SIR RR IRR TIER ITT IER,
Instructions for use.
BREAKER RARER EERE EEE
DESCRIPTION:
The instrument is designed to measure thermal resistivities by
the ‘transient needle ' method as developed by E.R.A. The user is
referred to the E.R.A. Technical Report F/T 181 for the theory of
the method.
USE
Connect the Probe plug to the socket on the Test Set pushing down
firmly to operate the safety switch. Set the Temperature Range
Switch to the range required - normally the 'N' position.
Connect a well charged 12V Lead Acid Battery to the terminals
provided observing the correct polarity.
Select a suitable range for the 'g’ factor. The 'g' factor range
chosen should be such as to reach a maximum temperature of about
60°C or that of the expected maximum cable sheath temperature
during the test.
Prepare the test point in the ground by removing the top soil and
open the ground to a depth approximately 300mm less than the
proposed depth of cable. A steel rod of diameter slightly less than
the Probe (Tool 203) should be driven in to the necessary depth
and withdrawn, The Probe should then be inserted in this hole.
Approx 10 minutes should be allowed for the Probe to stabilize to
the temperature of the surrounding soil indicated by a constant
reading on the temperature meter of the Test Set.
The heater current should then be switched on and the pointer of
the right hand meter adjusted to the red line by means of the knob
provided. The pointer must be maintained accurately at this
position during the whole test.
If the 12V battery is not well charged it may not be possible to
obtain the red line setting on the '7.5g' range
The time and temperature readings should be observed over the next
15 to 20 minutes. The Temperature Range Switch may be changed
during the test if required.
Temperature readings are obtained by pressing the white button
A curve is then plotted using a linear temperature scale and a
Jogarithmic time scale. The curve of the plot becomes linear after
an initial period. From this linear portion the temperature rise
(delta theta) over one decade of the logarithmic scale in seconds
is deduced.
The Thermal Resistivity = delta theta x 'g' factor in ‘C cmW.

NOTES:
Current must not be applied to the Probe heater unless it is
immersed in a good heat conducting medium, otherwise a high temp
rise may occur and damage result
A preset potentiometer is available beneath the protective cap on
the front panel for setting the temperature reading on the meter
to the temperature of the probe. A thermometer should be placed
close to the bottom end of the probe in a draught-free position
and after a stabilising time of say 10 minutes the adjustment made.
This should only need attention when using a different probe
The temperature meter is operated by a small amplifier which is
energised by two 9V batteries Type PP3 fitted inside the case
The amplifier is compensated for voltage variations and the
batteries should have a long life
These batteries may be checked by pushing the small Batt Test
