“The Role of Entrepreneurs in Economic Development”

“You, an entrepreneur? That’s just a fancy way of saying you’ll be unemployable.”

These are words I’ve heard coming into this course of Bachelor of Science, Major
in Entrepreneurship. And yet, entrepreneurship is so much more than what the common
person perceives it to be. While many – in fact all – individuals produce ideas, not
always do they come up with a great one; and when they do, not all choose to pursue it
– only entrepreneurs. What are they? Dreamers who have envisioned greatness, and
take steps to make it possible. An entrepreneur is a person who sees the potential in
the limited resources of their environment and chooses to take action, and actually
enforce change.

Many say that entrepreneurship is not a true career, and that it will likely amount
to nothing. But, if this were true, then nothing would mean the greatest inventions,
organizations, and conveniences that have built the economy of every nation. They
maximize the opportunities visible that benefit not only them, but the people they serve,
as well as their community. They create more jobs and enhance the skills of their
employees, thus not letting potential go to waste if they are efficient, while increasing
the quality of life of their members through training and supplying an income. The
ventures they undertake add wealth and convenience to their area making it more
developed and desirable to markets, especially when they work together in enhancing
their operations. This in addition, improves a society’s living standards and reputation.
Moreover, in their successes they contribute to the import and export of goods in a
country, adding to national revenue and connecting their nation to the rest of the world.

Overall, though many will argue and define many entrepreneurs’ character and
life by their failures, the bottom line is that in success they provide a product or service
that changes the lives of everyone around them. It is entrepreneurs who invoke the
biggest changes in the world; almost everything started from an idea born from a
problem to be solved or gap to be filled, and an entrepreneur built that idea until it
produced things that propelled a world into a new age; electricity, plumbing, technology,
the digital age, and more. Through their continuous innovation, intelligence, and
perseverance, they slowly transform their nation from developing to developed, creating
a community that would be proud of their country and its people.
