Course: COM325 Introduction to Human Computer Interface

HUMAN COMPUTER INTERFACE

Human computer interface can be nest describe as the point of communication

between the human user and the computer. the flow of information between the

human and computer is defined as the loop of interaction. The loop of interaction

has several aspects to it including: Task environment, machine environment, areas

of the interface, input flow, output and field back.

Human Computer interaction is a discipline concerned with design, evaluation and

implementation of interactive computing systems, for human use and with the

study of major phenomena surrounding them.

Human computer interaction arose as a field from intentioned roots in computer

graphics, operating system, human factors, ergonomics, industrial engineering,

cognitive psychology and the system part of computer science.

GOALS IN HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION (HCL)

The goals of human computer interaction are to produce useable and safe system,

as well as functional system, in order to produce computer system with good

usability, developer must attempt to the following;

1. Understand the factors that determines how people use technology

2. Develop tools and techniques to enable building suitable system.

3. Achieve efficient, effective and safe interaction

4. Put people first.

FUTURE CHARACTERISTICS OF HCI

1. Ubiquitous communication

Computer will communication through high speed local network normally over

wide-area networks are other technologies. Data and computation services will

be portably accessible from many if not most location to which a user travels.

2. High Functionality system:

System will have large number of functions associated with them. There will

be so many system that most users, technical or non-technical, will not have

time to learn that in the traditional way.

3. Mass availability of computer graphics

Computer graphics capabilities such as image processing, graphics

transformations, rendering, and interactive animation will become wide

spread as inexpensive chips become available for inclusion in general

workstation.
4. Mixed media

System will handle images, voice, sound video text, formatted data. These

will be exchangeable over communication link among users. The separate

worlds of consumer electronic and computer will partially merge. Computer

and print world will continue to cross assimilate each over.

5. High brand wide interaction

The rate at which human and machine interact will increase substantially due

to the changes in speed computer graphic, new media, and new input/output

devices. This will read to some qualitatively directed interfaces, such as

virtual reality or computational video.

THE VARIOUS LOOP OF INTERACTION

Task environment: the conditions and goals are set upon the users.

1. Machine environment: this is the environment where the computer is

connected to e.g laptop in a college student’s dorm-room

2. Areas of interface: in this area we have non-overlapping areas and

overlapping area. The non-overlapping area involve the process of human

and computer not pertaining to their interaction while the overlapping area

only concern themselves with the processes pertaining to their interaction

3. Input flow: the flow of information that begins in the task environment,

when the user has some task that require using their computer

4. Output: this is the flow of information that originates in the machine

environment.

5. Feedback: loops through the interface that evaluate, moderate and confirm

process as they pass from the human through the interface to the computer

and back.

THE ELEMENT OF COMPUTER AND BACK.

The element of computer are:

1. Input device

2. Output device

3. Memory

4. Processing

1. Input device: this is for interactive use that allowing for text entry; drawing

and selection from the screen.

Input device we have the following;

a. Text entry: these are traditional keyboard, phontext entry, speech and

handwriting.

b. Pointing: principally the mouse, touch, pad, stylus and others

c. 3D interaction devices

2. Output device: this device is also for interaction use, where different type of

screen mostly using some firm of bitmap display

b) Large display and situated display for shared and public use

c) Digital paper may e useable in the near future

3. Memory: memory which is part of element of a computer we have the

following

a) Short time memory which is the RAM

b) Long-Time memory example magnetic and optical disk

c) Capacity limitation related to video storage

4. Processing

a) The effect when system run two slow or two fast the myth of the infinitely

fast machine

b) Limitations on processing speed

c) Networks and their impact on system performance

HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION COGNITIVE SCIENCE

Cognitive science is generally acquisition and use of knowledge by an

information processing system. All the fields that are involved in cognitive science
share an interest in the mind. The five primary fields include: Psychology,

linguistics, computer science, neuro science and philosophy contention itself can

be define as a process of knowing. It includes attention, perception, memory,

reasoning, judgment, imaging, thinking, and speech.

HUMAN INFORMATION PROCESSING (HIP)

Human processing information: allows us to split information down into steps

which can be easily read and understand by the human brain. It allows people to

store, retrieve and use information will ease.

There are four steps to how information is collected and used are

1. Absorb he information

2. Analysis the information

3. Use the information

4. Is something with the information

Human information processing works like a computer in which includes hardware

and software. At first, the brain will first input the data as hardware, which will

then be processes using software and then stores the information in either the STM

(Short Term Memory) or LTM (Long Time Memory).
