“BEOWULF”

Pre-Viewing. –
1. What qualities should a hero possess?
The greatest quality of a hero is to be fair and seek justice, to be strong in order to help those who
need it most.
Viewing questions

1. Describe each one of the following characters?


a. Hrothgar. –
He’s one of the main characters in the film, the king of the dwarves and the most important
ally of the Vardens, he’s the adoptive father of Orik, in Eldest he’s killed by Murtagh with a
spell that killed him immediately.
b. Grendel. –
Grendel invades Herot, the land of the Danes, making it uninhabitable since he devoured
humans without anyone opposing him.
c. Grendel’s mother. –
His mother warns Grendel of attacking humans and possibly inviting retribution, but she’s
relieved to learn that Grendel did not attack Hrothgar.
d. Unferth. –
He’s the king's advisor, he challenges the credibility of Beowulf's epic heroism and to
convince him he tells a long story about how he managed to kill several sea serpents during
a swimming competition in the ocean.
e. Wiglaf. –
He was the son of Weohstan, a warrior from Svealand, of the Wægmunding family clan, who
had entered the service of Beowulf, king of the Geats.

2. According to what you watched,


a. Describe Herot, why was it built? What happened within its walls? How and by whom was it
destroyed?
It was built to be a place where the soldiers and the king could celebrate after a victory.
Then, in the middle of a celebration, it was destroyed by Gretel, who was angry because of
all the noise. He came to stop the whole celebration, killing many soldiers and almost the
king, but he failed.

b. Why does Grendel attack Herot?
Because Gretel hates all noise due to her ear problem, all noise hurts her so she decided to
destroy that place.

c. Who is Wiglaf? What did he do at the end?


He was Beowulf's right hand, he was always by his side, fighting together in all the wars, he
was by his side even when Beowulf died, and then he took the crown to become the new
king.
d. Who is Unferth, and why is he so hostile to Beowulf? Why is he allowed to speak that way?
Basically, he doesn't trust Beowulf, thinking he was lying about every victory, about monsters
and all. He was jealous of the new hero

Post Viewing Questions.-

1. Is there any value included in the story? Which one? Explain


They both lied, King Hrothgar and King Beowulf, the former cheated on his wife with the monster,
who gave birth to Gretel the monster, the same thing happened with Beowulf, doing the same for
being King, at the end of the movie we can see Wilgraf looking at the monster too, making us
wonder if he was going to repeat that mistake.
