spaces. Setting 3 two-byte characters is possible, and in this case, SHIFT JIS codes
are output.
• The position-number box of the sample that was subjected to barcode analysis using a
sample ID is invalid.
If you select New: Version 1 in the Online Settings window, the system parameter, LIS
Result-Format-Control, enables you to choose the format of the Measurement Data Text
Comment 2 field. The settings are:
073D0402-01 Rev. A
ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LIS Connectivity 2-55
The lot number is alphanumeric. The date is independent of locale settings. The
year (yy) and month (mm) in the Full Lot Number Format is the control expiration
date. It indicates that the control expires on the last day of the month. (The 2-digit
year field considers the value 00 as the year 2000.)
The lot number transmission size is 10 characters. This is equivalent to the
maximum number of input characters available to the operator in the Ctrl/Cal Set
screen.
NOTE: If the system parameter is set to a value of 1, limited control lot number
information transmits, creating a potential safety hazard.
The 6-digit Lot is the default setting. It indicates the existing ADVIA Chemistry
software six-digit lot number transmission format.
The following table indicates the expected field transmission of Comment 2 field
of Measurement Data Text for Lot Number and Expiration Date information
extracted from the analyzer Ctrl/Cal Setup screen for the two defined formats.
The Comment 2 field is a maximum of 16-characters. The ^ character indicates
that the operator pressed the space-bar on the keyboard to create a space character
(20H). The ^ character in the LIS Transmission column below indicates a space
character in the transmission field.
A No-entry indicates that the operator did not input a value into the field.

Online Monitor
The ADVIA system Online Monitor screen includes a listing of the online data
transmissions between the analyzer and the LIS. Each transmission entry begins as a
separate line in the log. Each line of the log includes:
• A date and time stamp displays the time the message is sent or received by the
instrument (The format is the short date format: mmddyy hhmmss. The format can be
a 12-hour clock or 24-hour clock.)
• An S to indicate a transmission sent from the analyzer or an R to indicate a
transmission received by the analyzer.
The Online Monitor screen automatically updates with new LIS Transmission data during
Host On conditions.
Pressing the Refresh button refreshes the contents of the online monitor screen.
If the transmission data includes a space character (20H), it displays in the Online Monitor
screen as the ASCII character ^ (5E H).
Table 2-45 Display of Space Character Data
Online Monitor Data automatically saves to a file. Each time you open the software and
perform a New Start, a file is created reflecting the Online Monitor transmission data. It
begins at the time in which the previous New start was performed and ending at the time in
which the New Start was just executed. The file also sent to RTS in order to complete the
RTS requirement. The parameter, LIS: Keep Online Monitor File (days), can be 7 to 30
days. The default is 7 days.
A new folder is in the existing C:\A002 directory called Log\LIS. This folder contains up
to 7 files reflecting the 7 most recent Online Monitor transmission data files. There is not a
restriction on the size of each file and files are handled FIFO.
The filename format is sys#-MMDDYY-XXZZ.txt. MMDDYY indicates the current
system date; XX indicates a value, enabling the file name to be unique.

When an error condition occurs, a message posts in the alarm log and an event notification
sends to the LIS.
The error messages are listed in the message file called: SFYONLIN.msg. The behavior of
the system when each of these errors occurs can be customized by setting the appropriate
settings in the file sfyerr.txt. These files are located in the C:\A002\ETC folder. Once the
file sfyerr.txt has been located, it can be modified by the following procedure:
1. Create a backup of the file by copying it to a temporary folder and renaming it
sftyerr_bak.txt.
2. Open the file in Notepad or WordPad.
3. Find the error number causing the system to stop or that turns off the host.
4. Change the L that follows the error number to a 0 (zero) and remove the # symbol, to
avoid stopping the system.
5. Select File, then Save.
6. Close Notepad or WordPad.
7. Close Explorer, then shut down and restart the computer.
The Time-out: Automatic Test Selection field is a variable in calculating the total amount
of time allocated for execution of workorder query for a sample located on the onboard
sample tray. The field input range is 0.0–1800.0 seconds. If you attempt to input a value
outside the allowable range, the system prompts you to enter a value between 0.0 and
1800.0. After you move from this field, the input value is displays as a real number with at
least one integer digit, and one decimal digit.

ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LAS System 3-1
3 LAS System
The Laboratory Automation System (LAS) is any external transport system, such
as the ADVIA LabCell system or the rack handler, which is connected to an
ADVIA 1800 Chemistry system. In this documentation, external transport
systems will be referred to using the generic term LAS.
The chemistry system must meet the following to operate with an LAS:
• The system is configured to run in LAS mode (Refer to Setting Up the
Chemistry System for LAS Operation‚ page 3-6). In the LAS mode, the system
expects the LAS to supply samples.
• You can interrupt an LAS run for interrupt analysis, re-analysis, calibration, or
quality control from the sample tube tray/control tube tray (STT/CTT). You
return to the LAS mode after the interrupt samples are processed.
• As with a normal run, you must enter in the system all relevant information
pertaining to an LAS run, including methods, workorders, container types,
and other settings. Refer to the Operator’s Guide for your analyzer for further
instructions.
The system must have the correct hardware and software components installed,
including the LAS signal interface box (PN 073-0344-02). The ADVIA 1800
Chemistry system uses either a serial/parallel connection or TCP/IP connection.
For more information on connecting the system using a serial connection, refer to
Serial Communication Interface Specifications‚ page 3-66. For more information
on connecting the system using a TCP/IP connection, refer to TCP/IP
Communication Interface Specifications‚ page 3-25.
A Note on NAK/NACK
The terms NAK and NACK both mean “negative ACK” and are used
interchangeably in this document. There are four parameters associated with this
message. The table below lists its use in different scenarios.

Real Test Select indicates samples that are introduced to the system via
Automation (track) system or URH. When Real Test Select is Yes, and
the system cannot find workorders locally, the system queries the host
computer for workorders. Whether or not the system queries the host
computer, it does not analyze samples that do not have workorders.
• Host Transfer Method: You can configure the system to transfer result data
automatically as it becomes available, or you can manually transfer data in
batch at the Review/Edit window.
• Sampling Source: The system aspirates a sample either from the sample tray
(STT/CTT) or from the aspiration position of the LAS. This depends on the
Sample delivery setting at the System Specifications Settings window.
• As shown in Table 3-2, not all host transfer methods are available for a given
sampling source.
• Sample Container Identifier: If the sampling source is the STT, the system
identifies samples by tray position number or by barcode, depending on
settings in the Order Entry or Start Conditions window. LAS samples are
always identified by a barcode.

CAUTION
Do not use the 1 mL cups on the LAS. The cups can shift
during transfer to the aspiration position and possibly
damage the DPP.
After you start the LAS, run the samples as described in this procedure:
1. At the Operation Panel, select Start.
NOTE: The General smp. Analyze option is only available if the System
Specifications Settings window is set correctly.
2. At the Start Conditions window, select General smp. Analyze.
3. Select Start.
If needed, you can run calibrators, controls, and patient samples from the STT
at the same time.
After you select Start, the operating mode changes to START.
Cuvette washes are run and the reagent probes aspirate reagent. The operating
mode changes from START to HOLD.
If the system cannot communicate with the LAS, the operating mode returns
to READY. Correct the problem and restart the run. Any error messages
display in the ALARM message box in the Operation Panel.
4. Place the sample tubes in the appropriate position in the LAS.
Ensure each tube has its barcode label positioned so that the barcode reader
can read it.
The chemistry system performs the following actions:
• The barcode reader reads the labels on each sample, then sends the
barcode numbers to the system. The system locates the workorder
associated with the barcode.
073D0402-01 Rev. A
ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LAS System 3-22
• The system waits for the sample to arrive from the LAS. If a sample with
a barcode number received by the system does not arrive within time
settings specified in the System Parameter Settings window (see
parameter #123 on Page 3-15), the system goes into WATCH mode.
• After the LAS transports the sample to the aspiration position, the DPP
aspirates the sample. The diluted sample is dispensed into the DTT for
analysis. The barcode number displays in the Operation Panel.
• The liquid level sensor in the DPP uses the sample container settings
selected for this run to instruct the DPP how far into the container it must
go to aspirate the sample.
• If any abnormalities occur while an LAS sample is processing, the run
stops and the operating mode changes to STOP. Rerun the sample being
analyzed (as an interrupt sample), then restart the run (after the operating
mode returns to READY) to reconnect to the LAS and resume sampling.
Any error messages display in the ALARM message box in the Operation
Panel.
5. When all LAS samples are processed, at the Operation Panel, select Stop.
The operating mode changes to STOP, and then to READY.

