For instance, let us examine the formal definition of a limit:

Clearly, we can see that as x approaches a, then the output of function f(x) tends to limit L.

The professor made a cheeky mini-story, using this definition:

Imagine a boy is interested in a girl.

He intends to woo her, and decides he will do so by purchasing x flowers for her. If he purchases enough
flowers (function f), the girl will fall in love with him (L).

Let’s say the ideal number of flowers he should purchase is a.

If he purchases one flower, the difference between x and a (i.e. |x-a|) is very large. He must therefore buy
more flowers, so that x -> a.

From the definition, we see that the more flowers he purchases, the closer he is to getting the girl to fall for
him.*

So does he get the girl?

Well, since the f(x) approaches L, but never truly reaches L, you can guess for yourself! ;-)

Applying the same concept to goal-making; if i study x->a hours, then the amount of information I retain is
f(x)->L, where L could perhaps be all the possible course material.

My point is this: Mathematics is perhaps best described as philosophy, using numbers. We can find abstract
models for everyday phenomena using mathematical concepts, and that’s where maths is applied - it’s up to
