INSTRUCTIONS:

This paper consists of Three (3) questions extracted from the DECEMBER 2010
Exam.
In your assigned groups of three, please answer in point form all 3 questions.

Each question is worth 25 marks

In cases where no theorist or researcher is mentioned by name in this paper, you should make
reference to the work of theorists and researchers whenever possible and appropriate in your
answers.

Credit will be given for any reference to theory or research when it is accurate, concise and
useful to your discussion.

Question 1

The selection and management of instructional material/resources are important issues


in the achievement of instructional objectives.

(a) State the benefits and drawbacks of using instructional material in the classroom learning
environment. Benefits:
 Material is tailored to fit the lesson objectives
 Stimulate imagination
 Promote retention and memory
 Save teaching time thus increasing contact time with students
 It aroused students interest
 Learning process is more interactive
 Caters to different learning styles
 Gives an accurate description of the concept

Disadvantages:
 Initial cost may high
 Material may contain too much information and thus confusing the
learner
 The materials may become distracting rather than educating (they
can be source of distraction)

 They must be carefully made and can thus be time consuming


 Teachers may not be efficient in using the amterials for e.g
projector, laptop

(b) Identify and justify three (3) criteria for choosing instructional materials for use in the
Business Studies classroom.
 Cost – Teacher must decide if the materials should be created are
bought according to the budget allocation.
 Appropriate – Is the material appropriate for the objectives of the
lesson
 Must be directly related to the concept taught
 Must correspond to instructional method being used
 Must be within the scope of the student
 Must cater for differenciated learning
 Space – the instructional materials must be of appropriate size to
adequately fit the space it is allocated for since the classroom have
limited space.

(c) Choose a Business Studies lesson with an age group of your choice. Identify at least two
(2) learning aids you may use, and say how they would assist you in achieving your
stated outcomes. (Outline the lesson plan)

Question 2

(a) Compare and contrast Role Playing and Problem Based Learning as teaching
strategies.