TCP/IP Communications
The TCP/IP (socket) communications uses 100BASE-T. The TCP/IP ports for the
LAS and Instrument communications are:
LAS to ADVIA system 2 Ports (Transmit and Receive)
LAS to PC 1 Port (Full Duplex Transmit and Receive)
(instrument workstation)
ADVIA to PC 3 Ports (1 Transmit and 2 Receive)
The system automatically recovers lost TCP/IP connections and enables the
external interface. If the connection to the LAS is lost, the system waits for Reset
Queue command to clear the queue of any pending samples.
LAS must monitor all three socket connections. If any one of them disconnect, the
connections on all sockets must be closed and a reconnect and handshake
attempted.
If all three socket connections are lost, a safety error is recorded in the Alarm Log.
The message indicates an auto recovery in process. At the end of the recovery
process, another safety error is logged with a message describing the success or
failure of the recovery attempt.
Each ADVIA system has a fixed (static) IP address. This IP address is assigned by
Siemens. You do not need to configure software on the hub (or switch). The IP
addresses are:
LAS 128.1.91.25
Workstation PC 128.1.91.26 assigned to port 20003
Line 1/2 128.1.91.27 assigned to ports 20004 (send) and 20005

TCP/IP Messages
The Siemens Universal Router Analyzer Protocol (uRAP) protocol is the
communication link between sample tube transportation system and sample
analyzers. This protocol lays out a common message format, arrays of standard
messages, and the means to expand the basic set to meet specific needs. The
protocol can be implemented in part or entirety. For more information about the
uRAP protocol, contact your authorized Siemens support provider.
The following sections provide information about the specific messages used by
an ADVIA Chemistry system.
The communications between the LAS and the system are arranged in these
message type categories:
• Communication Setup Messages
• System Status Messages
• Instrument Inventory Messages
• Instrument Busyness Messages
• Event Notification Messages
• Emergency Recovery Messages
• Point in Space Sample Sharing Messages
• Sample Tube Sharing Messages
The general message format is header, message, and footer. Refer to Table 3-9 for
the format details.
A message acknowledgement is sent upon each message received. The header
includes a Return Sequence ID that matches the acknowledgement to the original
message.
If the check sum code is not correct, a negative acknowledgement (NAK) returns
to the requestor. If the requestor receives a NAK three times in a series, it is Reset.
(LAS ADVIA line and LAS-PC line separately count the Reset.)

ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LAS System 3-39
A keep alive message transmits from the LAS to the system to maintain an active
connection during periods of idleness and to prevent the circuit from timing out
and terminating the connection. After a signal is sent, if no reply is received the
link is assumed to be down. If LAS sends a keep alive message to the instrument,
the instrument returns an ACK to the LAS. (A header and footer are sent to verify.
Fields are not sent.)
The keep alive message does not interrupt the constant communication flow
between the instrument and the LAS. If you disable external sampling, the keep
alive message continues to be sent to the LAS system.
NOTE: This does not apply to “Point in Space Sample Sharing” messages, but
does apply to all other types of messages.
A keep alive signal is sent at predefined intervals. The time interval is set in the
LAS system settings in the LAS-KP Message Send Rate parameter. The send rate
can be 5 to 60 seconds. The system default is 10 seconds.
The keep alive messages sent from the LAS and from the instrument are recorded
in the LAS monitor.
You can track keep alive messages by using the LAS-KP Message Log parameter
in the LAS system settings. The default value is 0, which disables the tracking
capability. To track the keep alive message history, change the LAS-KP Message
Log parameter to 1.
In addition to the interval parameter, and the logging parameter, there is a third
keep alive parameter which turns keep alive messaging on or off. You must have a
manager or supervisor security level to modify any of these system settings.
Shutdown Message
Header Footer
This shutdown message is sent to the LAS when the software is shut down on the
workstation PC. (A header and footer are sent to verify. Fields are not sent.) This
shutdown message can be received from the LAS at any time.

ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LAS System 3-40
LAS should not stop adding tubes when LIS is offline in the system status
message.
The instrument software will send an event notification to tell LAS that LIS is
offline: this will allow a message to be displayed to users so they can respond
appropriately.
Therefore, Ready for Sampling is determined by:
General status = 01x01
This status is set based on one of the following being true:
Status Code = 01x01 - consumables ok
01x02 - consumables low (this usually means that tests
will run until consumables run out)
02x01 - LAS online (indicating that LAS is set up
correctly on the instrument)
04x01 - ready to sample external (meaning the user has
started the instrument for external sampling and
is ready to aspirate)
The LAS queries the instrument regarding status to accept or process a sample. A
header and footer are sent to verify. Fields are not sent.
NOTE: When establishing communication with the instrument, ensure that the
instrument is not performing any actions (e.g., barcode scanning, initializing,
transitioning from READY to START mode). It is recommended that the
instrument be in a WAIT or a READY state. See “System Status Response
Message” for explanation.

Test Map
A response message is sent at startup or upon request. If a change in the supported
test map occurs, a message is sent. If the new map sent from the instrument does
not match the map on the LAS, then the test map sent should overwrite the map on
the LAS. The test map is not automatically overwritten. Any LAS that interfaces
with the ADVIA Chemistry platform must update its status based on this message.
When any change is made on the instrument test selections (tests available to run),
a Test Map message will be sent followed by a Test Inventory status message
indicating the status of all available tests.
A header and footer are sent to verify (fields are not sent).

Test Inventory
Test Inventory allows the instrument to update LAS on the tests available to run
on a system; it can be sent unsolicited or in response to an LAS request. The Test
Inventory message includes a Test ID Count and a Test ID. The Test ID Count is
the number of the Test ID with the request message. The value of 0x0000 means a
request for all tests in the instrument. If all tests are requested (0x0000), Test ID
fields are not used.
When any change is made on the instrument test selections (tests available to run),
a Test Map message will be sent followed by a Test Inventory status message
indicating the status of all available tests.

Test ID Count The number of Test IDs within the request message. The
value of 0x0000 indicates that the request is for all tests in
the instrument.
Test ID • ASCII string
• alphanumerical value
• optional field, depending on Test ID count
• 3 bytes, with no space suppression and no zero
suppression
NOTE: Because there is no space- or zero-suppression, it is
important to designate where spaces and zeroes are in 2-digit
entries; otherwise a 2-digit entry may be recorded as a
3-digit value. If you enter “12,” the system will add a space
at the end and record the number as “12b.”
If information for a particular test is requested, the Test ID field is set to the test
identifier requested. Multiple information can be requested. The test identifier is
defined in the Test Map generated by the instrument.
The Test Inventory Response message is sent during a barcode scan, reagent
pause, change in threshold, and ready→start state transition (when start is
pressed), and after a consumable inventory response message. If changes occur to
the status of a test’s Active/Inactive status, the message is sent.

The instrument can send one or all tests in a message. At Startup, all tests are
reported. During Processing, only updates may be reported.
NOTE: The instrument generally sends full inventory, but in some special cases it
can send an incremental inventory. Since there is no way to distinguish from the
protocol whether a message is full or incremental, LAS must treat the 1st one after
handshake, and the first one after Start has been pressed, as full and all others as
incremental.
The exception cases are:
1) Anytime a testmap is received, the test inventory after receipt must be treated
as a “full” inventory message.
The Test Inventory status for ISE tests is indicated as enabled or disabled. All
other fields can be null for ISE tests.

Severity 1 The Severity levels are Green, Yellow, and
Red.
Green (01) indicates that the instrument s
ready to run a Sample.
Yellow (02) indicates that one or more of the
components of the test (R1 and R2) are below
the threshold. This means that: for Serum
indices, at least one of the tests configured as
the master is either yellow or red; for Ratios,
at least one of the master tests is yellow.
NOTE: For ISE test, Yellow means one of
the calibrations has a problem. See Table
3-10 for possible cases for ISE calibrations.
Red (03) indicates that a test cannot be run.
This means that: for Serum indices, all of the
master tests are red; for Ratios, at least one of
the tests is red.
This field is set to Red when:
• there are no valid matched pair for a test,
e.g., missing R1 or R2
• the test is not enabled on the Active Test
List screen
• the test is not enabled on the Test Select
screen
• consumables are empty
• the test cannot be run for any other
reason (e.g., hardware)
• the QC Status becomes Inactive
• the reagent quantity for either R1 or R2
is 0
• the test is not calibrated (has a C flag)
and cannot be run
NOTE: If a test is not calibrated, its status
will be “disabled” in the Test Inventory Status
message. However, if the tube shows up to be
processed, the tube will be processed and the
Sample Interaction Complete message will
show a status of “successful.” The final result
for the test will be flagged with a “C” flag
(calibration needed).

