Proof by contraposition

Exercises

The method of Proof by contraposition is relying on the tautology ( p → q )  ( q → p ) .

This means that, instead of assuming that p is true and prove that q is true, we assume that q is true and
prove that p is true.

Exercises:

25. Prove that, if x is an integer such that 7 x + 9 is even, then x is odd.

26. Prove that, if x is an integer such that x 2 − 6 x + 5 is even, then x is odd.
27. Suppose x, y  . Prove that, if y 3 + yx 2  x3 + xy 2 , then y  x .
28. Prove that xy  5  x  5 and y  5 .