Test Count 2 The Test Count field reports the minimum
number of tests that can be run based on
quantity of the R1 and R2 volumes available.
If there are multiple lots of a test installed and
runnable (Green status), then the test count
returns the total test count of all lots.
ISE, Serum indices and Ratio tests have
either the maximum value of 65535 or 0.
Enabled 1 The Enabled field indicates if the instrument
is ready to run a test. The value 0x01
indicates the system is ready. The value 0x00
indicates the system in not ready. If the test is
not ready, an additional code is added to the
Response:
• 0x00 disabled
• 0x01 ready
NOTE: If a test is not calibrated, its status will be
“disabled” in the Test Inventory Status message. However, if
the tube shows up to be processed, the tube will be
processed and the Sample Interaction Complete message
will show a status of “successful.” The final result for the
test will be flagged with a “C” flag (calibration needed).
Response Code / 1 The value 0x00 indicates the system in not
Reason Code ready. If the test is not ready, an additional
code is added to the Response:
• 0x01 consumable missing/reagent
deselect/Active Test List OFF/Test
Select OFF
• 0x02 instrument failure
• 0x04 calibration error/ISE serum
calibration error/QC status
INACTIVE
• 0x08 ISE urine calibration error
NOTE:The status of ISE tests is communicated based on the
calibration status of ISE tests for Serum and Urine. For
example:
If ISE is calibrated for Serum but not for Urine, then the
reason code will be 0x08.
If ISE is calibrated for Urine but not for Serum, then the
reason code sent will be 0x04.

Event Notifications
The Event Notification is a bidirectional message that notifies the LAS and the
instrument of current events. It is dynamic in nature to provide usage flexibility. It
can be used with a declared structure at implementation of the system or it can
send a series of ASCII messages. Primarily, the Event Notification notification
communicates safety alarm codes that are Warning level or Fatal level. The
default event codes (for warning level uses) are in this file:
C:\A002\etc\warning.tbl
If you delete this file, all events are sent. This file can be modified to add
additional warnings.
If the Event Messages notification is disabled, no events are sent to LAS. The
input values are:
• 0: No values are sent
• 1: Warning and Fatal
• 2: Fatal only

Test Mode
When the system is in test mode, SW1 and SW2 (inside the LAS interface panel)
are normally set to OFF. When the switches are ON, they function as described
below:
Table 3-16 Switch Function in Test Mode
Switch Description
SW1 Test switch that generates the /HNREADY signal and turns the
HNREADY light on. This indicates a state of connection with the LAS.
SW2 Test switch that generates the /SMPREQ signal and turns the SMPREQ
light on. This indicates a state where an LAS sample has arrived at the
aspiration position.
Connectors
The connectors function as described below:

OPERATING
MODE WAIT INITIALIZE READY START HOLD STOP READY
1. When the LAS detects the system, it sends an /HNREADY signal to the
system, indicating that it is ready to send samples to the system.
This occurs after the system is powered up.
As long as the /HNREADY signal is on, the LAS is communicating with the
system and sampling can take place.
2. The system begins in WAIT mode.
As it is being initialized, it is in INITIALIZE mode.
3. The system sends a /BMINIT signal to the LAS, informing the LAS that
initialization is taking place (and that it cannot receive samples).
4. After initialization, the /BMINIT signal stops.
The /BMINIT signal is sent during every initialization, even if the system and
LAS are not communicating.
5. After it has been initialized, the system is in READY mode.
6. After washes and other startup tasks are completed, the system returns to
READY mode.
Analysis can now begin.
7. When an analysis is started (after about 90 seconds), the system sends a
/BMONL signal to the LAS indicating that it is ready to receive samples.
The /BMONL signal remains on (just like the /HNREADY signal), unless one
of the following conditions occurs:
• The system shuts down or the system becomes unable to analyze samples.
• A system error occurs (if this occurs, the system also sends a /BMTRBL
signal).
• The system is taken out of LAS mode.
073D0402-01 Rev. A
ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LAS System 3-73
At this time, the system also confirms that the /HNREADY signal is still on
(see Figure 3-17). If it is on, the next sample can be analyzed. If it is off (it can
go off for the same reasons as /BMONL signal), the analysis stops. The
system goes into STOP mode, and you must restart the run.

8. When the system is ready for the next sample, it requests the LAS to send the
next pre-read sample ID with a /BMREADY signal.
The /BMONL signal must still be on for this to happen.
If the system cannot receive any more pre-read sample ID numbers,
/BMREADY goes off. The LAS cannot send any more sample IDs until
/BMREADY goes back on (the system needs to process the existing sample
IDs for the signal to start again).

1. When the sample arrives at the aspiration position (the pre-read sample ID has
already arrived), the LAS verifies that the /BMONL signal is on, then sends
an /SMPREQ signal to the system.
The /BMONL signal must be on so the system can respond to /SMPREQ; by
detecting this signal, the system can aspirate the sample.
2. The system turns on /BMSMP to acknowledge the /SMPREQ sent by the
LAS, thereby informing the LAS that it is ready for sampling.
The /BMSMP signal stays on until sampling completes.
The system also turns on the /IDREQ signal to request the sampling Sample
ID of the sample now at the aspiration position.
The LAS turns off the /HNNEXT signal, indicating that what was previously
the next sample is now the current sample to be processed.
073D0402-01 Rev. A
ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LAS System 3-76
3. The LAS sends the sampling sample ID to the system; the system sends back
an acknowledgment (ACK) when it has confirmed the validity of the ID.
The system also turns off /IDREQ. (The LAS can send pre-read sample IDs to
the system when /IDREQ is off.)
If the ID does not arrive in five seconds, the system issues an LAS error,
thereby stopping communications with the LAS.
If the system sends a negative acknowledgment (NAK) in response to the ID,
the LAS attempts to send the ID up to two more times. If the system returns a
NAK a total of three times, the LAS stops sending the ID and judges that a
serial communications error has occurred.
If the system has no workorders for the sampling sample ID it has received, it
does not aspirate the sample.
4. The system begins sampling 2.05 seconds into the three-second sampling
cycle (time managed by the system).
5. After 2.5 seconds, the system verifies that /HNNEXT is on; if it is, the
sampling process for the next sample can begin.
The /HNNEXT verification takes place while sampling of the current sample
is taking place; the actual sampling process for the next sample does not begin
until the current sample is processed.
6. After sampling for the current sample has completed, the system turns off
/BMSMP.
7. After verifying that /BMSMP is off, the LAS begins to transport the next
sample to the aspiration position.
If /SMPREQ is still on when /BMSMP goes off, the system issues an LAS
error, thereby stopping communications with the LAS.
If the LAS detects /IDREQ signal after /BMSMP goes off, it judges that an
error has occurred in the system.
Error Communication
1. If the system detects an abnormality during sampling, it sends an error
message to the LAS.
See Error message (E message)‚ page 3-87. The LAS then acknowledges the
error message.
2. If the LAS does not send an acknowledgment (ACK) within three seconds,
the system attempts to resend the E message up to two more times.
If the LAS does not acknowledge the error message after three attempts by the
system, the system issues an LAS error and turns off the /BMREADY,
/BMONL, /BMSMP, and /IDREQ signals, thereby stopping communications
with the LAS.
073D0402-01 Rev. A
ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LAS System 3-77
3. If the system receives the sampling sample IDs in a different order than it
received the pre-read sampling IDs, it sends an E message (with error code
005) to the LAS, and turns off /BMONL (stops communication with the
LAS).
Figure 3-20 depicts the LAS signals used for error message communications.
073D0402-01 Rev. A
ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LAS System 3-78
6. If the /SMPREQ signal is sent for all samples, the /HNNEXT signal is always
on, except for the first and last samples of the run.
Since the LAS controls /SMPREQ by the current sample, the /HNNEXT
signal can be held (while on) to correspond to the sample that turned on
/SMPREQ.
7. When a sample arrives at the aspiration position, the LAS usually controls the
/HNNEXT signal.
After turning off /SMPREQ, /HNNEXT is kept for the next sample (see
Figure 3-27 on page 3-89).
8. The /BMSMP signal synchronizes a valid sample with the system. Because
/BMSMP is off during sample transport, an invalid sample can be transported
asynchronously.

Default Sample ID
When the LAS uses two barcode readers, the R message is sent after the second
barcode reader scans the sample. If the R message and the I message sent earlier
do not match, the LAS software assigns a default sampling sample ID to the R
message. This ID allows the system to continue operating. (If the default ID is not
created, the non-matching sample IDs cause the system to stop operation.)
In accordance with the three-second sampling cycle, the system aspirates a sample
with the default sampling sample ID, because it had previously received a valid
“I” message from the LAS. However, it does not analyze the sample, because the
“R” message contains the default ID added by the LAS. Neither results nor flags
are produced. The next sample is analyzed according to normal protocols.
When the “R” message is sent with the default ID, all other data types must be
correct and the normal parallel signal communications must be used.

The polynomial to make the bit code and the polynomial correspond one-to-one is
called the code polynomial.
Example:
3 2
1101 = X + X + 1 (MSB is made to correspond to the coefficient of
higher-order degree).
k–1 2 1
Message part: m ( x ) = m k – 1 X + … + m2 X + m1 X + m0
n–k–1 2 1
CRC part: r ( x ) = r n – k – 1 X + … + r2 X + r1 X + r0
1
It is equal to the left shift of one bit of the bit expression to multiple X to the code
polynomial. The code polynomial when the message part is shifted to the left of
the r bit and the n bit is assumed is as follows:
r
X m(x) =
n–k n–1 n–k+1 n–k
X m ( x ) = mk – 1 X + … + m1 X + m0 X
Example:
3 2
m ( x ) = X + X + 1 (1101)
3 6 5 3
X m(x) = X + X + X (1101000)
n–k
The expression in which X m ( x ) is divided by another polynomial g ( x ) is
shown below:
n–k
X m ( x ) = q ( x )g ( x ) + r ( x ) , where
q ( x ) is a quotient.
r ( x ) is the remainder.
n–k
Because X m ( x ) is n degrees, r ( x ) becomes below the n-k-1 degree.
n–k
The one that r ( x ) was added to X m ( x ) can be divided by g ( x ) . That is:
n–k
X m ( x ) + r ( x ) = q ( x )g ( x )

r ( x ) = 0X + 0X + 1. That is, r(x) = (001), which is used as the
transmission CRC code.
The whole transmission message is represented as follows:

V ( x ) = X m ( x ) + rx = X + X + X + 1 (1101001)
073D0402-01 Rev. A
ADVIA 1800 Chemistry System Interface Specification Guide: LAS System 3-93
The same g ( x ) must be used between the system and the LAS.
The system’s error detection varies, depending on the g ( x ) . The following are the
normal generating polynomials:
16 12 5
g( x) = X +X + X + 1 , or 10001000000100001(X.25 standard)
16 bits 16 15 2
g( x) = X +X + X + 1 , or 11000000000000101(CRC-16).
Used in this signal specification.
Because g ( x ) is the n-k degree of this polynomial, the highest order degree of the
generating polynomial equals the CRC bit length.
Example:
3
For g ( x ) = X + X + 1 : CRC is 3 bits.
16 12 5
For g ( x ) = X +X + X + 1 : CRC is 16 bits.

LASER WARNING
Never look directly at the laser beam or at its reflection from a shiny surface.
Looking directly at the laser beam or its reflection could cause damage to the
eyes. Only trained field service personnel should perform procedures related to
laser assemblies. Refer to Appendix A, Protecting Yourself from Barcode Scanner
Lasers, for more information.
The specifications for the laser optical assemblies in the ADVIA 1800 Chemistry
System ancillary reagent, primary reagent, and sample barcode scanners are
summarized in the following table:
Characteristic Specification
Maximum Power Output 1.0 mW
Wavelength 670 nm
Pulse Duration Continuous Wave (cw)
Units of Beam Divergence 0.7 mr
The locations of the reagent and sample barcode scanners and their associated
laser safety labels are shown below. The laser apertures for the sample and
ancillary reagent barcode scanners are directed into the system away from the
operator.
During normal operation, reflections from the sample barcode scanner laser beam
may be visible to persons in the immediate area, but no laser safety hazard is
associated with this exposure. The laser aperture for the primary reagent barcode
scanner is directed toward the barcode labels at the end of the reagent packs inside
the primary reagent compartment.
During normal operation, the barcode scanner does not scan the reagent packs
until the primary reagent compartment door is closed. When the primary reagent
compartment door is closed, no operator exposure to the laser exists.
